Educator Says Role of Nurses Changing
It is often more important for a nurse to know how to give a patient peace of mind than to take care of his physical illies believes Dean Lulu Wolf Hassenplug of the School of Nursing on the Los Angeles campus of the University of California.
"Do not misunderstand — I do consider training for care of seriously ill patients important," she adds. "What I am trying to say is that with today's medical advances and the so-called miracle drugs, the patient's chief worries now are about the time he'll lose from his job, his family's economic welfare, and other psychological factors."
Dean Hassenplug believes that today's professional nurse should have a broad, preferably collegiate background which will enable her to understand the psychological and socialological origins of her patients' problems.
"The current emphasis is on preventive medicine and rehabilitation," Dean Hassenplug points out. Yet we continue to stress training for the care of the acutely ill. It's time we broadened our teaching programs to fit the changing role of today's professional nurse."
