Reveal Cats’ Ability to Hear High Pitched Sound Better Than Humans By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor NEW ORK (UP)—The noises which cats hear better than people are the high-pitched noises. For low-pitched noises, people don’t have to feel inferior to cats. People hear them just as well, perhaps better. Oddly, there was no precise information before. Here science is entering a new world of knowledge. Cats, it now can be said with finality, hear sounds pitched at frequencies of 60,000 cycles per second. But people have very keen ears if they hear sounds pitched at 20,000 cycles per second. Anything above that they simply do not hear at all. So the upward hearing range of cats is three times that of people. Mighty Sharp Hearing Where cats hear best, is at 8,000 cycles per second. However, their hearing remains mighty sharp all the way up to 40,000 cycles per second. People hear best the noises which are pitched between 2,000 and 4,000 cycles per second. Above 4,000 CPS, their hearing sensitivity falls off very rapidly and reaches its extreme limits at 20,000 CPS. But for low-pitched sounds — from 62.5 CPS to 2,000 CPS—cats and people are even stephen in deed, said the scientists who made the studies. “There is some suggestion that for the very low frequencies (below 500 CPS) the cat may not be as sensitive as man.” William D. Neff and Joseph E. Hind, who were reporting to members of the Acoustical Society of America, said they were hesitant in suggesting even this hearing advantage for people over cats because they couldn’t prove it beyond a lingering doubt. If people have such an advantage, it is very slight,” they said. Cats “Conditioned” First Neff and Hind found out about cats by “conditioning” them first. This was done quite simply. A continuous tone was sounded for four seconds. If the cats didn’t get up and run in three seconds, they got an electric shock — through the steel-barred floor of their cage. The cats learned quickly that a continuing tone meant trouble if they didn’t move. Having done that, Neff and Hind varied the pitch of the tone from 62.5 CPS to 60,000 CPS. Its intensity or loudness was set at the point where it was clearly audible (to cats) but without being overwhelming. Cats being the kind of animals they are, the scientists took precautions against being crossed-up by them. These possible quirks in cat behavior which were avoided, they called “spontaneous responses.” They took their facts about the hearing of people from the work of other scientists — people have been carefully studied from many aspects. Since cats haven’t been as regards hearing, they thought it “desirable” to do so. But they have come to a decision. They aren't moving out of "the office." The office is a $60 a month cubicle at the rear of a narrow four-story building on Manhattan's West 55th street. It is barely 10 feet square and contains a spinet piano, a sofa, three straight-backed chairs and a phonograph. During working hours (10 to 6) it also contains Adler & Ross, who find the atmosphere just perfect for songwriting. Out of the office came the words and music for the current hit musicals "Pajama Game" and "Damn Yankees," including four of the top songs hits of the past months—"Hey There," "Hernando's Hideaway," "Heart," and "Whatever Lola Wants." The score of "Damn Yankees" alone produced material for more than 50 single records now on the market. "We're getting a little crowded," Adler apologized when a reporter and a lady from RCA Victor dropped by the other day, Ross, fortunately, was out. That left room for their secretary, a pretty blonde who had set up a portable typewriter on the phonograph lid and was doing her best with some correspondence. "I think what we'll do is rent another office somewhere and use it for business. But we'll keep this place to work in. It has the kind of atmosphere we need sort of a pressure to get work done, and no distraction." The windows look out on a blank brick wall, an alley and some trash cans. No Plans Adler confided that he and Ross are kind of at loose ends as far as doing a new show is concerned. They are busy getting ready to launch their own music publishing company, and Adler is going to Europe for a couple of months to soak up some atmosphere. Adler & Ross are the newest and possibly the youngest songwriting team to hit the big time on Broadway. Adler is 31, Ross 26. Both are New Yorkers. Ross studied music at N.Y.U. but Adler, though he is the son of concert pianist Clarence Adler, has had no formal music education. Unlike most songwriting teams, neither one specializes in words or music. They collaborate in the fullest sense. "We keep meticulous office hours. It's the only way to get things done.
