Orange County Couple to Dine With Emperor Haile Selassie Tonight SANTA ANA (OCNS)—Two Orange County residents will sit down to a quiet, informal dinner with an old friend tonight, and when they do, they will be the idol of Los Angeles society. The friend is Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. The last time the Orange County couple had dinner with his Imperial Majesty, they ate with solid gold tableware. The couple is Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Christian of 146 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Christian are world travelers and lecturers who went to Ethiopia a few years ago to film it travelogue. "We had a terrible time getting into the country," Mrs. Sylvia Christian told Orange County News Service. "However, my husband was a good friend of Ambassador George Merrill." The Ethiopians have been suspicious of white people ever since the Italians invaded their country. Mrs. Christian points out "however, Mr. Merrill finally made arrangements with the Ethiopian immigration officials and we were allowed to enter." "We told the Emporer we wanted to photograph the country and the people for lecture tours. At first he seemed reluctant, but after we mentioned the film would be shown in schools, he offered us all kinds of help. He's a great believer in education and is trying desperately to increase the scholastic system in his country." Has Own Plane From then on their trip was a magic carpet of beauty. "The Emperor flew us in his private plane to the interior," says Mr. Christian. "We were the first persons to photograph the first bridge even to span the blue Nile." On a two-week safari to photograph the Golden Ethiopian lions, the Emperor sent along his personal guides. "There were lots of flies and vicious wild bears, but the twin contortions, but they never miss a note." Has Simple Tastes The Emperor called out the royal symphony orchestra and the royal ballet to perform before the Orange County couple. "We don't want people to get the idea the Emperor is living lavishly," Mrs. Christian adds. "He's a man of very simple tastes. Most of the ornate dinnerware has been handed down through generations and the symphony and ballet are public institutions." The couple had visited 35 countries during their years of travel throughout the world. "We moved to Orange County three years ago," Mrs. Christian says, "and having been around the world so many times, we know that this county is the most beautiful spot on earth." The couple will present their film and lecture at the Los Angeles Ebell theatre on Friday evening—the night after the Emperor leaves Los Angeles. "It will be nice to see His Excellency again," Mrs. Christian says. "We will be able to tell him what the reaction to our pictures has been in the nation's schools. And also, we're going to present him with a copy of our film." There's no question but the Christians are looking forward to the informal dinner tonight with as much enthusiasm as they look forward to again eating with gold tableware. Mr. Christian says. "The guides protected us from the lions long enough for us to photograph them." On their return to Addis Ababa, the capitol city, the Emperor invited the Christians to a farewell banquet attended by the Empress, his sons, daughters and grandchildren. "It was something out of a dream," Mrs. Christian says. "We ate from priceless porcelain dishes, listened to the royal flute players and watched as huge trays of food were placed on the table." Mrs. Christian explains that the royal flute players are unique to Ethiopia. "They play their flutes while standing on their heads, jumping up and down and going through it will be nice to see His Excellency again." Mrs. Christian says. The firm had sought to move its operations here from Los Angeles. After extensive hearings, councillors turned down the plan, principally on grounds of air pollution resulting from paint and varnish fumes. No Shirt Like Arrow REMEMBER FATHER'S DAY ANAHEIM Swan Warm Welcome Given California's 40th Division on Return to U.S. SAN FRANCISCO — California's own 40th Infantry Division returned home from Korea today with its flags bearing four new battle streamers to add to those earned in World War I and World War II. The 1100 officers and men of the division received a warm welcome when their Navy transport, General Wiegel, docked at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Fire boats shot a canopy of spray high in the air as the Weigel approached Pier 3. A band was playing on the deck of a ferryboat that circled the vessel, and Air Force and Navy planes zoomed overhead. First off the transport was division commander, Brig. Gen. W. J. Bradley, who was greeted by Lt. Gen. Willard G. Wyman, commander of the Sixth Army, and Brig. Gen., Ralph I. Glascow, port of embarkation commander. While the 40th Division consisted basically of California men when it went overseas in March 1951, practically every state was represented in the contingent on the Weigel. Death on the battlefield, injury and illness, and the Army rotation system accounted for complete replacement of its original personnel assembled for the Korean fighting. The 40th Division has seen overseas service three times since it was organized on July 19, 1917. It fought in France at the close of World War I, and saw action at Guadalcanal and in the Philippines during World War II. It was returned to state control on April 7, 1946, after doing occupation duty in Korea. It was called to service again in 1950, a few weeks after the Communists invaded South Korea. it costs so little to call long distance typical rates from Anaheim San Francisco $1.25 plus tax Fresno 1.00 plus tax little to call long distance typical rates from Anaheim San Francisco $1.25 plus tax Fresno 1.00 plus tax Bakersfield .75 plus tax San Diego .65 plus tax First 3 minutes—day "station" call.
