SPORTS BOB ZIMMER. Editor Relaxation Is Secret of Success Says Skeet Champ By HAL WOOD United Press Sports Writer RENO, Nev. (UP)—The key to success in athletics has more to do with a person's nervous system than muscular coordination. That isn't another report from the American Medical Association. Instead it is the long-considered opinion of one of the world's greatest all around athletes. His name is Ed Castagnetto. Oh, you never heard of him? Well, he is the former national skeet shooting champion (1951); is one of the West's finest amateur golfers and was a star baseball and basketball reformer in high school. In fact, after getting out of school, he played with a strong semi-pro baseball team for a couple of years with another guy who had quite a bit of athletic talent, feller named Joe DiMaggio. Man To Beat Castagnetto, at 42, still rates as the "man to beat" in National Skeet shooting competition and in western amateur golfing circles. But getting back to the nervous system. “If you can go into a match with a relaxed attitude,” says Cas, “you have a better chance to perform well. There are millions of guys with fine muscular coordination. But only a few of the true champions have the nerve control that makes them great. Ben Hogan and Sam Snead are the best examples in the world of golf.” Castagnetto, San Francisco roofing contractor, spends very little time in practicing the current sports in which he excels. The only time he goes skeet shooting is in a tournament; and the same just about holds true on the golf course. Always Relax “But I always go into a match fairly well relaxed and so am able to give a good account of myself,” he says. However, this relaxation business can go too far some times. He led 2-1 until the sixth when he loaded the bases. Hatton then blasted a grand-slam homer into the upper right field stands and the Red Sox went on to win, 8-6. Despite the loss, Giant Manager Leo Durocher said Giel had impressed him. "He surprised me with his fast ball," Durocher added. "I wouldn't be afraid to throw him in relief." Several other youngsters received opportunities in exhibition games Monday night. Moe Savransky, Cincinnati's highly regarded 25-year old southpaw, made his first start for the Reds and beat the Tigers, 6-2, while 20-year old Tom Qualters, a bonus pitcher, made his first start for the Phillies and defeated the Athletics, 3-2, in a seven-inning game. Eighteen-year old Ralph Terry of Binghamton in the Eastern League won a 5-2 victory over the world champion Yankees, while Laurin Pepper, Pittsburgh's new bonus pitcher, made his debut against Cleveland in a game won by the Indians, 10-2. Another 18-year old, shortstop Ed Herstek, played for the Giants against the Red Sox even though he was signed only a few hours before and was awaiting assignment to Mayfield, Ky., of the Class D Kitty League. But perhaps 50-year old Mike Ryba, the Cardinal coach who is known as "Old Folks," received the biggest kick of all. He pitched two innings against Rochester and was credited with the Cards' 3-2 victory over their farm hands. SPORTS PARADE OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK (UP) — Boxing is getting ready today to institute a hall-of-fame and the original election promises to provide a bigger battle than any of the candidates ever fought. You can get agreement on the first half dozen clouting nominees. But with the boxing Boswells limited to fighters of the last 35 years, it develops into a free-for-all from that point on. Just to let you in to the argument, here's Fearless Fraley's ballot on the 10 greatest fighters through that period. And to bolster your ammunition, I'll list them for you in order: 1. Jack Dempsey; 2. Henry Armstrong; 3. Benny Leonard; 4. Sugar Ray Robinson; 5. Joe Louis; 6. Harry Greb 7. Mickey Walker; 8. Gene Tunney; 9. Rocky Marciano; 10. Tony Cansonerl. Some Good Ones Ignored This ignores such fabled fighters as Jimmy McLarnin, Lew Tendler, Lou Ambers, Barney Ross, Marcel Cerdan, Lew Jenkins—and on into the night. With Dempsey's selection there can be no argument. The Mauler, who will be 59 Thursday, still could chill a lot of these stiff masquerading as heavyweights. Armstrong was a real fighting man who in 1938 at one time held the featherweight, welterweight and lightweight championships—a three-way feat never accomplished before or since. Leconard was another who loved the business and worked hard and successfully at it. He held the lightweight title seven years before retiring undefeated, which is a remarkable feat in that crowded division. Robinson, both as welter and middleweight champion, rightfully was regarded as, pound for pound, one of the greatest ever to tie on the gloves. Louis, you may think, deserves a high place in this league. CITY A LEAGUE W L Pet. Lecnard was another who loved the business and worked hard and successfully at it. He held the lightweight title seven years before retiring undefeated, which is a remarkable feat in that crowded division. Robinson, both as welter and middleweight champion, rightfully was regarded as, pound for pound, one of the greatest ever to tie on the gloves. Louis, you may think, deserves a higher ranking. But, one of the greatest of them all, he lost a lot of lustre with a comeback in which he lost to Ezzard Charles and was kayoed by Rocky Marciano. That must fit into the overall picture. Greb A Top Choice Greb, too, should draw support on the necessary 75 per cent of the boxing ballots. Only a middle-weight, he won the light-heavyweight title from Gene Tunney and was definitely a fighter's fighter. From there the argument rages, however. Mickey Walker isn't too much of a question because the "Toy Bulldog," although only five-feet, 7-inch tall, battled all the way up to a crack at the light-heavyweight crown. Tunney draws scattered opinion from the fight mob but I've got to go with a man who retired undefeated as heavyweight champion of the world. Marciano gets my vote because, while he may not be a skilled boxer, he has proved in three title defenses that he's a fighting man. And Canson I proved his greatness as a two-time lightweight and junior welterweight champion who fought them all. This may not be the victorious 10 when the votes are counted—but I don't see how the first seven can miss.
