SPORTS By Ed Mullen BULLETIN SPORTS EDITOR It's Earl Rapp's opinion that no manager or coach can really make a hitter, although a few have tried with often times terrible results. Rapp, the hard-hitting right fielder for the San Diego Padres who's like just one more shot at the majors, became very emphatic about that point when the name of Rogers Hornsby came up yesterday at a baseball luncheon in Los Angeles. A few of the Padres were there together with Star's representatives because the two teams square off this week at Gilmore Field, Hollywood. "A manager or coach can point out what a fellow is doing wrong. More often, they can help him through an emotional trouble, but they can't make him a hitter," said Rapp, always considered a consistently good hitter in the minors, but nowhere when it came to the big top. "A manager can change a hitter's style," offered Red Munger of the Stars. "That's true," said Rapp. "And changing a fellow's style sometimes isn't easy." Pads' Left Fielder Dick Sisler, ex-Phillies' star, nodded agreeably from across the table. "I've offered just about all the coaches in either league a chance to improve my average, but have they been able to do it? The other day I asked an umpire who made a bad call to give me a break. I told him I was trying to raise my average from .216 to .219. But do you think he'd help?" Dick smiled. Rapp said he had his biggest chance at playing regularly in the majors when he was with the St. Louis Browns in '51. "Hornsby used to tamper with every hitter. He'd often confuse them. TOLD OFF HORNSBY AND OUT Like small business telling off big business, I told off Hornsby and he was big business at the time. I got closed out," said Rapp. "Lefty O'Doul used to be a lot like that," said Sisler. "Of course, he wasn't as extreme as Hornsby." "That's what I like about our manager," said the Stars' Munger, looking toward Bragan. "He never tries to teach our guys how to hit." Sisler chucked. "He's looking for the players to show him how." Rapp said he never really had a chance to play when Pro Ball Gets Under Your Skin, Says Paul LOS ANGELES — Do Paul, captain and veteran linebacker of the Los Angeles Rams, has changed his mind about retiring and has signed a contract with the Rams for 1935. It will be Paul's eight season with the pro football club. The former UCLA center had indicated at the close of the 1934 season that he would not be back this year but said upon signing the 1935 contract Tuesday: "Pro football gets under your skin. As the season drew near, I realized I wanted to play another year particularly since meeting the new coach, Sid Gillman. Stanton Winner In Church 'B' The Stanton Community, passed by Chuck Sowers whose hit left center scored two runs, feated Church of Christ 3-2 night in a 'B' softball game. The blow by Sowers was instrumental in breaking up closely waged pitchers duel between George Cruz and Ron Feller, the latter hurling for the winners. Zion Lutheran managed to gain an early lead over White Temple for a 4-2 win. Both team got five hits each, with White Temple posting two errors. Walter Steinbrink was the winning pitcher, with Pinky Hamilton tossing for the losers. "He's looking for the players to show him how." Rapp said he never really had a chance to play when up with the Giants, although Leo Durocher was always great to him. "I never had an argument with Leo about not playing," said Earl. "The Giants were such a solid team that year, I just couldn't break into that lineup. I knew it, too." However, the 33-year old Rapp claims he's every bit as good as he was the last time up there. "I know I could last at least two or three seasons," he added. Bragan was asked what he consistently liked to call against Rapp. "A knuckle ball," was Bobby's reply. "Yeh, the kind you can catch," retorted Sisler, "the nice, soft ones." Harry Bracheen's recent performances were mentioned. "I just can't see why he's getting so much comment," said Rapp. "What's he got? I don't see why there's so much fuss about him." "Isn't 12 wins good enough?" snapped the veteran Munger. "What does a pitcher have to do? How would you like to see his knuckle ball every night?" "Quiet, you old goat," chided Rapp. TED JUST HAS MORE OF EVERYTHING The recent performance of Red Sox Outfielder Ted Williams was brought up. "Ted has more of everything and lots of it compared to other hitters. That's why he can go in there cold after a long layoff and still make those supposedly in their prime-look sick." said Munger. The Sacramento Solons were a pitiful club earlier in the year, but have made great strides at improvement, according to Rapp. "We beat them seven games straight," he said. "Harry Bright has helped make them look much better". ...Stars' Catcher Bill Hall says he helps his pitcher get the best of a strike call on low balls because of his low position behind the batter. "If I'm low behind the batter, I can get those low pitches without any effort which I think influences the umpire." Hall remarked... Freese, Vico, Roberts and Del Greco of the Stars are all batting better than .300. Baseball in Brief Told in a Nutshell PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W L Pct.
