A group of local fisherman caught seven albacore this week fishing off the boat Andele out of Newport Harbor. The craft was skippered by Phil Tozer.
The party fished approximately 60 or 70 miles out which would be south and east of San Clemente Island. There were a few sport boats fishing the area with just fair luck. However, later in the day, the commercial boats fishing the area reported the albacore really began to hit. One boat reported by radio that it had 85 fish before 5 p.m.
The largest albacore caught on the Andele weighed about 16 pounds and was caught by Rev. Edwin Pflug of Anaheim. Other lucky anglers included Al Nelleson, Frenchy Le Sout, Walt Henning, Gail Vary and Bob Williams who was high man with two longfins. The fish weighed about 12-13 pounds and all but two were taken on feather trolling.
Anaheim albacore enthusiasts are hoping for an active season. There are good signs as the commercial fishing boats in lower California operating around the Guadalupe Islands regions are getting 300-400 jig fish daily.
Other local fishermen on the Andele included Sam Landa, Gramp Roouet, Paul Pletz, Vic Brown, Len Buoas, Bill Hunstock and Frank Jackett.

MERELY MATTER OF DOLLARS AND CENTS
The decision to hold the Marciano—Moore fight in New York's Yankee Stadium smarted Matchmaker Babe McCoy of Los Angeles who had his million dollar plus offer turned down. However, the New York IBC couldn't afford to take any gamble whatsoever. They know what Rocky will draw in New York and it involves a matter of dollar and cents... "I hope it's a rousing success, but New York's been beaten to death with fights," said McCoy. "I still think this would have been the logical place." For fight fans who couldn't afford the heavy tab if the bout were held locally, it was a blessing.
BIKE DAY PREPARATIONS COMPLETED
On Wednesday, July 13, Bike Day will be held at 3:00. All cyclists will meet at the city park and in procession continue on to the AUHS athletic field.
There are two divisions for the contests. Boys and girls six through 12 constitute division A and boys and girls, ages 12 through 16 are classified in division B. Both divisions will compete for the best-decorated bicycles. Other contests include a throwing contest of ability for accurate throw, a balancing test, and speed races. The individual stunts judged most skillful will receive awards.
Two grand sweepstakes prizes for the top cyclist in each division have been donated by Orval's Bike Shop and Wisser's Sporting Good Store. Two other drawing awards have been given by Bob Williams and West Auto Certificates and ribbons will be awarded the first second, and third place winners of each competition.
Their first special activity of the summer Recreation program has been planned to increase the enjoyment of Anaheim's young cyclist and to further emphasize the safety precaution every cyclist should take during the summer months. Judges for this event will be Mrs. Howard Harvey, Mrs. Williams Bushmen and Mrs. Jerry Schmitz.
Requirements for bike day include a current city license. All two and three wheelers are eligible.

Stars -- Padres Resume Series Rest of Week
HOLLYWOOD UP — The Hollywood Stars take their holiday today, along with the rest of the Pacific Coast League.
The locals managed to continue to bang at least one homer per game in the last ten contests yesterday but still could only split a twin bill with the league-leading San Diego Padres. The Stars won the first, 13-6, but dropped the second, 8-6.
The split plus a double win by Portland resulted in the Stars going into fourth place one-half game behind Portland and eight and one-half behind San Diego.
Hollywood recovered from a 3-0 Padre lead to take the first game before 8,388 fans. A six-run fourth inning did the trick with Lee Walls collecting his fifteenth home run of the season. Saven pitchers saw action in the opener with George O'Donnell (7-5) credited with the win and Eddie Erautt (11-5) being tagged with the loss.
Hollywood managed to come from behind in the second game also, but the club couldn't hang on after a four-run rally by San Diego in the fourth frame. Curt Roberts' home run continued the Stars' string.
The nigt capp resembled the opener not only in respect to rallies in the fourth inning but also on the subject of pitchers. Seven
96-Foot Ketch Reported at Ten Knots; Newport's Odyssey in Second Place
SAN PEDRO (UP) — Richard Rheem's 96-foot ketch Morning Star, representing the Los Angeles Yacht Club, led a record fleet of 53 yachts on the open sea today in the 2225-mile 19th Transpacific Yacht Race from the mainland to Honolulu.
The Morning Star, holder of the elapsed time record of 10 days, 10 hours and 12 minutes for the distance, swept into the lead soon after the race began at Los Angeles Harbor at noon yesterday. At last reports, the ketch was making more than 10 knots in a 12 mile an hour westerly breeze.
Grace Steel's Odyssey, a 58-foot yawl representing the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, was reported in second place, with Jim Michael's 58-foot yawl Baruna from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco in third place.
However, the winner of the race is decided on a handicap basis.
Two boats, James Camp's 59-foot yawl Escapade of the Los Angeles Yacht Club and the 45-foot yawl Jada, owned by George Sturgis, San Marino, Calif., hit reefs at the outset of the race.
The Escapade reportedly lost a part of her centerboard but continued on, and the Jada dragged across the reef but apparently suffered only negligible damage.
The 63-foot cutter Orient became a casualty when it lost its mast near Catalina Island.
All but two of the boats in the race took the normal route into the open sea, around the west end of Catalina Island. However, the State Sees Large Anchovy Schools

The clubs will resume their series tomorrow night with Hollywood's Red Munger and the Padres' Lloyd Dickey probable pitchers.
Milwaukee on Way to Attendance Mark
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (UP) — The Milwaukee Braves are well on their way to another National League attendance record with 1,006,215 paid admissions already lured through the gates at Milwaukee County Stadium.
Despite a disastrous weekend, with the Braves losing four out of five games, an Independence Day crowd of 30,948 sat through heat in the mid-90's as the Braves dropped two games to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Last year the Braves didn't pass the million mark until the 14th of July, although they have been the first major league club to break the million mark for three straight years.
Kramer Willing to Tour With Trabert
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Professional tennis star Jack Kramer probably would be willing to go on a tour with newly-crowned Winston-Salem champion Tony Trabert if the younger player turns pro it was reported today.
Trabert, 25-year-old Cincinnati, O., netter, said after his Wimbledon victory that he might turn professional.
Trabert's statement led 34-year-old Tom Reinhardt recommend a tour matching himself as the best draw-in Trabert as the newest tennis star, Kramer said such outset of the race.

However, the 109-foot, 10-inch schooner Ramona, the largest boat in the race, owned by William Pomeroy, San Francisco, and the Nordlys, a 72-foot schooner owned by Walter S. Patterson 'Off Water For Quite Awhile'
BATAVIA, N.Y. (UP) — Greta Patterson, attractive 18-year-old blonde swimmer who conquered the 15-mile expanse of Lake Erie between Angola, N.Y., and Crystal Beach, Ont., rested at her Batavia home today, content "not to see any more water for quite a while."
Gamely battling choppy water and stomach cramps a good part of the long haul, Miss Patterson was pulled from the lake at 7:38 o'clock last night, just 13 hours and three minutes after she plunged into the 65-degree water off Angola Beach.
A crowd estimated at 30,000 greeted the 138-pound long distance swimmer with thunderous cheers as she reached the Crystal Beach Amusement Park pier.
Waiting on the pier was her mother, Mrs. Guy W. Patterson, with tears streaming down her face. After a warm embrace by her mother, Greta was taken to a first aid room where she rested.
"I am very tired but I feel wonderful," she gasped. "I thought I'd never make it but I did."
LIONETTES IN LEAD
ORANGE (OCNS) — Retaining first place in the PCWSL, the Orange Lionettes completed a four-game sweep as they defeated the Phoenix Ramblers, 3 to 0, and, 3 to 2, in a Fourth of July double header. Orange now holds a 17-7 loop record as they lead the second place Ramblers.
FULLERTON (OCNS)—Playing three games in three days didn't phase the Fullerton Junior American Legion baseball team one bit.
Glenn Walters' powerhouse defeated Garden Grove twice and Anaheim once to gain their ninth-straight victory of the season and retain top spot in the county standings. The Fullerton Legion team is undefeated this year.
The defending county champs scored 46 runs in their three games, while limiting their opposition to a mere one run.
In Saturday's game in Fullerton, the Cardinals walked away with their 17-0 win. Sunday in Garden Grove, the two teams met again and Fullerton won again, 19-1.
Monday, Fullerton celebrated the July 4 holiday by exploding fireworks all over La Palma Park for their highly-impassive 10-0 win over Bob Brann's Anaheim crew.
