On-the-job experience in the District Attorney's office—where Robert P. They wanted to go to West Berlin, the father slad, for the burial of a dear departed aunt. The policeman nodded sympathetically. The sad-eyed mourners sped into West Berlin on an elevated train, chucked away their flowers and turned themselves in as political refugees. Their ruse was not unique among the clever and sometimes frantic methods used by some 12,000 anti-Communists who are fleeing from behind the iron curtain each month. United States and West German officials are girding for an increased wave of border crossings this summer, the "season" for defections. Officials are continually amazed at the courage and daring of the refugees. Czechs have crossed the border by stealing trains, commandeering airliners and even building a home-made tank. Residents of the Soviet zone of Berlin have crossed to freedom via automobiles, trucks, bicycles, horse-driven wagons, canoes, motor boats, excursion launches, rowboats, baby carriages, wheelchairs and subway and elevated trains. The bulk of East German escapees simply travel to East Berlin and then walk across the east-west city border or take a subway for six cents. The bulk of East German escapees simply travel to East Berlin and then walk across the east-west city border or take a subway for six cents. But others, fearing suspicious police along the way, take elaborate measures. Four members of a family from Ruedersdorf, only a few miles east of Berlin, traveled 200 miles in a family-owned excursion boat in a roundabout journey to West Berlin. An East Berlin bus owner filled his bus with East Berlin school children and with the promise of a free ride and then drove full-speed over the border. Communist police did not shoot for fear of hitting the children. Once across the border, refugees flock to housing and reception tents operated by the West German and United States governments. They have been engineered by a group of seven East German tightrope walkers, an 18-piece jazz band, a 35-man radio orchestra, a youth choir and entire athletic teams. Young children have been pushed across the border in baby carriages. Old people have made the break in wheel chairs. More Ships Removed From Military Run SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — The Military Sea Transportation Service has announced that six more of its ships will be taken off the active list as a result of decreased military shipping on the Pacific Coast. The ships include five T-2 type tankers and a water distilling ship. They will be placed in the San Diego group of the Navy's Pacific Reserve Fleet. Milbrat's 112 N.
