New Travel Aids Help U.S. Women By ELIABETH TOOMEY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK (UP) — Everything possible is being done now to make American women not only the most traveled women, in the world, but also the best travelers. There are scientific suitcase packing plans and volumes on proper conduct in crossing borders or striking up conversations with strangers. Step-by-step guide books encourage the timid and pay-as-you-go travel plans bolster the financially weak. The stereotyped picture of a woman traveling alone, her suit cases bulging with more clothes than she needs and her brow creased with confusion over the proper tip to the porter, is fast becoming outdated. "Women have a tendency to pack more than they need," one travel advisor said, "but they're getting much better about it. They've learned from experience and from reading repeated advice to 'travel light.'" Travel Books Help A typical travel wardrobe booklet, now available at several sources including major airlines and one major oil company, tells women what to put in their suitcases and in what order. Thousands of women take trips abroad every summer, traveling in groups, with their husbands and alone. The newest travel books are aimed at these vacationers. Advice from experts seems inexhaustible, including where a love woman can go unescorted and how to avoid bores while traveling. Decide why you're making the trip in the first place, writes the author of one of the newest travel books, "At Home Abroad", by Alice-Leone Moats. If historic sights bore you, plan to go to a foreign country instead. Claim Red Menace in Latin America Serious LOS ANGELES (UP) — The "Communist menace in Latin America is very serious," and "there is no question that Red leaders in Guatemala are taking orders from Soviet Russia," according to Rep Pat Hillings. The California Republican, a member of the House committee on Communist aggression, voiced his warning Saturday upon his return here from an eight-day tour of Central America. Hillings said the Guatemalan government is "very hostile" toward the United States and that President Jacobo Arbenz "may not be a Communist, but he'll do until one comes along." The recent shipment of arms from Poland to Guatemala included 106 carloads of rifles, machine guns, ammunition and howitzer type weapons, the congressman said. "There is a strong feeling in Central America these weapons will be used for purposes other than defense," Hillings stated. Two Carriers Slated To be Demothballed NORFOLK, Va. (UP) — The aircraft carriers Franklin and Bunker Hill will be demothballed to build up the combat-ready anti-submarine fleet, a Navy spokesman said here yesterday. The carrier Bataan, veteran of World War Two and Korea, has been retired to the Pacific reserve force, the spokesman said. Adm. Robert B. Carney, Chief of Naval Operations, said "Most" of the Navy's four battleships will join the mothball fleet as an economy measure. He did not mention any of the ships by name but indicated that three of the big craft would be placed in the reserve fleet. It was reported earlier that the 45,000-ton battleship Missouri, scene of the signing of the Japanese surrender in 1945, would go into mothballs this fall at Bremerton, Wash., after return from the summer midshipman cruise.
