Center St. Anaheim KE 5-3784 Third Battalion Slates Final Infantry Review The Third Battalion, 224th Infantry (NGUS) will hold its last review as an infantry outfit Monday in the Santa Ana Municipal Bowl, national guard officers announced today. The third Battalion is slated to become an armored outfit under the new National Guard setup. Composed of Headquarters and Headquarters Co., Company I of Orange, Company K of Anaheim, Company L of Santa Ana and Company M of Fullerton, the Third Battalion will be reviewed by Lt. Col. Charles S. Dever Jr., Third Battalion Commander. Presentation will be by Col. Emmett A. Rink, regimental commander. Santa Ana Drum and Bugle Corps will furnish music. Squad drill competition will be included. The review is slated from 8 to 10 p.m. with the public invited to attend, officers said. "It did," Samadu said today. Thereupon he confessed that the lot of a fire-eater is not always a happy one. "As long as I can concentrate, everything is all right," he said. "It's when people try to experiment on me that I suffer." On the stage of the Palace Theater the African-born Samadu currently is swallowing burning tapers, massaging his body with torches and popping glowing-coals into his mouth like so many sugar-plums. This is all in a day's work, but real peril comes when he leaves the theater. Small boys chase him with burning matches. Girls poke him with cigarets. Hot rivets are tossed in his face. Concentration "They always say they want to see if it hurts. If I am not concentrating like my uncle taught me in Africa, it does," he explained. Fire-eating runs in the family, Samadu said in a backstage interview. His uncle started him in training when he was 14 back in Lagos, Nigeria. "I had to pass certain tests in order to be initiated into the secret rites," he said. These included living on a diet of fish and fruit for several months, learning to concentrate on beautiful things and being abandoned in the jungle for several hours to prove his courage. Started Young By the time he was 15 he was able to vary the fish and fruit diet with some hot dishes, such as a smouldering torch. He eventually learned to walk barefoot on hot coals, to thrust an arm into a roaring fire and to inhale and exhale flame. Samadu went to England to study printing as a youth, and made a big hit at parties with his incendiary tricks. He soon abandoned his publishing ambitions and became a full-time entertainer. Now in his mid-30's, Samadu has eaten fire throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. His current engagement at the Palace is his American debut. He finds it necessary to keep in top physical shape to preserve his asbestos-like qualities. He gets to bed early, doesn't drink, eats a high protein diet, and concentrates whenever possible on beauty. One other thing. He doesn't smoke. No good fire-eater," he pointed out, "ever touches cigarets. Ph.
