Quentin Reynolds Wins
Suit Against Pegler
NEW YORK — A federal court jury today awarded author Quentin Reynolds $175,000 damages in his libel suit against Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler.
The mixed panel of eight men and four women announced its decision after deliberating 10½ hours.
Salvation Army Seeks Children's Clothing
The close of school has brought a flood of requests to the Salvation Army Social Service Center which serves this area for all kinds of summer clothing, lawn swings and other outdoor furniture, according to Brigadier William J. Parkins, manager.
He reported that because of men are turning to the Salvation army for work. The social service program is being expanded to meet the increasing load, requiring a larger inflow of salvage materials. The Center continuously needs men’s and women’s clothing, furniture, shoes, dishes, mattresses, bedding, kitchen utensils, home appliances, silverware, stoves, radios and bric-a-brac.
The Salvation Army leader urged local residents to telephone Keystone 5-4631 to bring a Red Shield truck to home or office to collect castoff articles.

Named in the verdict were Pegler, the Hearst Corp., owner of King Features which syndicates Pegler’s column, and Hearst Consolidated Publications Inc., owner of the New York Journal American which publishes the column here.
Pegler was directed to pay Reynolds $100,000; The Hearst Corp. to pay him $50,000, and Hearst Consolidated to pay him $25,000. The jury also awarded Reynolds $1 in compensatory damages.
Reynolds Defamed
Reynolds had sued for $500,000, charged that a 1949 column by Pegler had defamed his courage and morals and impaired his ability to earn a living. The trial lasted seven weeks.
Reynolds, who was in the courtroom when the jury announced its verdict said he was "very happy" and asked newsmen, "how about that $1?" His wife broke into tears.
Pegler had left the courtroom shortly after the jury retired. His attorney, Charles Henry, asked Federal Judge Edward Weinfeld for a 30 day stay of execution. Weinfeld granted a 20 day stay.
It was reported that Pegler is protected by a clause in his contract from paying personally any libel damages awarded against him. Presumably, his publishers would pay his $100,000 assessment under such terms.
Terms of Libel
In the 1949 column, Pegler said Reynolds had been seen "nuding along the public road" with "his"

Terms of Libel
In the 1949 column, Pegler said Reynolds had been seen "nuding along the public road" with "his girl friend of the moment," and that Reynolds had proposed marriage to the widow of Heywood Broun on the way to the graveyard after Brown's funeral.
Pegler also intimated that Reynolds was pro Communist and called him "yellow" and an "abstentee war correspondent."
Weinfeld told the jury that Pegler had offered "no competent evidence to support the truth" of the statements about Reynold's alleged nudism or his alleged proposal of marriage. Weinfeld said the author was entitled to damages on those two counts "in addition to any other defamatory matters as to which you may find the defense has failed."

Open Blitzkrieg To Gain Support For Farm Plan
By LYLE C. WILSON
United Press Staff Correspondent
WASHINGTON (UP)—The administration is in the midst of a blitzkrieg effort to obtain a House majority this week for President Eisenhower's flexible support farm plan.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson is field commander with close support from Mr. Eisenhower. As things are shaping up, the President more likely than not would veto a high and rigid support bill such as was overwhelmingly endorsed by the House Agriculture Committee. Benson is busy on Capitol Hill where he makes a good impression.
Mr. Eisenhower is represented by some of his associates as beginning to believe that the farm vote actually is not the political power house it is supposed to be on the issue of support prices for the six basic crops covered by the existing subsidy legislation.
A survey of 1948 election returns is attracting considerable attention in administration circles. It relates entirely to the House of Representatives where the Republicans lost 75 seats in the 1948 election in which Harry S. Truman won a surprise victory over Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York.
Farm Vote Not Decisive
The report seems to show that the farm vote was far from a major factor in losing the House in 1948. Of the 75 setas lost to the Democrats, 30 were in congressional districts within metropolitan areas with cities over 500,000 population, such as the Los Angeles area, New York City and Phila-

Farm Vote Not Decisive
The report seems to show that the farm vote was far from a major factor in losing the House in 1948. Of the 75 setas lost to the Democrats, 30 were in congressional districts within metropolitan areas with cities over 500,000 population, such as the Los Angeles area, New York City and Philadelphia. Eighteen districts contained metropolitan areas of cities of 250,000 and over. The remaining 20 districts could be classed as semi-rural. Of these 20 districts the Republicans have regained only 10 since 1948.
Classifying as a farm district only one with at least 25 per cent of its population on the farm, this survey concluded that the Republican party was not defeated in 1948 by the farm vote.
Such statistics stiffen administration opposition to the farm bloc drive for high and rigid supports.
The administration drive is for votes of city members of the House and of those Farm Belt congressmen who may be persuaded that support of lower and flexible supports would not be politically suicidal. Much of the city support would have to come from Democrats.
Maps Circulated
Agricultural Marketing Service maps again are being circulated in an attempt to put the farm vote in perspective in relation to the basic supported crops — wheat, corn, cotton, rice, peanuts and tobacco. Iowa's cash receipts from those crops, for example, are 8 per cent of its total take from farm products; Nebraska's 24 per cent; Ohio's and Indiana's, 15 each.
Four states outside the South get 40 per cent or more of their commodity income from supported crops. They are Montana, 40, North Dakota, 44, Kansas, 42, and Kentucky, 40 per cent. Six southern states and North Dakota get less than 50 per cent of their cash receipts from non-supported commodities and dairy products while 42 states get 50 per cent or more.

Worys Blasts Britain’s Position On Southeast Asia as ‘Intolerable’
WASHINGTON — Rep. John M. Vorys R-Ohio attacked Britain's position on Southeast Asia as "intolerable," today despite Prime Minister Winston Churchill's agreement to push plans for the area's "collective defense."
Democratic members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee also expressed disappointment at the results of Churchill's "harmony talks" with President Eisenhower. But Acting Chairman H. Alexander Smith (R-NJ) was somewhat optimistic.
Mr. Eisenhower and his famous British guest officially closed their historic four-day conference here Monday by issuing a joint statement promising to "press forward" with collective defense plans in Southeast Asia whether France gets a truce in Indochina or not.
The two statesmen arranged to issue a second declaration today setting forth the "basic principles" guiding U.S. and British policies.
Leaving For Ottawa
With this, the 79-year-old Churchill and Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden planned to bid Mr. Eisenhower good-bye at the White House and fly to Ottawa this afternoon for talks with the Canadians.
In spite of the agreement to push plans for the defense of Southeast Asia, it appeared clear today that Churchill and Mr. Eisenhower failed to resolve their chief differences by a fairly wide margin.
Although the United States pressed for the quick creation of a Southeast Asian alliance, Britain agreed merely to begin immediate planning for some kind of collective defense. It did not retreat from its oposition to any definite move that might upset the Indochina truce effort.
It was learned Secretary of State John Foster Dulles himself believes the immediate planning agreement should have been reached at least three months ago. He feels it's better getting it now than never, however.
