Anthony Eden Calls Meet With Russ And Chinese to Bring Indo-Truce GENEVA (UP) — British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden sought to meet today with Russian Foreign Minister V. M. Molotov and Red China's Chou En-Lai in an effort to learn whether they sincerely want to negotiate an end to the Indochina War. French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault, whose country has lost tens of thousands of its soldiers on the Indochina battlefields strongly supported Eden's move. The United States was lukewarm to the idea but Undersecretary of State Walter Bedell Smith went along with Eden on the understanding there would be no compromise on fundamental principles. Conference Recess Eden, a prime mover of the West's strategy at the Geneva Conference, made talks with Molotov and Chou possible by arranging a "day of grace for private contacts." In doing so, Eden caused a 24-hour recess in the secret "restricted talks" on Indochina that started Monday and produced nothing tangible but hard bargaining. Red Harrangue The United States, France and Britain were dismayed at the Communists' Geneva delegates' return to propaganda speeches yesterday. The conference had been put on a "restricted basis Monday with hopes that Communist delegates would stop hunting headlines. But Pham Van Dong, "acting foreign minister" of the phantom Communist Vietnam "government" in Indo-China, ended the businesslike handling of the re- College Paper Charges Sell Out to Politics CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (UP) A University of Virginia official said today a newly publicized campus sex scandal is being investigated. He refused to comment on a student newspaper charge about an approaching "sell out" to "political pressure." Colgate W. Darden Jr., university president, said the reported incident involving 11 students and a teenage girl "is now in the hands of the board of visitors." The board is the university's highest disciplinary and policy-making body. Darden said he did not feel he "is at liberty" to comment on charges published by the campus newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, that "political pressure" has been brought upon university officials to prevent the dismissal of the 11 male students. The editorial was itself the first published mention of the affair and gave no details, but widespread reports said a young woman who came here to attend a university dance in April went to a men's dormitory where the incident occurred. Latest figures from the country's complicated balloting system showed De Valera's Fianna Fail Party had won 57 of the 146 seats in the House compared with the combined opposition total of 67. De Valera picked up support from only one of the three independents who had backed his policies in the previous Dail (parliament). The combined opposition headed by former Premier John Costello's Fine Gael (United Party) were running as much as 25 per cent ahead of their vote in the last election and seemed certain to sweep into power. Costello's party won 43 seats, the Labor Party took 14, the Farmers Party, 17, the Independents 5, and the Republicans, 3, with almost two-thirds of the returns counted. Though 33 more constituencies had yet to declare their results, veteran political experts already talked about the "end of an era," the end of a 25-year reign of power for the half-blind "Dev." Most observers believed the 71-year-old De Valera will not run for office again. He has governed since 1951, when he regained power from Costello, with a slender two-vote majority given by two independents who supported his government. De Valera himself was re-elected for the 17th time in his County Clare constituency, but polled 1,171 less votes than in 1951, whereas Costello was reelected with a thumping increase. Idaho River Rises As Bonners Ferry Residents Flee BONNERS PERRY. Ida. Amphibious trucks rumbled into this town of 1800 persons today and residents pulled out as the Kootenai River rose past the flood stage. Water was seeping through dikes guarding the town despite mountains of sandbags and a spokesman for the Army Engineers predicted, "those dikes will never hold." The river rose to 33.3 feet. Idaho State engineer Mark Kulp said the dikes protecting the town could withstand a 34-foot level for only a short time. Official flood level is 31 feet. Predict 34-foot eyel The Weather Bureau predicted the 34-foot level would be reached today with still higher water to come. Several hundred acres of farm land south of Bonners Ferry was already inundated and 40,000 acres of rich farm land was threatened should the dikes break. Schools in the town were closed and the Great Northern Railway had discontinued running trains through Bonners Ferry until the water receded. Store owners in an eight-block downtown area moved their stocks to higher ground and some closed their doors. The owner of the Bonners Ferry theater posted a notice on the marquee reading "Doggone you, Kootenai, stay in your own bed," then removed the theater seats and closed up shop. A record snow pack in the mountains wilting under soaring temperatures was responsible or the Kootenai rampage and other swollen streams and rivers in... O'S MEATS TANTON AVES.
