New Avocado Tree in TV Debut
An event of considerable interest to Southland avocado growers will be a "teleview", on channel 2, KNXT, Sunday, May 30th, 11:30 a.m. to 12, of the first "re-constituted" Fuerte trees. These trees, the first of their kind, have been propagated "root and top" from an "outstanding" producer of this variety. Prior to this development all orchard trees of the Fuerte variety have been propagated upon sexual-variant seedling rootstock. Many years of "root-relationship" research have resulted in a method of vegetatively reproducing rootstocks from root cuttings taken from the root-systems of certain highly desirable, from production records, Fuerte avocado trees.
It is a coincidence that the first home of the Fuerte in California should also become the "focal" point in the research that developed the first "standard" n avocado rootstocks. Thanks to the individual tree production records maintained by Kenneth Casper of Yorba Linda, it has been possible to "separate the men from the boys" and clear up much of the mystery surrounding the erratic and unpredictable bearing behavior of the Fuerte.

The Fuerte tree in this grove that was selected as the "source" tree for this development has produced 4750 pounds of mature fruit in the eight - year period 1946-53, for an annual average of 594 pounds. This is impressive production. Particularly when compared to the Orange County average of 56 pounds per tree for the same period. H. L. Gillespie, of San Gabriel., originator of this development, will "guest" on the Garden Vagabond show.
