Blind Ex-Marine Save Three From Drowning MOBILE, Ala. (UP)—Ex-Marine Charles Vines, 22, blinded by a mortar shell in Korea, was a hero today for saving three persons from drowning in a rescue by sound. Barbara Wood, 15, and Annie Louise Ball, 18, were wading along the banks of the swift Pascagoula River near Lucedale, Miss., late yesterday when they stepped into deep water and were quickly swept into midstream. James Peacock, 22, recovering from an illness, attempted to rescue the girls and he too was swept into midstream by a strong undercurrent. He shouted his predicament to Vines. Guided By Sound Vines, realizing he was the only one who could prevent them all from drowning, swam to the girls as they cried out for help. Since he could not see, he directed himself as best he could in the direction from whence their cries came. Barbara's mother, Mrs. James A. Wood, who with her husband was about a quarter of a mile from the scene, said Vines caught hold of the Ball girl and told the Wood girl to hang onto her. When they were about 40 feet from shore the Wood girl loosened her grip, saying "I think I can make it now." By the time Vines pulled the Ball girl ashore, however, Barbara had been swept back into midstream again. Makes Third Rescue Vines swam an estimated 200 yards, directing himself again toward the cries of the Wood girl and reached her just as she was going down. He brought her to When they were about 40 feet from shore the Wood girl loosened her grip, saying "I think I can make it now." By the time Vines pulled the Ball girl ashore, however, Barbara had been swept back into midstream again. Makes Third Rescue Vines swam an estimated 200 yards, directing himself again toward the cries of the Wood girl and reached her just as she was going down. He brought her to shore, then had to rescue Peacock whose recent illness had left him too tired to swim back to the river bank. Vines was blinded May 9, 1952 while fighting with the First Marine Division in Korea. The four, all from Mobile, were brought to a hospital here by the parents of the Wood girl. They were treated for "shock and exposure." Bert Kirchman, manager of the Northern Orange County Fruit Exchange, told the County Farm Bureau Citrus department a 50 per cent output drop is to be expected. He said market prices are up but crops are short. Some farmers, he declared, have less than 10 per cent of their normal crop. Agricultural Commissioner D. W. Tubbs and Dr. Robert Middleton, chiefs of smog research at Riverside Citrus Experiment Station, University of California. They declared research has shown no smog effect on citrus crops. Newly elected citrus department officers: Dick Basse, Brea, president; Max Hoepnter, Tustin; vice-president; and William Ritter, Irvine, secretary. San Pedro Harbor Fire Flares Again LOS ANGELES (UP) — A one-million dollar Los Angeles harbor fire, which destroyed nine huge gasoline tanks and damaged two others, flared up again today but was squelched quickly by firemen. Flames shot up suddenly from pools of oil left from Friday night's explosion and fire which for a time threatened serius damage to the huge harbor where many ships were at anchor. "The flare up caused no further damage," a harbor spokesman said. "It lasted for about an hour. There may be more because the explosion area is still smoking. We'll just have to stand by until the fire burns out." The fire occurred in the 13-tank "farm" of the Tidewater Associated Oil Company's marine terminal. Ships were towed to safety after the first of the 55,000-barrel tanks exploded with an earth-shaking roar. Still missing and feared dead was G. A. Alders, 48, San Pedro who was checking gauges at the oil terminal at the time of the explosion. Meanwhile, H. B. Haney, a Tidewater Associated vice president said he believed sabotage was "improbable," although investigators will not know the cause of the fire until the oil-soaked area has burned out. Judge Praises State's Sex Deviate Treatment SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner last week pointed to the good in the state's program for treating sex deviates as he reviewed the case of Rodney Nelson, 20, of Anaheim. "Those who criticize the state laws governing the handling of sex psychopaths should examine this case," Gardner declared. Phone KE. 5-2158—KE. 5-2159 Founded June 20, 1921 Persons East of Rockies To See Eclipse of Sun NEW YORK — The moon is going to blot out the sun Wednesday and everyone east of the Rockies can have a look if they get up early enough and if there is no overcast. But the best place to have the look is from a path about 75 miles wide beginning in northeast Nebraska and cutting diagonally across Minnesota, Canada, the North Atlantic, Scandinavia, Soviet Russia, Iran, and ending in India. The blot-out will be complete along that path—nothing will be left of the sun but a halo for a minute or two. Elsewhere it will be a partial eclipse. In New Orleans about 60 per cent of the sun will disappear behind the moon. Guided Missile Research In this electronic-atomic age we human beings know so much about eclipses, we're going to see if we can use this one on Wednesday to get distance measurements which will permit pin-point accuracy in sending guided missiles over thousands of miles. Even though it makes us human beings seem even smaller and less important in the mighty scheme of the cosmos, the mechanics of a solar eclipse are quite simple. The moon gets between us and the sun. For the few minutes it stays in the way, the sun is blotted out or eclipsed. That's from our point of view. If we were looking at the earth from the moon, we'd see the moon's shadow projected onto a tiny spot on the earth—since the sun would be directly behind our moon. We'd see our moon shadow race across the earth-ball at a speed of some 3,000 miles an hour, covering approximately 8,000 miles if the two hours and 45 minutes it takes for our moon to cross in front of the sun. Calculations of the distance from North America to northern Europe are accurate only to within approximately 900 feet. High precision measuring of the speed of the moon shadow could reduce this error margin from 900 feet to a little over 100 feet. From any given spot on earth, a total eclipse of the sun is a once-in-a-life-time or raper event. Dr. William J. Luyten, professor of astronomy at the University of Minnesota, figured the intervals between eclipses for Minneapolis-St. Paul, which is the only major American city in Wednesday's "path of totality." The last one for that earth spot was on March 27, 1503, centuries before there was any Minneapolis-St. Paul; the next one after Wednesday's will happen on June 14, 2151, 197 years from now. Men Who Aided Escapee Given Year in Jail SANTA ANA (OCNS) — A trio of men who aided an Orange County jail escapee today was given three-year probation and sentenced to a year behind bars by Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner. George Ashkmin, 24, and Gary Smith, 23, were given one year in the county jail. Richard Smith, 25, on his own request, was ordered to Chino mens prison for a year. Knowledge of the precise speed of this shadow may help the guiding techniques for guided missiles. The Air Force has recruited 74 scientists, and has stationed them at 10, points along the "path of totality". BULLETIN Probe Possible Child-Neglect Case in Garden Grove SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Sheriff's deputies today are looking into a possible child neglect situation after they found three children had been forced to call on their neighbors or food in the Garden Grove area. In answer to a telephone call which told of the plight of three youngsters, deputies checked at 181 Glen Haven Drive, Garden Grove, Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Theima Cornwell, 35, mother, wasn't home, but David, 12, Laurel 4, and William 1 year and 6 months were. Deputies said there was little food in the house. Neighbors claimed the kids came to their house and asked for food many times. They also asserted the mother leaves the children alone for days at a time. Mrs. Cornwell works and the children's father reportedly is in Korea. COMPANY LOYALTY NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A former bus driver, William F.
