July Fourth Celebrants Warned of Fire Hazard With the Fourth of July weekend close at hand all residents of Orange County are being urged by Stat Forest Ranger J. A. Sherman to use extreme care with fire and fireworks over the holiday period. Because of a lush growth of grass resulting from winter rains and the extremely dry condition of the foothills and mountains a critical fire problem will exist in Southern California as thousands of motorists seek holiday recreation in the mountain areas. In the valley areas there is additional hazard to life and property from discharging of fireworks around homes and other buildings. Ranger Sherman pointed out that igniting or setting off fireworks of any description in forest, watershed, range or grass lands, is prohibited by law, and his Division will rigidly enforce these regulations over the critical holiday period. Safe and sane fireworks which are approved by the State Fire Marshal's Office are legal in the unincorporated valleys areas of Orange County if they are discharged in a safe area away from any dry grass, weeds or other flammable material; Firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles, aerial bombs and other dangerous fireworks are prohibited by State law. Close adult supervision of children who are permitted access of fireworks will do much to prevent injuries or burns and will promote a more fire-safe holiday. Ranger Scherman listed the following four suggestions to residents planning on trips to foothill and mountain areas of Southern California over July 4th weekend: 1. If you have purchased any fireworks, or are planning to do so, make certain that none are transported by you to any forest or mountain area. 2. If planning on camping out, or having a picnic fire, be sure to obtain the necessary campfire permit from a ranger. 3. Obey "No Smoking" closure signs. Remember — these areas are closed to smoking while driving through in your vehicle. Smoking is permitted only at place of habitation, camp grounds, and posted areas. 4. Certain areas are closed to all public use because of the extreme fire hazard. Respect the closed area fire prevention signs. Ranger Scherman said he is certain that many dangerous, potential fires can be prevented by every citizen observing these simple rules. Lemon, Anaheim LOGGER FINDS TOT MISSING TWO DAYS ON PEAK MARKLEEVILLE, Calif., (UP) A logger who "tried to think like a five-year-old" found little Kathy Paxton near the summit of an 8500-foot Sierra Nevada pass where she had wandered for two days. Alvin Van Dell, 30-year-old logger from Pine Grove, Calif., rescued Kathy yesterday on the west side of Kit Carson Pass, two miles south-east of the camp from which she wandered off Friday evening. She was sleepy and hungry after her ordeal, but otherwise in good spirits. An ambulance took her to the home of friends in Carson City, Nev. Her mother, Mrs. Phyllis Crandall, said the five-year-old Khy was "grumpy when we tried to put her to bed, but that's natural." Hurt by Tumble The little girl had fallen and blackened her right eye and had suffered a cut on the back of her head, along with several bruises. However, Capt. Edward Lundell of Stead Air Force Base, near Reno, said he was amazed there was no sign of a cold or chest congestion. Kathy spent two nights in the open in temperatures that fell as low as 34 degrees. She was wearing only a red cowboy suit under a light sweater. She had come with her mother and stepfather; Stephen Crandall of Cupertino, Calif., and her 6 1-2-yea r- old brother, Petey, to camp at Wood Lake in El Dorado National Forest. Friday evening she and Petey walked to public rest rooms a short distance from the Crandall camp. Petey came back, but Kathy did not. Here Named as Brinkler Distributor Pointment of the Home Engling Company as distributor of Boodyear Tire and Rubber Company's new all-weather, allunderground sprinkling systems announced this week by Foster, manager of Goodyear's products division, Akron, Ohio. Headed by C. M. McHenry and N. E. McGinnis, partners, the newly appointed distributor has served the Orange County area for six years. The result of long experience and experimentation by Goodyear engineers, the new sprinkling system combines the advantage of easy self-installation with flexibility and safety. Because it is unaffected by ordinary soil and water conditions, or sudden changes in temperature, the practically indestructible underground system has an indefinite life expectancy. Introduction of the new unit marks the first time a low cost permanent sprinkler system has been made available to the home owner. Located at 913 North Los Angeles Street, Anaheim, the company also handles John Mansville insulation and weather-stripping products. DR. C. M. O'BRIEN Palmer Specific Chiropractor KE. 5-7839 502 E.
