Editor Littler Leads Old Master of Fairways Into Final Two Rounds of U.S. Open By STEVE SNIDER SPRINGFIELD, N. J. (UP) — Sandy-haired Gene Littler of Palm Springs, Calif., a 23-year old fledgling pro who quit the amateur ranks only five months ago, led the old masters of the fairways into the final two rounds of the U.S. Open golf championship with a two-stroke margin on the field. Winner of the U.S. amateur crown last fall, Littler is an ice-nerved youngster with a pressure-tested game but hard at his heels as the third round opened were defending champion Ben Hogan in grim pursuit of his fifth Open title and the veteran Ed Furgol of Clayton, Mo. Littler calmly put together rounds of 70-69—139 on the first two days at tough old Baltusrol—one under par for the distance. Hogan, one over par with 71 on opening day, came back with a par 70 Friday for a total of 141 and Furgol matched him exactly. But Bantam Ben appeared tired as he tried to shake some birdies out of his war-clubs and admitted: "I can't take too many days like these." Others in threatening position at 143 were former Open champions Lloyd Mangrum of Niles, Ill. (1946) and Cary Middlecoff of Memphis (1949), Dick Mayer of St. Petersburg, Fla., and young Al Mengert of Mamaroneck, N. Y. Four others, including amateur Dick Chapman of Pinehurst, N.C., whose second round 67 was the best round of the tournament to of Houston, Tex., Bobby Locke of In this group were Tommy Bolt date, were five shots back at 144. In yesterday's round of eight, Miss Lenain defeated Donna Crizen of San Bernardino in an easy match 6-1, 6-2, after having previously won over Mandy Mandel of Beverly Hills, 6-1, 6-3. Playing in the girls' 15-years-old and under singles, Miss Williams won an uphill battle over Jacky Ball of Alta-dena 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Last week-end she defeated Alice Thie of Monrovia 6-1, 6-3. Both local girls were decided underdogs in today's matches as Miss Lenain opposed Darlene Hard, top-seeded, and ranking United States junior player, while Miss Williams played Lorna Raymond of Covina, who holds a second ranking in Southern California in her division. Brandon plays the winner of an early match between Carl Busch of Paramount and Ivan Turner of Azusa. Brandon last week won a first round default from Ed Ornordorf of Los Angeles, then took an easy win over John Cress of Beverly Hills 6-2, 6-2. On Sunday, the feminine netters head in opposite directions for two of the most important tournaments of the season. The event is one which is eagerly anticipated each year by the many tennis players and fans of the community who welcome her not only as a fine player and critic of the game, but also as a woman of great charm and personality. Many who have met her in previous years took personal pride in the recent television program "This Is Your Life" in which Miss Marble watched the events and personalities of her varied and exciting life reviewed for her and the TV audience. At this time Miss Marble was presented with a brand new automobile in order that she might more fully enjoy the country-wide touring which she does in her effort to promote greater interest in the game which she loves so well. During the local clinic which is presented by the Wilson Sporting Goods Co. through their Anaheim representative, the Bob Williams' Sporting Goods Store, Miss Marble will again ask for volunteers from the audience to demonstrate the various tennis strokes and tennis strategy. Suggestions for improvement are made, and the "tricks of the trade" gained in years of national and international competition are explained by Miss Marble. To cap the afternoon's activities and to emphasize the points which have been made, Miss Marble will team with Barry Ryan, finalist in this year's Sunset League singles championship, in a mixed doubles exhibition against Ployd Baker and Jean Williams, winners of the Anaheim closed mixed doubles title for 1954.
