Orange Empire Girls League
Season Opens Tomorrow Night
FULLERTON (OCNS)—The Orange Empire Girls Softball League will begin the 1954 season tomorrow night with Cypress playing at Queen Park and Anaheim hosting Laguna Beach at the City Park in p.m.
The Anaheim Bloomer Girls, defending league champions, and Buena Park's Pirates are considered the teams to beat for the 1954 litte. Laguna Beach and Cypress will be contenders as they finished in the first division of last year's strong league.
Fullerton's Sluggerettes, the newest member of Orange County's teen-age girls softball alliance, are considered an outsider.
The league has undergone several radical changes with a new administration this year.
New rules adopted made the league better balanced and limited to teen-age girls.
Rebuilding Program
Anaheim's Bloomer Girls face a rebuilding program this season as the 1953 championship team lost its outstanding pitcher Doris Holve, to the Fullerton Sweethearts, San Gabriel Valley League team.
Karen Lenain, Marie Ann Dargats, Kay Turner and Janet Troutman followed Holve to Fullerton.
The league will be without the Orange Rockets for the first time since its founding. Fred Meyer of Orange disbanded his team and gave up the presidency because of business duties which make it impossible to devote the time to the team and to the league.
Brea and Tustin also withdrew from the loop.
Cypress is definitely entered, though H. G. Messer is seeking a manager to handle the club this year. Messer's work makes it impossible for him to take charge of the team as he did in previous matches.
Sweethearts Home For Two League Games This Week
FULLERTON (OCNS) — Fullerton's Sweethearts will play two games at Amerige Park this week. Tonight, the Sweethearts play Pasadena while on Saturday they entertain the league-leading Sawtelle Chromettes.
According to statistics compiled for the Sweethearts' four league games, Ziggy Davidson, the comely outfielder, is the toast of the Sweetheart hit parade. She has 8 blows for 12 trips racked up as the Sweetheart defeated Azusa, 5-0; Sun Valley, 5-3, and Pasadena, 22-3. She did not play against Norwalk, the only setback of the season for Fullerton.
Karen Lenain, .416; Mary Ann Dargatz, .357; Doris Holve, .333 and Jeannie Lee, .300, are among the league's best hitters.
Holve is now regarded as one of the best pitchers in the fast Southern California Girls Softball League:

Huntington Beach will be under a new manager, Barbara Cory, who is replacing Elsie (Sokey) Miller who relinquished the reigns of the team because of ill health.
Bruce Pierce will handle the Laguna Beach team this year. At a league meeting in Fullerton, Pierce said he would solicit the cooperation of Larry Hemus, Laguna Beach leather artist, and Malita Forster in running his ball club. Both were prominent in Fullerton sports activities before settling in the artist colony.
John Neubauer of Fullerton is the current Orange Empire League President and Patricia Ann Krueger, a Fullerton-Long Beach State college coed, who manages the Laguna Park team, is the loop' secretary.

SPORTS PARADE
OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK (UP) — Little Eddie Stankf likes to boast that his St. Louis team is an outfit with hair on its chest when it comes to bashing a baseball but apparently his pitchers have little hirsute adornmen under their waitcoats.
Stan Musial of the Cards is leading the National League in just about everything but soft drink sales while Ray Jablonskis is giving "The Man" quite a run in various ball-busting departments. Verily, the Cards are full of muscles—yet they labor along on the fringes of the second division.
Pitchers who specialize in gopher balls, as the home run is known to the trade, are one of the principle reasons.
Going into Wednesday's entertainment, the Cardinal pitchers were leading both leagues in home runs permitted. The total was 80 which even overshadowed the American League leading Athletics by a full eight.
Statley And Rasch iBanged
Considering that Stanky's hairy-chested batsmen had delivered a total of only 62 for the home side, tha leaves a deficit of 18 between the credit and debit sides of the ledger. The two principal Redbird culprits were Gerry Staley with 15 allowed and Vio Raschi with 13.
But they weren't the most cluted pitchers in the game. Tha dubious honor goes to the Philadelphia Phillies' Robin Roberts, wholed with a well-clobbered 16 until the As' Bob Trice had himself a rough afternoon Wednesday. Trice was 15 minutes too late to make this roll call, so Roberts stands with the home run hitters' popularity award for June in this corner.
Excluding Wednesday's contests, the Cardinal throwers led both leagues with 80 round-trippers delivered and were followed in their own circuit by Brooklyn and Cincinnati with 71 each; Chicago 63, Phillies 57, Pirates 52, Giants 50 and Milwaukee 33.
Erskine Runnerup
Carl Erskine was Brooklyn's big target with 14 and Harry Perkowski the chief Cincinnati victim with 12 allowed. Warren Hacker glumly led the Cubs with 10; Max Surkont the Pirates with 13; Sal Maglie the Giants with 15 and Gene Conley and Warren Spahn the Braves with seven each.
Cleveland pitchers were having a fine non-homer year with their total of only 29 because Early Wynn had 10 of that, otal himself. Washington was low in the league with 27 allowed and Baltimore had permitted but 33. The As were at the top with 72 followed by Detroit with 60, Boston 54, Chicago 44 and the Yankees 35.
Arnold Portocarrero and Mario Fricano were pacing the a's with 13 'each until Trice watched his specialties sail out of the park three times Wednesday. Steve Gromek led Detroit with 14 bye-bye tied with nine each for the Red babies; Bill Henry and Will Nixon Sox; Billy Pierce gave up nine against his White Sox, and Harry Byrd six agains the Yanks. Don Larsen led the Orioles with eight.
