Government To Withhold Tax From State Men WASHINGTON (UP.) — Uncle Sam has agreed to withhold Kentucky and Arizona income taxes from salaries of federal government workers in those states, and a similar agreement with Colorado is being negotiated, it was learned today. All state governments are required to withhold federal income taxes from their employees' salaries. All state governments are required to withhold federal income taxes from their employees' salaries. Under a 1952 law, enacted after strenuous protests by some states, the Treasury can withhold state income taxes of federal employees who work in states which use the withholding system of tax collection. More than half the states of the union have income taxes, but only six, Vermont, Oregon, Delaware, Kentucky, Arizona and Colorado, require employers to withhold the tax from employees' wages every payday. The Kentucky and Arizona agreements, signed early this month, take effect July 1. The system is already in operation for all the others, except Colorado. Farm Labor Work Up In State LOS ANGELES (UP)—Farm labor employment increased sharply in Southern California during the latter half of April because om improving weather conditions for crops, the Chamber of Commerce reported today. William C. Tesche, chairman of the chamber's agricultural committee, said the increase was most noticeable in harvesting of alfalfa, strawberries, asparagus, and carrots, and in fruit operations and sugar beet-thinning. Although prices for California navel oranges were somewhat below March, demand continued good through April. The lemon market, though showing an early decline, improved favorably, he said. Carrot shipments from Southern California increased around 250 per cent over March shipments, reflecting an increase from imperial Valley.
