Fledgling Seals Hand 18-13
Pasting to Rickey’s Stars
By SCOTT BAILLE
United Press Sports Writer
SAN FRANCISCO (P) — Branch Rickey's stomach probably looked like the inside of a cigar factory today as the aftermath of an 18-12 thrashing which the San Francisco Seals handed his prized Hollywood farm club last night in the most lopsided game of the Coast League season.
And if things weren't confused enough for the stogie-mangling boss of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the only pitcher able to silence the Bay Area Blasters before Rickey's horrified gaze was infielder Jack Lohrke.
Either the veteran holler guy has been staying under wraps or lived up to his nickname of "Lucky," for he took over in the sixth frame and held the Seals hitless for the rest of the night.
Before that, they had devoured the likes of Red Munger, Junior Walsh and Fred Strobel while sweeping to an 18-4 bulge in five innings.
In other contests, runner-up San Diego chipped the Stars' lead to six games by clipping Seattle 9-6. Los Angeles Dumped Oakland 5-3 and Sacramento bounced last place Portland, 5-1.

In other contests, runner-up San Diego chipped the Stars' lead to six games by clipping Seattle 9-6. Los Angeles jumped Oakland 5-3 and Sacramento bounced last place Portland, 5-1.
Despite their pyrotechnics, the Seals were outhit 18-11 and slowly blew a 15 run lead which began melting seriously when the Stars jammed five runs across in the seventh. But Pappy Bob Munckief put out the blaze for Adrian Zabala and salvaged the Cuban southpaw's eighth triumph.
Munger, who had started for Hollywood, was nicked for his second loss after eight straight wins. Tom Saffel homered with one on for the losers.
Earl Rapp, meanest looking guy in the league, drove in five runs with two round trippers against Seattle to help Bob Kerrigan of the Pads win his eighth of the hectic campaign.
Rapp also belted a two bagger and Harry Elliott, San Diego's league leading swatsmith, biffed a two run homer in the third.
Tommy Byrne, cavorting at first base for the Suds, also hit for the circuit. Bill Evans left early with his second loss.
Angels Win
Charley Dressen shuffled Oakland pitchers like French premiers in the latter stages of the Los Angeles game but all was in vain when the Cherubs' Tom Brown clubbed a two run double off Artie Schallock in the ninth to put Los Angeles ahead 4-3.
Dressen then rushed in Bob Murphy who fed a single to Bruce Edwards to score Brown for the third Angeleno run of the frame. That was enough to sink the Oaks.
Herky-Jerky Bob Spicer went the distance for the Seraphs to earn his seventh win. Hal White who had put the winning runs on the bags before Schallock took over, got the loss. It also put the Oaks behind San Francisco which moved into third.
Sacramento busted a four game losing streak and Marino Chico Pieretti rolled to his 10th triumph of the year while scattering seven Portland hits. Richie Myers crashed a two run homer for the Solons off loser Red Adams, who now has been dunked seven times this year.

NEW YORK — Rocky Marciano and Ezzard Charles broke camp today as fans poured into New York and workmen erected the new $37,000 ring in Yankee Stadium for Thursday night's $500,000 heavy weight title fight.
Champion Marciano, favored at 17-5, packed his gear at Grossinger N.Y., and prepared to fly toward New York by helicopter late today. Charles, at Monticello, N.Y., was slated to motor to Manhattan early tonight.
“If we get a break in the weather, the crowd will exceed 40,000, said promoter Jim Norris. “Reports from air lines, railroads, bus companies and hotels reveal unexpectedly heavy movements because of rapidly increasing interest in the fight.”
Norris and his associates in the International Boxing Club were attempting to assure their own “weather break” by erecting a canopy over the ring so that the fight could go on in event of rain.
A canopy was being used for the first time in New York boxing history because the IBC was taking the biggest weather gamble in ring annals. If the fight could not be staged Thursday night, it would have to be postponed a full week to Thursday, June 24, due to previous commitments for the cables used in theatre-television.
Showers Forecast
The long-range forecast indicated possible showers. But such predictions are extremely unreliable.
When Marciano, 29, and Charles, 32, square off at 10:30 p.m. EDT, there will be no home television. But the scheduled 15-round will be broadcast nationally by ABC.
The odds favoring Rocky had dropped a point from 18-5 to 17-5. But it was still an "even money" bet the Rock would win on a kayo, and it was 5-1 against Ezzard's stopping the champion.
As the two principals broke camp today and prepared to spend tonight in mid-town hotels, Marciano expected to scale about 185 pounds at the weigh-in Thursday noon in Madison Square Garden, Charles planned to register about 189.

GETTING THE THUMB—Wayne Belardi, in his first game with the Tigers after being traded from the Dodgers, is thumbed out at home by Umpire John Stevens. Wayne tried to reach home from second on Harvey Kuenn's single in seventh inning at New York. Outfielder Irv Noren's throw to catcher Yogi Berra cut Belardi down. The Yanks won, 5-1.
First Baptists Conclude First Half With Perfect Record in Church League
The First Baptists continued to set the pace in the "A" Church Softball League, but the Stanton Community Church ran into a stumbling block in the "B" League in games last night.
Arlen Bickham fired a two-hitter as the Baptists closed their first-half slate with a perfect record by drubbing the Grace Lutherans, 10-0, at City Park. Bob Koch and Don Quigley hit home runs for the victors.
Stanton dropped its first game in four starts, succumbing to the three-hit pitching of Don Hamill.

JOHNNY FARRELL
SAYS DARKHORSE
MIGHT UPSET HOGAN
(By STEVE SNIDER)
United Press Sports Writer
SPRINGFIELD, N. J. (P-Dapper Johnny Farrell, who qualifield on two counts for this year's U.S. Open golf championship, predicted today "one of the dark horses" may thwart Ben Hogan's record bid for a fifth National Open crown.
"Ben is feeling well and playing well," said Farrell, who won the Open way back in 1928 and is the home pro at Baltusrol where Hogan bucks a field of 161 challengers in four rounds starting Thursday.
"But Baltusrol is no cinch even for a Hogan and some of these top young pros are likely to be heard from," said Farrell. "Things have changed on the tournament trail in recent years and these young fellows who have been winning a lot of money under pressure can be dangerous when it's just one man against the field."
Emphasizes Toski
Farrell especially emphasized the chances of Bob Toski of Livingston, N. J., the year's leading money winner. Then he grouped in the "field" such stars as Doug Ford and Jackie Burke of Kiamesha Lake, N. Y.; Shelley Mayfield of Seguin, Tex.; and Bob Rosburg of Chicago.
Farrell qualified this year both as one of the old champions and as the home club-pro. Neither factor will be an exemption for him next term when the Open moves to another club and only the last five previous champions will be permitted to skip the sectional trials.
Hogan and most of the others gave Baltusrol another twirl Tuesday with Bantam Ben still maintaining that his 1948 records of 276 could be broken and all others disagreeing violently.

Snead's caddy said Sam "went around in about 70" but Sam denied he did that well. He added, though, his alling neck and back are on the mend.
Bobby Locke of South Africa, the British Open champion, is one who disagree with Ben that 276 or better is possible on Baltusrol's 7,027 yard par 34-36-70.
“This course is too bloomin' long for me,” said Bobby. “Maybe it’s par 70 on the scorecard but I play it as a par 76.”

Deadlock Expected in Legion Circuit
FULLERTON, (OCNS) — From present indications, Fullerton and Anaheim Junior American Legion baseball teams will meet in the North Division's playoffs next week. The first game is tentatively slated for Tuesday evening.
Although Coach Bucky Walter's Cardinals lead the loop by one game over defending champ, Anaheim, the Mother Colony nine has a two-game series with last-place Buena Park this weekend.
Fullerton split with the Anaheim unit, then took two easy ones from the tailenders, winning 19-3 and 10-2. The second game saw Fullerton limit the opposition to a mere single.
The winner of the North Division playoffs will meet the loop winner of the South, which is currently Newport. This week, Fullerton Coaches Walter sand Bill Bryant will be able to get a close view of the Harbor nine, as they meet in a two-game series. The featured affair will be a practice encounter.
At the conclusion of the first four games of the current season, Gerald Runyou, outfielder - pitcher, leads the Crads in the hitting department with a nifty average of .500. He has gone to bat 10 times, banging out five hits.
The all-around ace leads the team in runs scored, as well as in the pitching department. He has worked 11-2-3 innings, faced 38 batters and held the enemy to a mere three hits. He has not given up a run, while striking out eight and walking seven.
Joel Newkirk is second in the number of runs scored, with seven, while hitting at a merry .467 clip.
