A MILLION DOLLARS??
Rocky's New Fight May Be First Genuine Test
NEW YORK (UP) — Rocky Marciano's million-dollar fight with Archie Moore at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 20 may be the heavyweight champion's first genuine test of greatness.
For more than a year, many of the nation's outstanding sports writers have been demanding that Rocky defend against ancient Archie because he alone seemed to possess the weapons that might dethrone the Brockton bruiser.
The pressure became so great after Moore's impressive third-round knockout over Bobo Olson on June 22 that he no longer could be given the run-around, and the big match was announced Friday.
Al Weill, Marciano's manager, greatly preferred big Bob Baker of Pittsburgh as challenger; for he appeared far less dangerous than the canning, long-armed, hard-hitting light heavyweight champion. But Moore, the public demand challenger, had to be accepted, instead.
Marciano, who will be 31 on Sept. 1 is the ring's first perfect-record heavyweight champion. But he has not been generally accepted as "great" yet, despite his 48 consecutive victories and 42 knockouts as a professional.
When Rocky strives for victory and "greatness" on Sept. 20, the battle is expected to attract a gate of at least $750,000, according to promoter Jim Norris.

the leading hitter in the Pacific Coast League, is out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle but he will play again, team physician Dr. Dan Delprat said today.
The 28-year-old "hard luck kid" suffered a compound fracture of the right ankle sliding into third base after slamming a triple off the center field wall in San Francisco last night.
The eighth inning accident stunned the 2,402 Seals Stadium fans who, until then, had been enjoying a runaway victory over league-leading San Diego. The final score was 16-1.
DiPietro's hit — his third of the night — drove in two runs and raised his batting average to .373.
The hustling first baseman appeared to start his slide too late and rammed the bag full tilt with his right foot. He was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken in an ambulance to St. Luke's hospital where doctors put a cast on his foot.
Charile Wallgren, Boston Red Sox scout who signed DiPietro to a contract on his graduation from a San Francisco high school in 1947, saw the accident and termed it "a terrible tragedy."
He was sure to be drafted, if not purchased, by a major league club." Wallgren said.
"Deep" had been plagued by injuries ever since he started his pro career.
Entered in the race will be Basha of Anabeim, an industrial engineer at Northrop, who will say his yacht "Typee" in the West Coast classic. Among the eight of his crew will be Richard Larzelew of Balboa.
"The crew are all experienced yachtsmen," said Basha, who is making his first entry in the race. The 42-foot "Typee" is a German built boat which Haas has owned for a year and a half and was built in 1947 by Abeking-Rassmussen.
Starting line for the 53 yacht entered will stretch for 1000 yards. From the bell bowy of San Pedro Lighthouse to a flag situated alongside the committee Boat Caronl and Coast Guard.
An area of one square mile will be cleared for the Transpacific fleet while another four square miles will be jammed with a spectator fleet of more than 1500 vessels.
William Severance, chairman and his race committee will source preparatory signals and report the boats and time of departure to the race committee in Hololulu. Should a yacht exceed the starting line before the final gun, it will be hailed by radio to turn around and restart.
Destined to be the most colorful race in transpacific yacht club annuals, the 1955 biennial event has the largest entry for any deep water race of this length in history of yachting.

Two Californians Clash Today At Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON; England, (UP) — Beverly Baker Fleitz and Louise Brough, two of California’s widely-respected tennis daughters, clashed today in the title round of the Wimbledon championships.
Mrs. Fleitz, a 25-year-old nousewife from Long Beach, Calif., was a 3-1 favorite to conquer Miss Brough in their center-court “battle of the blondes.”
Late Bulletin
WIMBLEDON, Englaa! on—Louise Brough of Beverly Hills Calif., called on all her tennis experience to beat Beverly Baker Fleitz of Long Beach, Calif., 7-5, 8-6, today and win the Wimbledon women’s championships for the fourth time.
Miss Brough, however, is an old-time star at Wimbledon and has all the shots necessary to spring an upset. The 32-year-old court veteran from Beverly Hills has won the Wimbledon singles crown three times and another victory today would make her the first four-time winner since Helen Wills.
However, regardless of the outcome, the United States was certain of claiming both singles titles. Freckle-faced Tony Trabert of Cincinnati clinched that honor for the U.S. forces Friday when he walked off with the men’s crown by whipping Denmark’s Kurt Nielsen, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1.
It marked the seventh time in the last 10 years that a U.S. player added in the second inning Jill Formola hit a base h
