SPORTS PARADE OSCAR FRALEY SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (UP) — Playing golf for a living is a tough racket but, the gypsies of the fairways admit, you can have a lot of laughs in the putting process. Putting, as a matter of fact, gave Lew Worsham one of his biggest chuckles. It happened in 1947, just after Lew had won the coveted U.S. Open at which he is getting ready to take another crack. Fresh from his Open triumph he went to Denver for a tournament and on the first hole hit his approach shot to within eight feet of the pin, which sat at the top of a little rise. Worsham took out his putter but, before he could hit his shot, his caddy said: "Say, Bud, where did you learn to play golf? Don't use a putter—take a wedge and cut it up up there." Fan Speaks Up Lawson Little, who beat Gene Sarazen in a 1940 playoff for the Open title, remembers that round vividly. It was on the fourth hole that a spectator approached him and said: "Mr. Little, do you inhale on your backswing and exhale on your downswing—or vice versa?" Little looked the man squarely in the eye and replied: "Sir, you look to be about 30 years old. If you don't know how to control your breathing by now—you must be dead." Former Masters champion Claude Harmon fondly recalls the time at Ponte Vedra, Fla., when he went out for friendly match with a real duffer. Harmon's tournament bag was ripped and he towed his clubs in one of those white Sunday bags while his hacking friend had one of those tournament monsters. When they opened the ear trunk all the caddies made a rush for the big bag, on the theory its owner was a "hot golfer. Nobody wanted Harmon's bag except a little old man. Harmon Cops Match Harmon shot a 69 nd his friendly rival had a round 115. As they came in, Harmon's caddy chuckled and said: "That was a real smart trick with that bag, Mr. Harmon. You fooled the guy you were playing—and I took those other caddies for $25." Tony Penna grins when he recalls the time he asked his caddy what club to use, and the bag-toter replied: "Mr. Penna, it's a little late if you don't know now." And Jackie Burke gets a rumble over the caddy he asked "what club do I need to get there?" "I don't know, Mr. Burke," said the caddy, "but I got a bet on you—so get there, please." There was the time. too, at Harlingen Tex.; when as Worsham got to the top of his backswing a spectator yelled: "Hold it, hold it." Worsham, startled, stepped back from his ball and the spectator said: "Thank you, I didn't have my camera focused." That, any of the pros will tell you, isn't funny! Come next year, or the year after that, you'll be seeing on other cars some of the styling features you see in Buick today. We expect it. It has happened before. And there is good reason for it — popular appeal. Take, for example, the car model shown here. We call it a Riviera. Most people call it a “hardtop.” When Buick introduced this body type in 1949, it was a completely new thing. And it was an instant hit. Today, Buick “hardtops” outsell all other models in the line. It's the styling America has taken to its heart. So today you find that every major car maker has his own version of this Buick original. (And we can't blame them a bit. They know a good thing when they see it.) Maybe you've noticed other such borrowings from Buick. Cavarretta is still more than a sniffed at the manner in which Dixie Sports Fans Expect Big Things From Little Leon Hardeman in Pro Ball (By BILL FERGUSON) United Press Sports Writer ATLANTA (UP)—Dixie sports fans are looking toward a favorite son to prove that a little man can throw his weight around in professional football. And the coach of the Baltimore Colts agrees that Georgia Tech's Leon Hardeman might be just the man to do it. Hardman, a five-foot, six-inch native of LaFayette, Ga., surely threw his weight around in three years at Georgia Tech, but past performance charts indicate that good little college stars make better insurance salesmen than professional players. Might Be Exception. However, Coach Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank thinks that Hardeman might be an exception, even though he's a little man who plays the game like a big man. While most small football players rely on speed, Hardeman is comparatively slow and does his best work through the hard part of the line. "Hardman has a wonderful sense of balance," said Ewbank. "and that's what makes the boy such a threat. Even though he's not too big, he's hard to bring down. Hardman's balance was the main thing that made him one of the Southeastern Conference's leading ground gainers for three seasons, and many believe that if it had not been for injuries, his balance would have made him an All-American. In addition to balance, Hardman showed Georgia Tech faithfully a fine change-of-pace and tremendous driving power. Although a left halfback, Hardman got many calls when the engineers needed that tough one-yard to the goal line. LEGAL NOTICE Attorney for Plaintiff Wm. P.
