PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE Angels—Oaks to Duel In Twin Bill Tonight LOS ANGELES UP—The Los Angeles Angels and Oakland, engaged in a duel for fifth place in the Pacific Coast League, clash at Wrigley Field tonight in a doubleheader that launches a six-game series. They play another double-header tomorrow night. The Los Angeles club, which has been playing good ball despite a recent wave of virus, will pitch Jim Brosnan (8-6) and lefty Joe Hatten (5-4) against Chris Van Cuyk (2-4) and Karl Drews (6-9) tonight. In addition to the virus hahdi-cap, Buzz Clarkson is temporarily out of action with a leg injury suffered on the road and Ed Wincenlak is expected to be out another week after having six stitches in his hand. Last night's Pacific Coast League games apparently prove that a good old pitcher—given proper rest, and care—can beat a good young pitcher on any given night—say July 11, 1953. The veterans Red Adams (7-4) of Portland and Earl Harrist (3-6) of Sacramento quieted the bats of the front running San Diego Padres and second-place Seattle Rainiers last night with hardly a bad scare. Adams, 34 years young, faced his junior Lloyd Dickey, 25, and came out on top by a 6-1 count over San Diego. Harrist, 35, with six days rest bested 23-year-old Johnny Oldham 5-2 in Sacramento and brought the Solons out of the loop cellar after 38 long days. Recreation Dept. Gary Polstra collected 12 points for the Rec. The La Habra team now has a 4-2 record. Don Sears scored with eight seconds left in an overtime from 15 feet out to keep the Lakers of Tustin in a first-place tie in the 'B' league. It was an uphill battle all the way, as the Lakers started slowly. The Orange Lancers missed opportunities to win the game from the free-throw line. Bfea Rec., managed to hold onto first place when Adrian Lcdbetter and Don McConnell each got 22 points to score a 56-41 win over the Junior Power Glides of Laguna Beach. One of the reasons why long distance calls cost so little these days, is this: Telephone people have a way of putting a number of calls—up to sixteen, in fact—over a single pair of wires at the same time. (Large cables can carry hundreds of calls simultaneously.) And each voice is distinct and separate when heard at the other end. In this way, one pair of wires does the work of many. The name for this is the "Carrier System". And you can see how important it is: For, without it, hundreds of thousands of miles of extra telephone lines would be needed. Savings like this are a real help as we work to hold down the cost of your telephone service. Pacific Telephone. It is a matter of municipal pride that Milwaukee will have them hanging from the rafters as a sign that the city has come of major league age. (Even if its ball club hasn’t, as of the moment.) The surest bet of the day is that Willie Mays will at some point during the game lose his hat while running for a flying ball. If he doesn’t, it’s a real upset. Musial Rides Bench When the umpire hoilers “play ball” you can wager safely that Stan Musial will feel silly sitting on the bench. (Do you know a man more deserving of All-Star status?) One of the day’s most spectacular catches will be a one-handed, bare-handed, over-the-head grab by a kid in the stands. (Everybody else around him will be waving at the TV camera.) Ted Williams will hit a home run. (He usually does, and why should this be any exceptions?) A doctor in the house will receive an emergency summons over the public address system just as the winning run reaches third base. (The patient’s dire question will be: “Did you say two of the white pills and one of the red, er two of the red and one of the white pills?”) One of the players will be racked up and handicap his team for the rest of the pennant race. (Dizzy Dean will tell you that you can get hurt in this one, against a power-packed field, much worse than you can in an ordinary ball game.) One gent trying to duck a foul ball will catch it squarely on the eye. Trabert Sets Out for National Clay Singles ATLANTA (UP) — Top-seeded Tony Trabert set out after his second National Clay Courts singles title today against unheralded Willis Irvin of Augusta, Ga. It was the first appearance for the Cincinnati star who swept victory in the Wimbledon tournament and who is ranked No. 2 in the nation. He was expected to have little trouble with Irvin. Trabert last won the Clay Courts championship in 1951. He lost out in the finals last year to Bernard (Tut) Bartzen of San Angelo, Tex. who was seeded fourth for this Puleo Offered New Bout With Costa NEW ORK (UP) — Anthony (Sonny) Puleo, young Brooklyn lightweight who won a substitute television fight at St. Nicholas Arena Monday night, was offered another bout there today. Puleo Offered New Bout With Costa NEW ORK (UP) — Anthony (Sonny) Puleo, young Brooklyn lightweight who won a substitute television fight at St. Nicholas Arena Monday night, was offered another bout there today with featherweight contender Carmelo Costa. Promoter Tex Sullivan said, "I'd like to match Puleo and Costa next month if I can." Smart direction from his corner helped 23-year-old Sonny win a unanimous 10-round decision over rough Libby Manzo of Elmhurst, N. Y., Monday night. Manzo's head long aggressiveness won the first two rounds. Then Sonny's handlers told him to straighten up Libby with a "lifting" attack of upper-cuts and hooks to the head. He followed directions admirably. Puleo, in his 15th professional fight, weighed 136¼ pounds; Manzo, 134 for his 27th bout. One of the players will be racked up and handicap his team for the rest of the pennant race. Dizzy Dean will tell you that you can get hurt in this one, against a power-packed field, much worse than you can in an ordinary ball game. One gent trying to duck a foul ball will catch it squarely on the eye. (Tomorrow all of the fellows at the office will ask him "what does the other guy look like?" Feller Still Fastest If Herb Score and Bob Turley both get into the game, one of the most interesting items should be a poll of the hitters as to which of them appeared to be the fastest. (And the prospects are that veteran hitters still would put their Cough on the old Bob Feller.) Red Schoendienst of the Cardinals still will be one of the best players on the field. (And one of the most unappreciated.) And, when the dust settles, the headlines will say: "National League beats American League in All-Star game, 5 to 4." Trabert last won the Clay Courts championship in 1951. He lost out in the finals last year to Bernard (Tut) Bartzen of San Angelo, Tex. who was seeded fourth for this year's competition.
