Announce Final Plans For Alice Marble Net Clinic Final plans for the Alica Marble tennis clinic to be held at the City Park courts at 2 p.m., Friday were announced today by the Anaheim Recreation Department and the Anaheim Tennis Club. The afternoon's activities will get under way with Miss Marble working with three local netters who will serve as "gulnea pigs" in demonstrating the fundamental strokes as Miss Marble discusses them with the audience. The group observing will then be invited to over with Miss Marble any difficulties which they may be experiencing in any of their strokes. Concluding the program which is without charge to the spectators and which is expected to run for several hours, will be an exhibition mixed doubles match in which Miss Marble will team with Barry Ryan, 1954 Sunset League Singles finalist, to oppose Jean Williams and Floyd Baker, winners of the 1954 Anaheim Mixed Doubles title. Miss Marble, who was voted one of the 10 outstanding women in the world in 1939, has not come by her plaudits without overcoming many obstacles. The fourth of five children in a relatively poor family at the age of 20 she was a lumpy, awkward 175 pounder, pronounced tubercular and doomed to a life of semi-invalidism. At the end of six brief years, however, she was tennis champion of the world, one of America's ten best dressed women, one of the 10 women to make Who's Who—and in the same year had won all six major world tennis championships, a feat which has never been duplicated. Since that time her versatility has been expressed in many fields. She has written an autobiography, "The Road to Wimoledon," is a regular columnist on "The Racquet", has had honorary journalistic degrees conferred upon her by three universities, was the fea- EIGHT TEAMS OPEN PLAY IN SUMMER BASKETBALL LEAGUE Eight teams will swing into action in the Anaheim Summer Basketball League at the Anaheim High gym tonight. "Santee has the best possibilities," said the 21-year old Aussie agricultural student who slashed 1.4 seconds off the world record held for less than two months by England's Roger Bannister, the original four-minute miller. Landy chuckled at the suggestion that his new record might prove unbeatable for a long time, and said, "It's not impossible to run even faster than I did yesterday." "I don't think I'll be able to do it myself within the next few weeks," he explained. "I've had five hard races in the last three weeks, and I need a rest. I'm scheduled to run in two more races over here before July 1, at Gaevle and Gothenburg, and then I'll rest up for my meeting with Bannister in the British Empire games." Empire To Open July 30 The Empire games will be held at Vancouver, Canada, July 30-Aug.7 and the long-awaited finals of the mile run in that big meet, with Bannister and Landy meeting at last, is scheduled for the final day. In London, trail-blazer Bannister said he also is pointing his training for the Empire games race and said "I can hardly wait to run against Landy." "My work at the hospital doesn't leave time for proper training." NEW RECORD MILE — John Landy of Australia has set a new world record in the mile run. The Empire games will be held at Vancouver, Canada, July 30-Aug. 7 and the long-awaited finals of the mile run in that big meet, with Bannister and Landy meeting at last, is scheduled for the final day. In London, trail-blazer Bannister said he also is pointing his training for the Empire games race and said "I can hardly wait to run against Landy." "My work at the hospital doesn't leave time for proper training," said Bannister, who is a medical student. "But I certainly intend to be in shape to meet Landy next month. Vancouver, I suspect, will be my first opportunity to shoot for new time, even though the clock won't be the main thing in the Empire games." Landy disclosed that he is considering an offer of a teaching position in Britain for two years, which would permit him to continue running, but that, according to his present plans, "I'm going to wind up my running this year." Says He'll Quit The lanky Aussie said he would quit "because any reasonable person will understand you cannot go on like this. It's too hard. I'm not keen on the idea of continuing running." For the first 700 meters Landy followed a blazing pace set by Erkki Kallia of Finland, and then he took over to lead the rest of the way "because I knew this was the time to go all out, and I knew it was up to me alone." Chris Chataway, the same British runner who paced and drove Bannister to his record performance, clung to Landy's heels until the final burst and finished 40 yards behind in 4:04.4. En route to the mile record, Landy also eclipsed the 1,500-meter record of 3:43, held by Gundar Haeff and Lennart Strand of Sweden and Werner Luegg of Germany, by clocking 3:41.8. BULLETIN — 7 All-Stars Rally in 9th To Down Hollywood HOLLYWOOD (UP)—A last inning scoring spurt which resulted in six runs was credited today for the 11 to 7 victory by the Pacific Coast League All-Stars over the league leading Hollywood Stras. A crowd of 5964 fans saw the All-Stars, comprised of players from seven other PCL teams, make a surprising comeback in the final frame to come out on top of last night's 12th annual All-Star game. Hollywood held the edge throughout the game until the decisive ninth when the All-Stars whipped across six runs to overcome a Hollywood lead of 6 to 5. With bases loaded in the ninth and none out, Portland's Frank Austin singled over short infield to drive in San Francisco's Reno Cheso and even up the score. Then Harry Elliott, the San Diego scooter, rapped a two-run single into right field. Walt Judnich, Portland's howitzer, drove the ball over the right field fence for the other runs. Sacramento's Chet Johnson was credited with the victory. Nippy Jones of Sacramento slammed a bases empty homer in the second round and Seattle's Ray Orteig connected with one aboard in the seventh. All told, the All-Stars collected a dozen hits off Hollywood's Lino Donosa, Jim Walsh, Fred Storbel and Forrest Main. SPORTS BOB ZIMMER, Editor Durocher Predicts that National Loop Pennant Winner Must Win 100 Games By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Manager Leo Durocher of the streaking New York Giants predicted today that "it will take 100 victories to win the National League pennant this year." "Just mark it down," Durocher barked following the Giants' 8-5 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals Monday; "It's gonna take 100 victories to win this thing—there's a long road ahead." Durocher indicated he visualized a two-team struggle between the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers with pre-season contenders like the Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Braves wilting under the pressure. All three have sagged during the last month while the Giants and Dodgers have traveled better-than-.700 clips. Starting on May 21, the Giants have reeled off 24 victories in 30 games for an amazing .800 percentage while the Dodgers have hung on doggedly with 22 wins in 31 games for .710. During the same period, the Braves have a 15-14 record for .517, the Phillies sloughed off to 13-15 for .463 and the Cardinals virtually collapsed with 11-18 for .379. Had 105 Last Year The Dodgers won the pennant last year with 105 victories but they "needed" only 93 of 'em and no National League team had previously won 100 games since 1944. In fact, only 16 pennant winners have won 100 games. Willie Mays and Jim Hearn were the heroes of Monday's triumph. Hearn handled Cardinal slugger Stan Musial like a .215 hitter, retiring him three consecutive times to break up Cardinal rallies and leave five runners stranded. Hearn forced Musial to hit into a double play with two runners on to close the first inning and retired him on outfield files with two Cardinals on base in both the third and fifth innings.
