Women carrie lou sutherland ~ editor Mother Groom, North Zeyn St. Neighbors, Grows Huge Beet in Small Backyard Garden Plot North Zeyn Street families have one friend whom they will never forget. Mrs. Elizabeth Groom, 82-year-old, smiling, happy and reluctant to load her troubles on the shoulders of others, is a real neighbor, one who knows her way to the back or front doors of those who live within the area of her home at 614 North Zeyn St. Because of experience in simple, friendly living, and gardening, she is able to tell the enthusiastic gardener what is wrong with her rose, how to get rid of the bugs, when a little fertilizer will do some good, and when the time of the moon is right for planting certain vegetables and other plants. She, too, knows excellent remedies for aches and pains, and sometimes a near-broken heart. 'Has Green Thumb' "Green thumb" of Mother Groom, as she is called, really paid off. Excitedly she rushed down the street the other day exhibiting a huge red beet, one which the neighbors say pushes nearly 20 inches in circumference. She proudly showed it to her friends, among them Dr. Charles and Dorothea Schutz and the R. J. Harveys. Photos of Mrs. Groom, with her prize beet, were in order, but being modest she said "no" until her neighbor posed her with choice MRS. ELIZABETH GROOM ... Zeyn Street 'Mother' ber of the Zion Lutheran church for many years and has been very active in the Ladies Aid of Pre-Prom Party Set At Brooks' Home Saturday Night Among the parties to precede the Junior Senior Prom for Anaheim High School students, slated Saturday night at the Santa Ana Country club, is the coketail party to be hostessed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Brooks and their son, John, a senior at AUHS. Hillview Road, West Anaheim. The spacious home will be in full dress for this formal event, which is one of the many planned in the final days of social whirl for the Anaheim High School campus. Assisting in hosting will Elizabeth Bellimore. Mary Conn Pat Locker, Yvonne Fliz. Mary Lo Casebeer, Lois Hackins. Dian Gruenemay, Maryann Hammett. Library Chats by MARTHA METTLER One of the nice things we look forward to in the Anaheim Library is the weekly visit of Miss Yetta Alden. Every week without fail she makes a careful selection of books to take to the shut-ins and the ill. Such volunteer service in the finest tradition of giving helping hand to our neighbors. New Books "The Techniques of Creative Thinking", by R. P. Crawford, in a book that will show you how to put your imagination to work and how to use your ideas to achieve success. "Lucerezia Borgia", by Joan Haslip, is a new study of this famous woman who was born in 1480. In this book the author combines readability with superb scholarship. Any book about Lucerezia must also be about her brother and father—a fascinating record of a brilliant and ruthless family. "The Remarkable Mr. Penny packer", by Liam C'Brien, is a one critic says, a warm-hearted old fashioned armadillo. "Green thumb" of Mother Groom, as she is called, really paid off. Groom, with her prize beet, were in order, but being modest she said "no" until her neighbor posed her with choice flowers in her garden. Her beet was grown on a very small garden plot in the backyard of her home. Modestly, Mrs. Groom replied to the question — How did you get such a large beet — "I don't know. I just did what any person would do to have a good garden." She must have been right, for her vegetables, when prepared the Groom way, are as tasty a dish as any that graces the "Royal Table" and her flowers are prize winners. Mrs. Groom, who has been a resident of Anaheim for many years, coming here from Belleville, Ill., never "lets a friend down" when she is needed, claim the long-time residents of North Zeyn Street. She has been seen many a time huffrying down the street with some choice cookies or some other food, under a spotless napkin, headed for a friend's home, bent on bringing cheer to the family in this manner. Her daughter, Mrs. Frank (Olivia) Smith of Los Angeles, is the "apple of her eye." Sharing that spot, however, are her grandchild and great grandchild, Olivia and her family have a grand time when they come down down ti grandma's for a visit. Mother Groom has been a mem- ber of the Zion Lutheran church for many years and has been very active in the Ladies Aid of that church. She says, "I'm too old to do all that hard work in the Aid now," but ask her "what is doing in the Aid" and she can tell you. Mrs. Groom at 82 years definitely has a wonderful time living. Editor's Note — This story was written by Carrie Lou Sutherland, a former neighbor, who knew Mother Groom.
