Lillian Roth Back On Stage After Alcoholic Past
BY ELIZABETH TOOMEY
NEW YORK (UP) — Success,
the attractive singer said servently, is a lovely thing.
The living room of her hotel apartment was disarrayed, the phone rang constantly, the valet brought in a billowing white evening gown covered with a bulging white paper sack. And through all the confusion, the singer smiled serenely.
“It’s all so fast and nice and wonderful.” she said, and it was hard to believe this was Lillian Roth, the Cinderella star of the 20’s who skidded into alcoholism and obscurity.
This week her name glitters in Broadway lights over the famous Palace Theater, oldtime showcase for top vaudeville performers where the singer last played 23 years ago, at the peak of a million dollar career.
“Then I was 19. The boy I was engaged to died during that pearance, and right after that began my first drinking,” singer recalled unemotionally.
New Book
The desk in one corner of living room was stacked identical books, just arrived at the publisher, with white jackets that read, “I’ll Cry morrow,” by Lillian Roth.
Her husband, Burt McGuire, in the adjoining room talking the telephone about selling rights to the book, which teased absorbing, frightening detail; the singer drank steadily and creasingly for 14 years until ended in a mental hospital broke and disgraced.
“I would love a dramatic act to play my part, but there is more to the story showing how you can re-establish yourself as a personality, also establishing yourself as a son. I think it would take a good actress to show that.”
Asked if she had considered pearing in the part herself, her youthful ambition was to great dramatic actress, the grinned.
“I always say I’m not type,” she said. She actually look far different than her
Japan Premier To Leave for U.S. Friday
By CHARLES M. MCCANN
United Press Staff Correspondent
Japanese Premier Shigeru Yoshida's big secret is out at last.
He is leaving for the United States Friday on the first stage of a tour that will take him round the world.
Arrangements were made well in advance for his reception in Washington, London, Paris, Bonn, Rome Karachi, New Delhi, Bangkok and Singapore.
But it was not until today that Yoshida announced officially in parliament that he will make the tour.
The principal reason Yoshida held up the announcement is that the opposition Socialists, and most of the Japanese newspapers, have criticized him severely for planning the tour.
They complain that the Japanese political situation is in turmoil. They point to rising unemployment. They demand that something be done about the long-amouldering scandal in which highly placed politicians have been accused of taking bribgs from shipbuilders.
Yoshida Pro-American
But the opposition and the newspapers also are suspicious of Yoshida's strong pro-Americanism. They fear he may commit Japan to even closer cooperation with the United States.
Despite the criticism, "Mr. One Man" went on making hi splans, at the same time blandly denying to enraged opposition questioners in parliament that he had any definite plans for a tour.
Privately, Yoshida had said that he wants to strengthen the friendship between Japan and other countries, to thank the United States for the aid it has given.

Despite the criticism, "Mr. One Man" went on making hi splans, at the same time blandly denying to enraged opposition questioners in parliament that he had any definite plans for a tour.
Privately, Yoshida had said that he wants to strengthen the friendship between Japan and other countries, to thank the United States for the aid it has given Japan and to visit the many old friends he made during his long career as a diplomat.
May Ask Loan
It is reported, also privately, that Yoshida may ask a 120 million dollar loan of the United States.
He also wants more arms orders from the United States for Japanese factories, and the right to buy more of the American agricultural surplus, paying for it in Japanese yen instead of dollars.
Yoshida has a lot of friends abroad. His enemies are political ones, in Japan. They call him "Mr. One Man" because he likes to run things by himself.
Yoshida is 75. Fifteen years ago he was at the point of retirement after his distinguished diplomatic career. He made no secret of his friendship with the United States and Britain. He held no office during World War II. He was thrown in jail for urging that Japan seek peace.
After Japan's surrender, Yoshida was called upon to take the foreign ministry. In 1946 he became premier, as leader of the Liberal Party. He has stayed in that post, serving as his own foreign minister, ever since except for an interval of 17 months in 1947 and 1948.

New Book
The desk in one corner of the living room was stacked with musical books, just arrived from publisher, with white paper sets that read, "I'll Cry Torow," by Lillian Roth.
Her husband, Burt McGuire, was the adjoining room talking on telephone about selling movies to the book, which tells in turbing, frightening detail how singer drank steadily and insurgingly for 14 years until she died in a mental hospital at 34, he and disgraced.
Would love a dramatic actress play my part, but there is no discussion of using a singer head," Miss Roth said. "I feel it is more to the story than singing how you can re-establish yourself as a personality. It is establishing yourself as a per- I think it would take a very actress to show that."
Knock if she had considered ap- ing in the part herself, since youthful ambition was to be a dramatic actress, the singer need.
Always say I'm not my "she said. She actually does far different than her new fans expect after hearing her story. At 43, she is slim, handsomely dressed and with the kind of fresh, smooth complexion that usually means constant care, plenty of sleep and healthful food.
Top Bookings
She gets top night club bookings now, has a recording contract and seems about to be a successful author. Her book is being published this month.
"I have three kinds of fan mail" she said seriously. "Some of the letters are from people with a drinking problem who need help. Others are from ministers and priests who thank me for the encouragement I've given other people. And then I get letters from kids who like my singing. I even have a fan club now," she added proudly.
In her spare time, she and her husband, whom she met when she turned to Alcoholics Anonymous for help eight years ago, help alcoholics rebuild their lives.
"You don't get a miracle pill and then you're a new person," the singer said. "And nobody stands alone. If I'm a success again on that Palace stage, there are a lot of people who should be taking bows."
