Judging for Miss United States Begins Today in Miss Universe Fete LONG BEACH, Calif., (UP) — Attention in the Miss Universe pageant shifted from foreign to domestic beauties today when judging began in the Miss United States contest. Winner of the miss United States title will be decided Wednesday and she will participate in preliminary judging which starts Thursday for the honor of the most beautiful girl in the world. Following a morning rehearsal session, the 75 Miss Universe entries visited Universal-International Studios where they met several motion picture stars. A crowd estimated at more than 500,000 lined a 15-block parade route yesterday to get a look at the entries. The parade lasted nearly two hours. Leading the procession of colorful floats was Miriam Stevenson, HILGENFELD MORTUARY Faithful. Courteous. Service. 120 E. Broadway. Anaheim PHONE KE 5-4105 Winnsboro, S.C., last year's winner. Only one of the bathing suit-clad girls appeared on the verge of fainting from the humid 84-degree heat. Sirkku Talja, Miss Finland, finally asked that her float be stopped temporarily. She wiped her face with a sweater and then continued in the parade. Some of the girls, however, were reddened by the bright sunshine. Commented one of the foreign entries: "How I know why you call California sun-kissed." In addition to the girls there were 15 marching bands and novelty floats. But the spectators were busy using cameras in an all-out picture onslaught against the shapely beauty contestants. Judging from the response of the record-size crowds, blonde, curvy Carolann Connor, Miss Georgia, will be one of the favorites. She quickly caught the favor of the crowds with her ready smile. Other who appeared to be crowd favorites included Jean Dernago, Miss Massachusetts; Yolanda Mayen, Miss Mexico; Barbara Gurley, Miss Tennessee; and Keiko Takasashi, Miss Japan. Doctors said the mother, Mrs. Edward Schwartz of Dallas, still was critically ill. But they said she showed an immediate improvement as soon as the baby was delivered Sunday, a month early. Doctors said the baby was "very healthy." Nurses said the baby is "stout-lunged," and "howled for a bottle" Sundy not too many hours after his birth. The delivery of the baby was made by a staff of experts from the University of Texas' Southwestern Medical School here. A psychiatrist performed the hypnosis for the delivery. "Now we have four sons," Mrs. Schwartz beamed, as she spoke her first words after the delivery. Later she told her husband, a jewelry salesman, that it was the most painless childbirth of the four she had known. Doctors said that "as far as we know" Mrs. Schwartz was the first polio patient ever to deliver a baby under hypnosis. Mrs. Schwartz was eight months pregnant when she was stricken with paralytic spinal polio last Tuesday. Since then, she has been in critical condition and had much difficulty in breathing. Doctors said pressure of the unborn child against her chest area made breathing almost impossible. They induced her labor with drugs and delivered the baby with instruments. An immediate improvement in her breathing was noted after the birth, doctors said. The Russians, accompanied by three Soviet newsmen, got their month-long tour of the nation’s breadbasket underway with a visit to the 160-acre farm of Richard L. Alleman, a 25-year-old Army veteran, near Slater, Iowa, north of here. Their main purpose was to learn how America builds up huge food surpluses while Soviet production lags. And Alleman said he and his family would be happy to answer all the questions they might ask. He said he felt “quite honored that the delegation of Soviet experts picked his farm to visit. Alleman, who served with the Army in Alaska; his wife, Verda, 23, and their two children, Bruce, 3, and Sherry, 1, wore their every-day clothes–for the Russians’ visit. The delegation got right down to business today following an enthusiastic welcome by Iowa residents and officials upon their arrival Sunday night. They were to return from the Alleman farm at about 8 p.m. EDT; attend a luncheon addressed by Profs. Herbert Howell and College; then a news conference, and finally wind up the day with a dinner sponsored by the agriculture committee of the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce. Sunday night’s cordial welcome was in direct contrast to the booing given Soviet Foreign Minister V. M. Molotov when he passed through the Midwest recently on the way to the tenth anniversary celebration of the United Nations in San Francisco. A crowd estimated at 2,700 persons waved and applauded the Russians as they arrived here by plane in ill-fitting suits but wearing broad smiles. Why Suffer?
