Seek Industrial Zone Near County Airport
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Helping clear the way for a giant industrial development near Orange County Airport, the Orange County Planning Commission has sent a zoning change recommendation to the Board of Supervisors for approval.
Commission has okayed zoning switch for a 660 foot deep strip adjoining Acadia St. on the Easterly side of the airport and extending from Palisades Rd., to McArthur Blvd., it was announced.
Area formerly was zoned for general agriculture. It will be zoned M-1, large industrial, and NC-2, general commercial, if supervisors pass the ordinance.
The Irvine Company requested the change. Airport is expected to be enlarged in the not-too-distant future; it was revealed Planning commission gave no cost figures in the rezoning.

Harriman Claims Red Cross Won’t Refuse Areas Aid
LOS ANGELES — National Chairman E. Roland Harriman says the American Red Cross never will —fuse to help disaster-stricken communities — including those which fall to pay back funds spent by the relief group.
Harriman voiced his reassurance last night in amplification to his speech at the opening of the National Red Cross convention in which he charged some cities with shirking their financial obligations to his organization.
In his speech, Harriman had contended that several cities which accepted nationwide disaster aid did not reimburse the Red Cross although they solicited and collected funds because of the disaster.
A Red Cross spokesman said Harriman’s statement last night was a reply to any hints the organization might refuse to help cities he accused of not living up to their financial obligations to the Red Cross.

John L. Shirer of the U. of Arizona Bureau of Business search said there is an opposition by voters to public issues for industrial plant structure.
This opposition, he said, from fear induced by pastrant abuses” of the bond and belief that municipal would lose their tax exemption.
C. O. Brandt, manager of Municipal Airport Industrial trust at Chico, Calif., explained how construction of an brought business to his town.
The field, he said, was owed by the Air Force during War II, but the responsible maintenance was suddenly ed in the laps of Chico tax in 1945.

Brandt said city officials were the townspeople would not for the upkeep costs, and it later organized the field for merical transportation purpose.
Now, he said, the areas surrounding the field have been turned to one of the most complex

In his speech, Harriman had contended that several cities which accepted nationwide disaster alide did not reimburse the Red Cross although they solicited and collected funds because of the disaster.
A Red Cross spokesman said Harriman's statement last night was a reply to any hints the organization might refuse to help cities he accused of not living up to their financial obligations to the Red Cross.
Harriman said it was the nationally - accepted custom for the Red Cross to conduct a special fund campaign in time of disaster prior to World War II, but that due to a surplus accumulated during the war, no such campaigns were conducted until 1951.
"Since 1951 the nation has suffered several major disasters nad it became necessary for the Red Cross to return to the traditional and democratic custom of neighbor helping neighbor, community helping community by special contributions," he said.
"The Red Cross can not continue to ask the American people to deprive themselves for the basic needs of a disaster - stricken community while the community itself contributes very little to the Red Cross for these purposes.
"In some of these communities ... disaster funds have been raised by other organizations and held until the Red Cross finished the job of meeting basic needs of the victims. These outside funds were then used to replace the total disaster losses... with no consideration given to the individual's resources or his ability to help himself."

Day caucus ended yesterday. Planning experts explained how private and public facilities have been developed in various towns to meet the demanding needs of industry.
Other topics of discussion were the effort of taxes on industrial sites and how some communities developed airports to stimulate industrial growth.
Bond Issues Opposed
John L. Shirer of the University of Arizona Bureau of Business Research said there is an increasing position by voters to public bond issues for industrial plant construction.
This opposition, he said, came from fear induced by past "flagrant abuses" of the bond device and belief that municipal bonds would lose their tax exempt status.
C. O. Brandt, manager of the municipal Airport Industrial District at Chico, Calif., explained new construction of an airport bought business to his town.

Susan Hayward Collapses at Divorce Trial
By ALINE MOSBY
United Press Staff Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD — Susan Hayward's stormy divorce trial took a day's recess today after she collapsed from the strain of charging husband Jess Barker with wanting to share her money and refusing to work.
The contested hearing was halted in Burbank superior court after the afternoon recess yesterday when Miss Hayward stretched out on a couch in the jury room.
"This has been a terrible ordeal," she said.
Lawyer Martin Gang told the court she had an "upset stomach" and could not return to the witness stand until court resumes Thursday.
Barker's side yesterday tried to damage her grounds for divorce that Barker caused her mental and physical suffering when he spanked her and tossed her nude into the family swimming pool.
A next door maid had testified she observed the marital bottle in the Barker back yard from her own back door. But Miss Hayward admitted under cross examination only the side yard of the Barker home was visible to the neighbors.
She laso said she wore a full-length terry cloth robe during part of the alleged chase.
The pale, nervous film star sat with downcast eyes while her attorneys read a deposition Barkef gave them last December. In the paper they told him the marriage filed because "she became the bread winner while you stayed home to take care of the children."
In the deposition Barker admitted they both went to a marriage counselor and the doctor advised him to go to work.
"I told the doctor one difficulty was she had gotten farther ahead than I, she had become a star."

"I told the doctor one difficulty was she had gotten farther ahead than I, she had become a star," the deposition quoted the tall actor as saying.
The deposition showed Barker worked most of 1945 and 1946 but was employed only a few weeks in 1944, 1947 and 1948. She paid most of the bills.
Testimony revealed Miss Hayward wanted her husband to have his separate checking account "so he would feel like the head of the family." She gave him money at Christmas and once loaned him $1000, the deposition said.
"I told Mrs. Barker of my embarrassment of bills coming in my name and being paid in her name," Barker said in the deposition. "The subject of a joint checking account came up and she said she'd think about it."
