Grover Fans 18 as Legion Sweeps G. Grove Series
Anaheim's Junior Legion horsehiders warmed up for next weekend's Southern Division series with Buena Park by belting Garden Grove twice over the weekend.
Yesterday, Southpaw Paul Grover fanned 18 batters while hurling a superb three-hitter as the locals chalked up a 6-1 triumph. Grover retired the side on strikes four times and walked only four batters.
Saturday, Rudy Peralta settled down after a shaky start to pitch the Anaheimers to a 7-4 victory. Peralta yielded one run and three hits in the first and limited Garden Grove to the same number of blows in the next six frames before Bob Scholz took over in the eighth.
Grover was backed up by a 13-hit attack yesterday, which included three hits each by Al Storey and Joe Avitia and two apiece by Rich Blankmeyer, Frank Doretti and Grover.
Storey, Avitia and Doretti singled to bring across a pair of Anaheim runs in the fourth and Blankmeyer singled home two in the seventh.
Anaheim spread out its run-producing Saturday with two in the second, single markers in the fourth and sixth, two in the eighth fore Bob Scholz took ocer in the Max Pickering smacked a two-run homer for Garden Grove off Schols in the eighth.

Local Netters Reach Quarter-Final Round of Arcadia Park Championship
Karen Lenain, Jean Williams, and Ronald Brandon of Anaheim reached the quarter-final round of their respective divisions in the first weekend of play in the sixth annual Arcadia County Park Tennis Championship.
Miss Lenain played some very sharp tennis to defeat Mandy Mandel of Beverly Hills 6-1, 6-3, while Miss Williams was winning over Alice Thie of Monrovia by the same score.
Miss Lenain and Miss Williams both return to the Arcadia Park courts at 10 a.m. next Friday morning for the quarter-final rounds,
group composed of high school boys. Otta and Ryan were awarded a United State Tennis Handbook and tennis balls as first-place winners, with the losers receiving practice balls.
Local players have been invited to participate in the summer schedule of matches which will be held every Monday from 9:30 to 12:30 as well as in a sectional Junior Wightman Cup playoff for girls in July. In the Wightman matches, feminine netters will oppose nationally ranked junior girls in practice matches which are designed to ready the national stars as replace-

Brandon, playing in the veteran's singles, won a default over Ed Orndorff of Los Angeles in the first round and defeated John Cress of Beverly Hills, 6-2, 6-2 in an easy second round. On Saturday he will play the winner of a match between Carl Busch of Paramount and Ivan Turner of Azusa.
On Saturday the Anaheim Recreation Department sponsored a group of ten youngsters who joined sixty other prospective champions from the Southland area at the regular semi-monthly practice session held at the Los Angeles Tennis Club. The event is one in a series staged by the patrons of the Southern California Tennis Association to encourage junior tennis.
Those attending from Anaheim were Cathy Rainey, Lou Ann Peterson, Barry Ryan, Bill Otta, Ken and Phil Fenton, Steve Morris, Lynn Oden, Gayle Simmons and Johnny Heiden. Play was limited to double since the huge crowd of youngsters wanting to play, added to the Japanese Davis Cup team which is making the club their headquarters for 10 days, as well as adults in attendance for the professional matches sponsored by Jack Kramer, taxed the capacity of the 17 courts to the bursting point.
Junior players took a great deal of interest in the photographing of the Japanese team for metropolitan papers as well as in the play-nig done by the team to get them in shape for their round against Mexico at Mexico City early in July.
In the round robin doubles which was played Barry Ryan and Bill Otta, winner of their group, took the deciding-match from another Anaheim team, Gayle Simmons and Phil Fenton winners in a second

Shelton Gets Two More Cracks at High Jump Record
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UP) — Ernie Shelton of Southern California, who barely missed the legendary seven-foot high jump in the NCAA track and field championships, gets two more cracks at the world record this week.
Shelton nudged the crossbar loose on three attempts at seven feet in the NCAA finals Saturday at the University of Michigan after winning the high jump event with a leap of 6 feet,10¼ inches to aid Southern California to its sixth straight collegiate team crown.
The nimble Shelton will try again for the elusive seven-foot jump Tuesday in the Big Ten-Pacific Coast meet at Northwestern U., and then moves to St. Louis for the National AAU championships Friday and Saturday.
Southern California easily defended the NCAA team title in a meet which saw no records shattered. Illinois was second, California third, Texas fourth and Michigan fifth.
Jim Lea, Southern Cal's only other winner, successfully defended his 440-yard dash crown in:46.7.
Illinois, collected valuable points with victories by Willie Williams, Joe Corley and Willard Thomson, Williams, the defending champion, sped the 100-yard dash in:09.5. Corley was clocked at:22.6 in the 220-yard low hurdles and Thomson won the 120-yard high hurdles in:14.2.
John Bennett of Marquette was the third defending champion to retain a title. His leap of 25 feet,10¼ inches was the best effort in the broad jump and the best mark recorded this year.
SPORTS PARADE
OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK (UP) — Ezzard Charles had better lay off training today and dash out to bet everything right down to his bull fiddle that come Thursday night he will be the first man in ring history to regain the heavyweight championship of the world.
He's a cinch. Because Fearless Fraley is picking Rocky Marciano to lay him motionlessly horizontal along about the 13th round of their impending title bout.
That's the surest kiss of death known to the sporting world.
But frankly I can't see any other ending to this embroglio than Ezzard prone on a field of Yankee Stadium canvas. This is a business where there is a much-proved two-edged adage—always go with the champion and take the guy with the rockabye punch.
In that latter department even an idiot, and I thank you, would have to take the Brockton Block-buster over the part-time adagio dancer from Cincinnati. If this was to be, or happens to be, a waltz, then the fast-stepping Ezzard would have a remarkable chance.
Rocky Boomed Walcott
But while Rocky usually looks like a water buffalo in leg irons, he swings in a rotndhouse manner which covers nearly half of the ring. A very able old waltz master out of Camden, N.J., named Jersey Joe-Walcott, blocked those ponderous punches for 13 rounds a couple of years back and looked like a sure winner.
Then — boom!
The reason is that those lumbering punches gradually wear down the opposition until the arms just won't come up any more. As sure as that happens the fight is over. This seems to be proved rather conclusively by the Marciano record of 45 straight professional victories—and 40 knockouts.
Meanwhile, what about Ezzard's punch power? It long has been bouts, which is a fine record. He also has scored 53 knockouts.
It is to be doubted, however, that he has the steam necessary to deposit Marciano on the deck. The Rock has shown quite convincingly that he is the kind of a guy who, if you hit him with a hatchet, will break the blade.
The worst rap against Marciano is that he has fought only 12 rounds in two years since he won the title. The first was his two minutes and 25 second return match "victory" against the reluctant Walcott. The second was an 11-round clobbering of Roland LaStarza. But getting ready for Charles, Rocky has boxed 200 rounds or more rounds than he has fought in his entire pro career. He'll be ready.
Charles is trying to break an old jinx against former champions who have tried to regain the crown.
Those who failed included Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Jeffries, Jack Dempsey, Max Schmeling, Joe Louis, Walcott and Charles himself, who had a chance against Walcott. Personally I don't think Ezzard is as good as any of them—not even the "old" Charles.
Gonzales Cops Pro Title By Whipping Segura
LOS ANGELES (UP) — Richard Pancho) Gonzales won the U. S. Professional Tennis championship yesterday by defeating defending titleholder Pancho Segur, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Gonzales employed a stronger service and brilliant overhand smashes in gaining the pro crown and its accompanying purse of $1,500.
Joe Corley and Willard Thomson Williams, the defending champion, sped the 100-yard dash in :09.5. Corley was clocked at :22.6 in the 220-yard low hurdles and Thomson won the 120-yard high hurdles in :14.2.
John Bennett of Marquette was the third defending champion to retain a title. His leap of 25 feet, 10¼ inches was the best effort in the broad jump and the best mark recorded this year.

Meanwhile, what about Ezzard's punching power? It long has been said that a boxer would cut Marciano to ribbons, keep him off balance and take the sting out of him. Strangely, though, no one has been able to accomplish this maneuver to date.
