SYNOPSIS
After a long and ardent courtship, Joan Foster and Todd Hunter had set a date for their wedding. It will not be easy to tell frequently on Todd's mother, school-teacher salary, nor to share the manse in New Jersey, with his frail father, the minister, and his gentle though possessive mother. But this simple beginning will mean living their lives together, and that is what they want most of all.
CHAPTER SEVEN
"AND SO," Joan said, "we're going to live over at the manse."
Betty nodded. "Mike and I started our married life that way, too. We had just one room at mother's, not even our own kitchen. Of course, it was home to me, so I didn't really mind. Still, I was glad when we could get an apartment next year."
daughter in our house. All my life I've wished for a daughter and it's wonderful to think we're going to have one—I really think I'll scream."
"She probably will." Betty answered mildly, "because she probably is."
"I know. But those words somehow ring a portentous bell in my ears. Oh, well!" Joan shrugged her faint worry from her. "He's a darling, anyway. Todd's father, I mean. A little on the trail side physically—his heart. But you'd never guess it because he never mentions it. Let's talk about the wedding, though. After all, that's what you came out for. So much to be settled, Betts! I never realized how much."
"Yes, there's plenty." Betty that her happiness had really been given her by Joan.
"It was knowing you and the friendship you gave me that made me into the kind of person Donald could love," she had said.
Poppycock, of course. Just the same. Betty was right. Elaine would certainly get here for the wedding.
Joan continued. "Well, okay. Elaine for one. I could ask Johnny, I suppose. But she feels awkward in long dresses. Betty. You know she never would go to any dance or a thing that was formal at college. She always ducked out. I really don't believe I've ever seen her in anything but a tailored suit or a gym outfit."
Betty nodded.
"So—loan drew a breath—"
CHAPTER SEVEN
"AND SO," Joan said, "we're going to live over at the manse."
Betty nodded. "Mike and I started our married life that way, too. We had just one room at mother's, not even our own kitchen. Of course, it was home to me, so I didn't really mind. Still, I was glad when we could get an apartment the next year."
Betty had come out to spend the day with Joan and talk over plans for the wedding. It was nearly May now and the place nad never been more beautiful. The wisteria was out in full bloom, its fragrance filling the air everywhere. The apple blossoms were pink on the trees and all the azaleas in the garden alongside the porch were in thick bud. Joan wished she were naving her wedding this month, but that would have rushed things a bit. Besides, it was better to wait until Todd finished the term at Columbia, for then they could have a nonymoon of nearly three weeks before he had to start in on his summer work there.
The two girls were sitting on the screened verandan, where Betty's little girl was playing in a small area near them which they had fenced off with chairs and a table. She was a good child, demanding no attention but inevitably receiving it because of her engaging ways and looks. She had red hair, like Mike's, in ringlets all over her head, and great eyes that were similar to Betty's in their size and in the curling sweep of their frunging lashes, but Betty's were gray while little Beth's were a deep dark brown. For the rest, she was plump and dimpled and happy, as most babies who are greatly loved and wisely cared for are apt to be Joan could hardly keep her gaze from her as she cooed and gurgled in a jargon all her own to the bunny and rag doll that Betty had brought along for her.
Joan went on.
"I'll take you over later and show you the rooms we're to have. But if Mrs. Hunter says to you, as she has to everyone else—I'm so glad we're going to have a
"I know, but those words somehow ring a portentous bell in my ears. Oh, well!" Joan shrugged her faint worry from her. "He's a darling, anyway. Todd's father, I mean. A little on the frail side physically—his heart. But you'd never guess it because he never mentions it. Let's talk about the wedding, though. After all, that's what you came out for. So much to be settled. Betts! I never realized how much."
"Yes, there's plenty," Betty agreed.
"First—I can't begin to tell you how glad I am that you're going to be my matron of honor. Nobody else would do, you know. But I wish I knew whom to ask for the rest of my bridal party."
"What's the trouble"
"Well, I thought of Sue and Elaine, naturally, because they were in our crowd at college. But Sue's baby is due to arrive in August so that's out. And Elaine—I don't know whether I can count on her or not. She expects her second infant the last of this month and she's written me that she's sure she'll be her old self again by June twentieth and can make it. She'll fly, she says, and leave both children home. I know she'll be here if she possibly can, but it does seem rather taking a chance."
"She'll get here: You know how she feels about you, Joan."
"Yes."
For a brief moment Joan's thoughts flashed back to those four college years when Elaine had been so much a part of her life. The time had been filled with storms and stresses as far as their relationship was concerned. Then, finally, during the Christmas holiday when they were both juniors, they had arrived at a mutual understanding which Joan had thought would last forever. Instead, to her dismay and chagrin and bitter pain, they had quarreled over Donald Barton the following summer. It had been all Joan's fault (she admitted it now freely), but at the time she had blamed Elaine. Not until their senior dance, a full year later, had the atmosphere really been cleared between them. Yet in spite of that, Elaine had always insisted
same. Betty was right. Elaine would certainly get here for the wedding.
Joan continued, "Well, okay. Elaine for one. I could ask Johnny. I suppose. But she feels awkward in long dresses. Betty. You know she never would go to any dance or a thing that was formal at college. She always ducked out. I really don't believe I've ever seen her in anything but a tailored suit or a gym outfit."
Betty nodded.
"So—Joan drew a breath—" I sent an airmail to Pam. She was the gal I roomed with in Zurich—I wrote you all about her. Remember? She was the one who was married in Paris to Tom Blakelee. That was in the spring, just before Todd was taken ill. Well, they stayed over another year so Tom could study at the Sorbonne, but they're due back in June and I wrote her that she just had to get here in time to be a bridesmaid at my wedding. I'm waiting for her answer now."
"Good. I'm crazy to meet her." "You'll like her. She reminded me of Elaine a lot. They're both tall and dignified and sophisticated-looking." Joan paused. "I think I won't have more than three. Betta. If Sue could be with us, I'd ask Mary Hall. She and her husband, Chuck, were the ones we went to Italy with you know. But she's not sure she can come all the way from Kansas."
"Whatever you decide, Joan."
"Besides, I don't want a big formal wedding, and a lot of bridesmaids implies that I want—a well—a cozy kind of wedding. Practically the whole town is going to be invited, though, so I don't know as cozy is the word!" Joan laughed and threw out her nanda in a little gesture of helplessness. "Honestly, the lists of people we have! There's Mother's list and my list and the Hunters list and Todd's list. We just can't skip anyone Not in Mapleton, at least. The two families have always lived here, you see. And of course Todd's father is known and loved by people both in and out of his church." She looked at Betty suddenly. "You were smart to stage your wedding in the college chapel, weren't you?"
U.S. Tars Aboard Sub Bergall Get Top Comforts
GROTON, Conn., (UP) — They never had it so good aboard the USS Bergall, a Navy submarine.
The Navy said today sailors aboard the sub based at the New London naval base are tapping their feet to jukebox tunes, sprawling on bunks with built-in bedlamps, and flicking their cigaret ashes in plaid-decorated ash trays.
It's all part of the "new Navy," and it is described officially as "an experiment in habitability."
The Bergall returned recently from the Portsmouth, NH., naval shipyard where it was outfitted with innovations for making life in an undersea craft more pleasant.
The sub's mess quarters convert into a recreation room with card tables and a jukebox. The latter plays two records for a nickel and the money goes toward buying new records.
In the sleeping quarters, aluminum partitions separate each bunk. Bedlamps provide reading light.
The Bergall's interior was redone in four shades of Green. Olive Green covers cabinets and lockers at the lower level, light green tile covers the deck in the living spaces, Grey-Green tile is used in engineering spaces and a Greenish tint called "Clipper Blue" decorates the upper portion of the bulkheads and overheads.
Lucky submariners aboard the Bergall also have a new sun-deck. The deck which previously was crowded when more than five men were topside has been extended three-quarters of the way around the conning tower so 20 sailors can take sun baths at the same time.
Huge Practical Joke Found Not Amusing
BARNSLEY, England (UP) — Harry Hull enjoys a joke as much as anyone, but he said today he wasn't amused Saturday when he came home and found:
1. Workmen piling 7000 bricks on his front lawn.
2. More workmen unloading four tons of potatoes and spreading them in neat rows alongside his garage.
3. Two trucks banking five tones of red shale against the side of his house.
4. A line of trucks waiting to unload three tons of coal, several tons of sand and gravel, a load of drainpipes, a large asbestos sheet and a consignment of used automobile tires.
5. A scrap metal dealer who said he had come to collect two tons of old railroad tracks and a man waiting to collect two used cars. Hull said the final straw was the appearance of an undertaker to "prepare the body for cremation."
The undertaker was so shocked to see the "body" trying to deal with the milling crowd of tradespeople. Hull said he needed a shot of brandy to avoid collapsing.
All the contractors said "a man with a husky voice" gave them their orders. Police said they were searching for the man.
Museum Seeks to Buy Ship “Pacific Queen”
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — The San Francisco Maritime Museum has signed a two month option to buy the famed square rigged sailing ship Pacific Queen for $25,000.
However, museum officials said yesterday the sale would depend on the outcome of a marine survey to determine if the ship's hull
Durante Plans Two Monthly Shows Next Week
By JACK GAYER
United Press Staff Correction
NEW YORK (UP)—"TIME in a predictament," (Broadway) Durante "It’s an ingamer!"
The great man was diving the fact that he's going to half-hour television shows season instead of the month hour show he has been with for the past four seasons.
"I don't know," he coined whether I'm expected to as good or only half as good way are they cutting me.
And how good is good? tainly ain't that last shot this season with all these effects. I felt like Barrie Bailey without Ringling.
He's Not Mad!
Jimmy isn't mad at any course—he was just kidding "Seriously," he said.
Know whether it will be entertaining two 30-minute shows other week, I think maybe I think maybe not.
But I do know this hour show, it's the last 30 that's the struggle. The hour goes by like lightning if your material ain't so good in a while, who gets tired for a half hour? But a 30 minuteseven when you beat, is an uphill pull.
NBC's realignment of next fall finds Durante and O'Connor employed by the sponsor. Durante kicks off show about mid-September Saturday night. O'Connor's same time the following...

THURSDAY, JUNE 10—"Blind Alley," the taut and probing drama of a minor Dillinger stripped of his killer instinct by a trapped psychology professor will be presented on the "TV Theater" over Channel 7 at 6:30. "Blind Alley" originally had a successful run on Broadway in 1935 and was revived there five years later. A movie version was made in 1939 and a remake in 1949 under the title, "The Dark Past." A true-life story of murder and a falsely accused woman will be dramatized in "In the Deep Night," during the "Justice" shower over Channel 4 at 8:30. Another of the Ray Bolger repeats with Ray setting his sights on Hollywood instead of Broadway during tonight's episode over Channel 7 at 8:30. A torrid ad-lib dance is featured in this episode as only Bolger can do it... Another in the repeat series is TVviewed on Channel 2 at 8:30, when Dick Powell portrays a doctor caught in a web of mystery surrounding a primitive Cuban village whose inhabitants believe in voodoolism, stars for your pleasure — and Powell is always good. This is on "Four Star Playhouse." "Dragnet" highlights a large market holdup at 9 over Channel 4, and at 9:30 over the same channel "Ford Theater" presents "Mason-Dixon line."

NBC's realignment of talent for next fall finds Durante and Donald Connor employed by the same sponsor. Durante kicks off the first show about mid-September on a Saturday night. O'Connors is on at the same time the following Saturday, then back to Durante the third week. Neither is on every fourth Saturday. Then the rotation starts again.
"I think on one of those off-weeks once a month I'm supposed to put a show on fil-lum," the comedian said. "But they won't use one of them during the regular season. They'll be for use next summer after I'm off the air on vacation."
Likes Live Shows
"I like doing them live shows. I get a bang out of them. It's show business. You do a bad show, of course, nobody's happy, but when you've got a good one, it's a real thing to do it."
The "vacationing" Durante is up with his old tricks. He's working in the night club gain, back at the Despacabach which he has visited for years.
"But I only do three club dates year," he said. "The Club, the Chez Paree in Chicago and the Desert Inn in Vegas. This time I'm going up to Boston for a week in the Latin Quarter, but that's unusual."
"Why do I do it? Well, I've known all these fellers 30-40 years. They say, 'Jimmy, won't you come back just once more for a couple weeks?' It's got me trapped — friendship, I mean, I'm getting to feel like Harry Lauder with all his firewell tours."
