Seek 'Mystery Girl' in Mail-Order Heir Death
CHICAGO — A lipstick smeared facial tissue raised speculation today that a "mystery girl" may have run from the room as mail order heir Montgomery Ward Thorne lay dying.
The tissue was found on a dresser in the $75-a-month studio apartment where young Thorne died under mysterious circumstances last Saturday.
The revelation led to speculation that Thorne may have had a tryst with a young woman who was possibly the last person to see him alive.
Meanwhile, Thorne's mother and fiance opened a legal battle over his $2,300,000 fortune.
The weapons in the court fight were two wills filed within an hour of each other in Probate Court yesterday.
One, drafted only 10 days before the young heir's death, left half his legacy to his pretty blonde fiancée Maureen Ragen, 18. The will left a quarter share to Miss Ragen's mother, an eighth to his own mother and an eighth to an aunt.
The other will, signed by Thorne when he was 18 years old, gave his entire estate to his socialite mother, Mrs. Gordon Thorne.
Attorneys for the mother said they would contest the changed will. They would charge "undue influence" and perhaps other factors, they said.
Thorne's lawyer, Jay Stough, has said the young heir feared he wouldn't reach his 21st birthday when he ordered his will changed. Thorne asked that a thorough investigation be launched if he died, the lawyer said.
An autopsy has failed to reveal the cause of Thorne's death.

Planners Set Hearing On Atwood Hog Ranch
SANTA ANA, (OCNS) — Whether a four-acre hog ranch will be established in the east Atwood area will be determined largely at a public hearing set for 3 p.m. July 24.
County Planning Commission yesterday set the hearing. Boisseranc Manassero seeks to set up the ranch on a four-acre parcel about 3000 feet south of Placentia Yorba boulevard and approximately 1 and ½ miles east of Atwood.
Maximum of 600 hogs would be fed on the ranch at any one time. It's an A-1 district.

Physicians Urged To Give More Care To Unwed Mothers
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — Dr. Goodrich C. Schauffler of Portland. Ore., urged physicians today to go "beyond the ordinary call" in caring for the increasing number of unwed mothers.
"I have seen too many impressively happy endings to believe that these matters cannot be decently handled—many of them by the physician," he said.
In a report to the American Medical Association, Schauffler said physicians can sow the seeds of a "certain mental and spiritual rehabilitation" for unwed mothers.
He urged doctors to advise unwed mothers against abortions, pregnancy, he said, may turn out to be a "maturing experience—often a distinct psychological advantage as compared to an abortion."
He said the number of unwed mothers rose from 88,000 cases in 1938 to 142,000 in 1950. Most of the unwed mothers are under the age of 20, and a much higher percentage than formerly are among girls of comparatively privileged groups, such as students and women with good jobs.
He said the growing number of illegitimate births stems from a greatly increased awareness of sex among young people, "simulated and maintained by sex hysteria which is a calculated instrument of modern journalism and so-called entertainment trends such as movies, radio, television, theater."
He also blamed poor home influences, liquor, narcotics, automobiles, auto courts and ganga influences for tending to stimulate

Santa Ana Family Stricken With Polio
SANTA ANA (OCNS)—Polio is venting its wrath on the Harvey Roughley family.
On June 15, young Richard Roughley died from the deadly disease. Now three more members of the Roughley household have been stricken by the dread enemy of mankind.
All are under treatment in the family home, 2118 Kilson Dr., Santa Ana. Diane, 11; Tom, 16; and Robert, 10, have contracted non-paralytic polio. Dr. Edward L. Russell, Orange County Health Officer, said their cases aren't serious.
Dr. Russell said the diagnosis was made first-hand by Orange County health officers.
Thirty-six cases of polio have been reported in the county this year. Two have been fatal.
He said the growing number of illegitimate birth stems from a greatly increased awareness of sex among young people, "simulated and maintained by sex hysteria which is a calculated instrument of modern journalism and so-called entertainment trends such as movies, radio, television, theater."
He also blamed poor home influences, liquor, narcotics, automobiles, auto courts and ganga influences for tending to stimulate sexual curiosity.
In addition, he said the availability of sex information "too often defeats its own purpose."
Young people nowadays are exposed to teachings such as those of Freud and Jung, and to research material such as that of Kinsey, without the cooperation of a mature intelligence.
"The result is an emotional shambles which fosters many of the deviations and denatured biological trends which are common among our young folks."

Woman Asks Damages For Death of Husband
SANTA ANA, (OCNS) — District Attorney James Davis predicted today that sugar heir Adolph B. Breckles, 11, will "probably be behind bars at the Orange County jail within the next 30 days."
"It seems to me," the D-A said. Breckles has exhausted all legal possibilities of staying out of jail and not serving his sentence. Here is no constitution question involved, so I don't see how he could possibly go to the U.S. Supreme Court."
The Orange County prosecutor said that the decision of the California Supreme Court should be brought to him within the next 30 days. The state court today refused to hear the appeal. Breckles' conviction for assaulting his former wife, actress Mary Williams. "When the decision brought to me, Davis said, we automatically notify the handsman to surrender the prison."

SANTA ANA — (OCNS) — The Governor and the Lieutenant Governor nominee of Nevada were to arrive in Orange County today to map strategy to fight off a Civil Aeronautics Board attempt to drop Orange County airport from the route of Bonanza Airlines Meanwhile, the Orange County Board of Supervisors yesterday instructed County Counsel Joel E. Ogile to journey to Weshington on July 13 to appear before the C.A.B. hearing.
Ogile will argue that commercial air service to Orange County airport shouldn't be halted as a CAB examiner has recommended.
The CAB hearing concerns a recommendation that Bonanza service be terminated to the Santa Ana airport. The line has been stopping at the county field twice a day on Los Angeles to San Diego run. It is proposed the planes stop instead at Ontario.
The two top Nevada officials will appear at the airline's board of directors meetings at the Balboa Bay Club—following Bonanza's established policy of holding board meetings in the various cities along its system.
Governor Charles H. Russell of Nevada, and Rex Bell, Republican Lt. Governor nominee, are the two officials. Governor Russell will also appear as a witness at the Civil Aeronautics Board hearing in Washington, D.C. concerning the re-certification of the local service carrier. The CAB'S final action in this re-certification will affect air service in this area.
The chairman of the board of directors is Lawrence G. McNeil, president of the McNeil construction Company of Los Angeles. Other board members in attend-
Woman Asks Damages For Death of Husband
SANTA ANA — (OCNS) — A quarter-million dollar demand was placed before the Board of supervisors yesterday by Mrs. Edith P. Lineau of 324 Amethyst Avenue, Balboa Island, as the result of the death of her husband. The move was seen as a fore-runner of a suit against the county for damages.
Mrs. Lineau charges that her husband, Robert K. Lineau, was killed in a collision with an automobile being driven by Beth Paradzick, a nurse from the Costa Mesa School District. The supervisors referred the demand to County Counsel Joel E. Ogile.
Also named in the demand was the Costa Mesa Elementary School District, with whom Miss Paradzick is employed at 17th and Tustin avenues.
