China Guerrillas Now Battle Reds In Manchuria By WILLIAM MILLER United Press Staff Correspondent TAIPEH, Formosa (UP)—The guerrilla movement against the Chinese Communists is reported to have spread to the forests of Manchuria. Guerrillas have been active against the Reds ever since the withdrawal of the Chinese Nationalist government to this island in 1949. The Nationalists say that these guerrillas will rise in mass if Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek attacks the Red-held mainland. The guerrilla movement is strong in southern and central China. Now, Nationalist intelligence sources say, several thousand guerrilla deserters from the Chinese Communist and North Korean armies are operating in Manchuria. Supplies Threatened Based on forest hideouts, they are in position to sabotage the Chinese Red supply line to Soviet Russia. Intelligence sources put the total number of guerrillas as high as 500,000. Some other sources say that figure is too high. But the Reds themselves admit occasionally that guerrillas are active. These admissions are made in the from of dispatches in Communist newspapers reporting that revolts by "Kuomintang elements" have been put down or that some "kuomintang agents" have been executed. Chiang Ching-Kuo elder Retail Coffee Prices Cut in Rio de Janeiro RIO DE JANEIRO (UP)—A government order has cut domestic retail coffee prices 10 cents a pound to about $1.20. An eight per cent reduction, ordered by the Federal Price Sabilization Agency, went into effect yesterday. Washington Host To SPEBSQA By ROBERT J. SERLING United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON (UP)—Washington is playin ghost to some 4000 delegates of the SPEBSQA. Those initials stand for the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. The society is holding its annual convention and contests. This event has been going on for 16 years and with increasing popularity. Society membership has jumped from an original 26 to 25,000. Constitution Hall, where the 1954 contest is being held, has been sold out since last January. And certain critics who used to say that a bunch of barbershop quartets couldn't fill a phone booth with customers, are now eating their typewriters. Close Touch Chiang Ching-Kuo is head of the Nationalist political department. In that capacity he is in close touch with guerrilla activities. The Nationalists exert loose control over the guerrillas, and receive reports about them, from their innumerable secret agents on the mainland. Unofficially, the Nationalists say that 190,000 guerrillas are operating in Szechwan province in western China. They report strong forces active in Yunnan, Kweichow and Kwangtung provinces in the southwest and south. The Reds recently reported breaking up guerrilla bands in Kwangtung and in Hunan north of it. Guerrillas also are harassing the Reds along the coast. They are in touch with the Nationalist government and have proved a valuable source of intelligence. The latest report is that when the Chinese Nationalists who fled into Burma were evacuated to Formosa recently by air lift, some of them remained behind and made their way into southwest China to operate as guerrillas. Top Japanese Red Expelled From Party TOKYO (UP)—One of the top leaders of the Japanese Communist party who went "underground" after being purged in 1950 under occupation directives has been expelled from the party as a "deviationist," it was reported today. Kyodo News Agency said that "inside information" from security officials disclosed that Shigeo And certain critics who used to say that a bunch of barbershop quartets couldn't fill a phone booth with customers, are now eating their typewriters. Grew Fast The darn fools wound up organizing the SPEBSQSA and now it has some 2000 quartets, 400 choruses and an international headquarters in Detroit. The society has a fancy definition of what is barbershop harmony—"Tone adjustment by acute ear sense." Freely translated, this means you take four male voices—one to sing the melody, one tenor, one baritone and one bass—and you blend them to produce a pleasing harmony. A true barbershop quartet scorns any accompaniment. "If you've ever sung 'Sweet Adeline' or 'Down By The Old Mill Stream,' you've been engaging, more or less, in barbershop harmony. You have, according to the society, indulged in "Vocal harmony dictated and measures by the true or pure diatonic scale, the note intervals of which are fixed absolutely by the physical laws of harmonic sounds, as distinguished from four-part harmony as measured by the tempered music scale." That means you stayed in tune pretty good. SPEDSQSA members may be real barbers, but only if they can sing. One wave gives bearing. The other gives distance from the sending station. Joseph C. Hromada, technical assistant at the CAA center, said the computer was developed in 1950 but is in use on only about a dozen planes and is still in the testing and evaluation stage. It cannot go into widespread use until more distance-measuring rare working on a fourth. The latest version substitutes an ill-three variations and researchers dio stations are built. The computer has gone through miniatured screen for the cardboard map and line-drawing indicator. A ground map of the area over which the plane is flying is projected on the screen. The plane's location is shown by the shadow of a miniature plane which moves and changes direction exactly as the real plane does. If applied to an automobile, this computer would show a motorist a miniature of his own car traveling along a marked highway map. If the miniature car veered off the proper route, the driver would know he had made a wrong turn at the last intersection. The previous record was 1,250,000 bales in 1951. Cotton is Mexico's most important dollar - earning export. It brought in about 120 million dollars last year. Commentator's Parents Settle Support Suit LOS ANGELES (UP)—Radio commentator Fleetwood Lawton's parents have settled a support suit against Lawton with an agreement to accept $100 per month from him. Attorneys for Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Lawton, 73, and his wife, Alma, 65, said the amount corresponded to the temporary support ordered by a court last September when the suit was filed. The couple originally asked $275 a month. There's No Substitute for Paid Circulation. New 'Saratoga' Being Built NEW YORK (UP)—Right in the middle of this amazing town, where the spectacular is commonplace, they're building the world's most powerful aircraft carrier, a giant which if turned on end would rise above most of New York's towering skyline.
