Here Are Four Suggestions For Integrating House, Lot
Every homesite has individuality. Each has its own special features, its own defects. The value of a new home has been greatly increased if construction took advantage of the lot's advantages while correcting its bad points.
Here are four suggestions from Small Homes Guide for a happy union of house and lot:
1. Preserve the desirable natural features of your lot as much as possible.
Let the contractor know in advance what trees and plants you want spared, what lot contours you want to retain. Point out, too, the low spots you want filled with dirt from the excavation.
2. Put the home in the best possible place on the lot.
Try to locate the house where you will be able to use the lot.
dwarfed by, or dwarf, neighboring homes
3. Orient the house to cooperate with nature.
Take advantage of the prevailing summer breezes, plan to shade the west side of the house and allow for maximum penetration of the winter sun with lots of windows on the south side.
4. Use every inch of your lot.
Normally a lot has three principal areas—public, facing the street; service, usually at the side; and private, at the rear. Today's trend is to make the private area as big as possible in order to enjoy outdoor living. Put the garage as far forward as possible; a long drive wastes space. If a deep setback from the street is necessary, make the normally public area at the front

HOME OWNERS' QUESTION BOX
A—Do you recommend patch-a leaky roof?
A—Not if the roof is old. The leaks you've already discovered are a sure sign that others will soon develop. The only economical way to repair an old roof is to recover it. Asphalt shingles properly applied, assure a weather-tight, fire-resistant roof that will see many years of service.
Q—How can I remove mildew from the outside walls of my house?
A—It can probably be removed with a mild alkaline solution such as trisodium phosphate or washing soda, according to American Builder magazine. This process may have to be repeated every few months until you repaint. When you do repaint, be sure to include a mildewcide in the paint.
Q—How can carpenter ants be eliminated from a house?
A—Locate the nest and spray it with carbon tetrachloride. Don't use kerosene or gasoline because these fluids are flammable and their use indoors is a fire hazard.
Q—How can a small table lamp be altered so that it will give a larger area of light?
A—Cement a block of wood to the base to raise the lamp. Then attach a wider shade. The result: a reading or sewing lamp.
Q—What is the best angle at which to operate an electric drill adapted as a sander?
A—Slightly less than half the sanding disc should touch the surface for the most effective operation. This means an angle of 30 to 45 degrees.
Fabric Covers Introduced For Refrigerator Doors
Kitchens are becoming more colorful. In keeping with this trend, refrigerators with fabric-covered doors now are available to housewives looking for ways to add new glamor to the kitchens, American Builder magazine says.
To increase color variation, the refrigerators are sold with an extra fabric which can be quickly and easily applied.

How to Make Aging House Look New
Beatrice West, New York color consultant, says that colors chosen in remodeling should be governed to a great extent by the size and shape of the house, climate, colors of neighboring houses, and the rural or urban nature of the area.
Here are several harmonious color schemes suggested by Beatrice West, illustrating the relation of color to size, shape and architectural style. In all examples, the color of the asphalt shingle roof serves as the key to the selection of colors used elsewhere on the house.
Tall, boxy house—A roof of black asphalt shingles "cuts feet" from the roof, making the house seem lower. Gray siding and charcoal shutters play down awkward proportions and large size. White windows and trim adds brightness. A carnation red door focuses the eye on the first floor and completes the job of "lowering" the house.
Colonial—Here is a reversal of the usual white colonial house with blue or green shutters—a roof of pastel blue asphalt shingles, gray-blue siding, and white shutters and trim. Painting the entrance door a deep blue completes a "modern color scheme that maintains the traditional feeling," Miss West notes.

Painting the entrance door a deep blue completes a "modern color scheme that maintains the traditional feeling." Miss West notes.
Expansion attic—To make the roof seem lower than it is, Miss West advises dark green shingles. Use dark green siding, off-white garage door and trim, and a warmoral for the front door.
Ranch—Start with a russet asphalt roof, especially if the house is in a rural setting. Try coral for the sidewalls and light gray for the trim. Bright peacock blue on the front door, window boxes and garage door stands out effectively in a house set among trees and shrubbery.
Craft pride comes from an assurance that there can be no finer material for any wall or ceiling need than genuine plaster.
Age-old, it has survived more than 5,000 years of service as a protective coating for walls and other structural surfaces. Today, the refinements of modern manufacture have added new qualities of fireproofing, beauty, durability and sanitation that make it unexcelled for all kinds of buildings.
