Missionaries Dedicate Lives To 'Shangri-La' CHICAGO — Three missionaries have penetrated New Guinea hidden Shangri-La valley to live the rest of their lives among a people that time forgot, the barric, Stone-Age "Dani-men." The rest of their lives could be brief. Fortunately, however, they have so far been able to keep "friendly contact with one clan of the estimated 100,000 natives of the mountainrimmed Baliem River Valley, which is accessible only by air and then with difficulty. The story of the Protestant missionaries triumph was told today to more than 1,000 delegates to the annual convention of the Christian and Missionary Alliance by the Rev. Bernard King of New York, treasurer and deputational secretary of the CMA. King added more details in a separate interview. Reached Last Month The missionaries, who reached Shangri-La only last month, are: Lloyd Van Stone, native of Houston, Tex., and a graduate of the St. Paul (Minn.) Bible Institute; Einar Mickelson, CMA missionary with 15 years experience with other primitive New Guinea tribes, and Myron Bromley linguistic expert and former St. Paul Institute faculty member. Two pilots, former Canadian air force flier Al Lewis of Hamilton, Ont., and one-time U.S. Air Force bomber pilot Ed Ulrich of Pennsylvania, are key members. The valley got its romantic name of "Shangri-La during World War II when, for 47 days, news stories told how U.S. military units finally succeeded in rescuing three air crash survivors from the walled-in valley with a daring glider-snatching operation. No white man has ever lived in the valley. Living At Peace The missionaries, who can contact the New Guinea coast by radio, have reported that they are living at peace with one clan of the Dani-men about 1,000 persons strong. The various clans of the Stone-Age primitives are in a constant state of no-quarter-asked-or-given war. King said. Other clans, King said, have already shot arrows at the supply plane, "The Gospel Messenger. He described the Dani-men warfare and tribal customs as "very cruel. The missionaries, of course hope to moderate the natives barbarism." THE ESTIMATED FIRST-YEAR GAVING TO THE ARMY AMOUNTED TO NEARLY 14 MILLION DOLLARS! -1953- The Doctor Disagrees By Elizabeth Selfert CHAPTER THIRTY SHELLY thought about Craig's predicament with some of the workers who refused to be protected against the industrial hazards of the Refractories. She decided that the only thing to do was to present the situation clearly to the men's families. There, she thought, was an idea! Had anyone ever talked to the men's wives about the safety program at the plant? She considered a mass meeting for that purpose, then discarded the idea. She considered asking Craig to go individually to the wives—but first she'd talk to some of them. A determined wife, she argued, could do more than any plant executive—but the wife first had to know about the situation. Shelly would see that a few of them did know. She remembered a name or two would be eagerly welcomed. But she'd not let herself be too easily discouraged. The next morning she paid a second call. This woman was still in her housecoat, and she invited Shelly to her breakfast nook where she was having a cup of coffee with a neighbor. Both women were wives of plant workers; Shelly stated her purpose at once. As the plant doctor's secretary, she was endeavoring to find out how much the wives knew about the safety program at the plant. "Now don't tell me," she said gaily, "that it's none of your business. Because I'm sure you'd be directly concerned if your husband became ill or was hurt." "Well, sure . . ." said the visiting neighbor. And both women waited for Shelly to talk some more. She did men to use his safety devices. I thought, as one woman to another—" Her hostess stood up, and so did Shelly. The other woman watched. "Let me tell you something for your own good, Mrs. Carr. I'm older'n you, and I don't listen to talk—but I will say this to you. You just try to be as good a wife to your husband as I am to mine, and we'll all be better off." Shelly left, but she thought that over, and hesitated about making any more calls. She didn't know what the woman was hinting, and she thought perhaps she did not want to know. The next day, however, when she went to see Dorace Evans, she learned. "My husband don't care much for Dr. Talboy," Dorace said flatly. "Didn't he like Stephen either?" There, she thought, was an idea! She remembered a name or two which Craig had mentioned; she got some material from the office both on the program and on the men's records—and she bravely started out. This was to be a woman-to-woman thing. She paid her first two calls on the way to the office. For her work in the summer, she wore simple tailored棉衫; she was dressed in this unpretentious fashion when she approached one cottage, then another— The wives were at home. At eight-thirty in the morning, the first one was hanging diapers on the clothesline, and she accepted Shelly's suggestion that she not stop her work. "I guess I'll have to keep on," she agreed, "with three kids and a new baby—" Shelly asked about the baby. Had Dr. Talboy delivered it? (She knew he had.) And the woman knew that she knew. Shelly flushed. "I wasn't sure that you'd remember me from the office," she said contritely. "A woman behind a desk can seem like part of the furniture." "That may be, but we all know you're Dr. Carr's wife." "Of course," agreed Shelly, "that's why I help out at the office. The girl my husband had quit." "So I heard," said the woman dryly, bending over her clothesbasket. Shelly made a clumsy attempt to talk to the subject she hoped to have in hand. But before she had said much of anything, and the wife had commented only that she left all that sort of stuff to the Master, the baby began to cry, and Shelly knew that her departure plant workers; Shelly stated her purpose at once. She did. That morning, she made a complete thing of stating the hazards of working with clay, the measures taken by the company to prevent accidents of all sorts, including the results of silica inhalation. "Don't the men do what they're told?" asked her hostess blandly. "Not all of them, I'm afraid." "Can't the plant bosses make 'em do it?" "Not as well as you could, if you want to," said Shelly. "You need do no more than insist on your husband showering and changing his clothes before he comes home from the plant." They looked at her questioningly. "The men themselves demand that proper change rooms are provided," Shelly explained, "showers, lockers, and so forth—and then a lot of them won't use them." "But this way it saves on clothes," said one of the women. "How?" "You got work clothes, you got good clothes. If you change at the plant, you'd have to have something in between, and you have to take your coveralls home for washin'." Shelly frowned. "But if his health was better protected by using the change room with its ultra-violet lights, and its dust impregnation . . ." "Look, Mrs. Carr," said the home-owner, folding her arms on the table edge and leaning toward the earnest young woman in blue chamecy." Who told you to come here and tell us how to run our husbands?" Shelly drew back, her smile fading. "No one told me," she said gently. "I — Dr. Talboy is having some trouble getting some of the Shelly left, but she thought that over, and hesitated about making any more calls. She didn't know what the woman was hinting, and she thought perhaps she did not want to know. The next day, however, when she went to see Dorace Evans, she learned. "My husband don't care much for Dr. Talboy," Dorace said flatly. "Didn't he like Stephen either?" Well, to be frank—if you work for the refractories, you'd better like the Carrs—or else." Oh, I don't believe that's fair." Mrs. Carr, do you know much about working for the Carrs? It was rude, but it was a valid question. No," Shelly said, "I don't. In fact, I don't know too much about working-for anyone. I had one job for a very short time before my marriage—and since—well, the little I do in the office." The woman's eyes narrowed. "Funny, you never worked there when your husband was home," she said. "I didn't need to. Stephen had a well-trained secretary. But she left without warning, and I filled in. And now—Oh, it's a way to pass—I mean, to fill my time." Mhmmmn," said Dorace Evans. The tall woman in red-checked gingham studied her visitor with avid interest. "You're pretty young, aren't you?" "I'm twenty-five, almost." Too bad your husband had to go off to war so soon after you were married." Yes. But it was his own decision, and I agreed in it." "I'll bet you're lonely." Shelly laughed. "Of course I am. That's why the work helps." Yes, but maybe some other work—Dorace stopped abruptly. "Mrs. Evans," said Shelly with determination, "I came here for a purpose which I've stated. You've evaded an answer by saying that you don't like Dr. Talboy." "I said Bob didn't like him. But I don't care too much for him myself. A lot of us feel the same way." TV - RADIOLOGIC WEDNESDAY, MAY 19—A special anniversary program will be presented tonight on Channel 4 that merits the entire space, order that the full details might be given. Yes, an all-star cast has been assembled for the leading roles in "Alice in Wonderland," which marks the seventh anniversary program of "TV Theater." Starting at 9 o'clock, the cast includes Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy as narrators and commentators, Robbins Morgan as Alice, Art Carney (as the Mad Hatter), Bobby Clark (King of Hearts), James Barton (Mock Turtle), Joey Walsh (White Rabbit), Arthur Treacher (Cheshire Cat), Ernest Truex (White Knight), Cliff Hall (Ugly Duchess), Arnold Moss (Red Knight), Una O'Connor (Cook), Blanche Yurk (Queen of Hearts), Chandler Cowles (Caterpillar) and Fredd Wayne (March Hare). Bergen and McCarthy will be closely integrated into the TV adaptation. Like Alice, Bergen succumbs to the temptation to try the bottle "drink me," which reduces them to the size of pygmies. Charlie McCarthy is already small sized and no further shrinking. Thus, they are able to follow Alice through the tiny door into the magic garden and the world of make-believe. Following programs are compiled from reports provided by broadcasters. We assume no responsibility for last minute changes on their part. T.E.D.
