Jury Split Over Cypress Knifing Case
SANTA ANA, (OCNS) — Whether James Coleman (Jimmy) White 32, of Orange is guilty of assault with a deadly weapon in the alleged knifing of a Bellflower trucker still is undecided in the minds of a jury.
After deliberating seven and one half hours yesterday a jury of seven women and five men was split on a verdict. Superior Judge Raymond Thompson will rule on a retrial at 11 a.m. Friday.
White claimed self defense in the fracas in which Matthew L. Vickstra, 28, reportedly was knifed on side a Cypress Cafe last April.
Dep. Dist. Atty. Dewite Chatton contended White picked the fight. Defense Atty. brought in witness Ferris E. Cook of Bell O'Dens who claimed he saw Vierns and a third man, Leslie Doole beating up on White.

Bradley Speaks on UDF Meeting
Continued from page 1).
What O'Brien, and an ardent of the welfare services, O'-represented the General at the session recalling inclusion of his Navy days in World War II. "I am to you the number one UDF UDF," said O'Brien. "His to keep alive that one 'ISM' manism."
Rural Bradley, in reiterating program of the United Defense stressed the urgency for saying "As national chair-UDF. I am gaining a great standing for the important that are being done by Com-Chests, and United Funds nation.
I believe the best approach to and campaign is a direct one. UDF budget for 1955 — the cost of money required for the agencies to do a minimum job, estimated at $18,500,000. This rural program embodies the aim of the USO, United De-Services, American Social Service Association, United Sea-Service, National Recreation association and the Communist.
We are not actually enlin war we hear the state-that we no longer need to for the services of some UDF agencies. We are liv-a world of uneasy peace. If we are to long we must provide ade-health, welfare and recrea-services for those people that not the 'missing millions.' In reality, constitutes a bar-ainst 'isms' foreign to our life." Bradley concluded.
Woman Describes Man Who Shoplifted Diamond
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — An Orange woman may have provided the description that will lead Santa Ana police to the man who shop-lifted a $4,600 diamond ring from a local jewelry firm Monday. Mrs. Lucille Hailey, 38 Plaza, Orange, gave police a complete description of a man she saw in the jewelry store's show window at the time the amazing theft was made. "I wondered," she told officers, "if the firm had hired such a funny-looking salesman."
Mrs. Hailey gave a complete breakdown on the suspect's features and dress, and Santa Ana police are hoping to have a break in the case as a result of the new information.
Local police were astounded Monday when the jewelry firm reported that an unidentified man had walked into the store, into the shop-window and lifted the valuable 4-carat diamond and mount from the display window. Only a meager description had been given police by a watchmaker on duty at the back of the store.
Shell Explosion Rocks Beach Ammo Depot
SEAL BEACH, (OCNS) — A five-inch naval ammunition shell exploded at the naval ammunition and net depot at Seal Beach yesterday, causing some $10,000 damage. The shell exploded in a specially - constructed building designed to house demolition men while defusing live ammunition. The shell reportedly exploded while the base detonating fuse was being removed.
Damage was caused to the building and to defusing machines on the main floor of the plant.
Two civilian ordinance men, working nearby, were uninjured. Standing near the blast center were E. E. Haury and W. S. Nevis, both from Long Beach. They were reportedly working on the machine next to the one that contained the exploding projectile. The machine was badly damaged, according to reports.
Two other men, working in the room, escaped injury although showered with glass and debris from the explosion.

Spreckles Petitions for Reversal of Conviction
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Wealthy playboy Adolph B. Spreckles II today awaited the State Supreme Court's decision on his appeal that a previous wife - beating conviction against him be overruled.
Spreckels, 42-year-old sugar fortune heir, yesterday petitioned the state's-high court for the reversal. He was ordered to 30 days behind Orange County Jail bars by Superior Judge Robert Gardner.
The often - wed Spreckles was found guilty of beating his wife at that time, pretty actress Kay Williams, in a squabble at Newport Harbor. The hassle occurred Aug. 20, 1953.
