Coast's Belshe Caps JC Career With Three California Swim Championships
Orange Coast College freshman Buddy Belshe last week climaxed a perfect junior college swimming career by winning three state championships and the meet highpoint trophy in the California JC Championship Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at Fresno State College.
Limited by jaysee regulations to three individual events, Bud won the state titles in the 1500 meter, 220 yard and quartermile freestyle races at Fresno. The week previous the ex-Huntington Beach-High All-American had won the Southern California crown in the same three events and before that three Eastern Conference gold medals. In all three meets Belshe tied Fullerton JC's Jim Stevenson for the Helm's Athletic Foundation highpoint awards.
Belshe opened the three-day met in the FSC pool Thursday evening with a first in the 65-lap 1500 meter freestyle, winning in a pool record of 20 min. 9 sec., the best JC time in the nation for the event.
Friday evening the OCC aquator walked away with the 220 in 2:17.4 after smashing the existing Fresno pool record with a 2:17 flat in the prelimits. His third victory came Saturday night as he covered the 17 laps of the 440 in 4:56 for another pool record and national best time.
The two man Coast Squad of Belshe and Chuck Atkinson finished sixth in the team standings out of a field of fifteen. Atkinson picked up a fourth place medal in the 220, a fifth spot in the 1500 and a sixth in the 440. Fullerton's defending champs rolled up 86 marks to Los Angeles City College's 69-1-2 and Compton's 60-1-2.
Team scoring: Fullerton 86; Los Angeles CC 69-1-2; Stockton 33; Santa Monica 30; Orange Coast 27; Mt. San Antonio 14; Sacramento 12 Vellejo 5; El Camino 5; Santa Rose 2; Bakersfield 1; Los Angeles Valley, Taft and Montery Peninsula did not score.
Anaheim Tennis Trap City Council
At least once in their careers, Anaheim City Councilmen found themselves on a spot!
Members of the Anaheim Tennis Club led by three comely female members and two youthful male members were present at Tuesday night's session in city hall to request city construction of a "back-board" on which to practice their game.
The position in which Council found itself came about when the teenagers presented a check for $50 as part payment of the proposed back-board which was estimated to cost "several hundred dollars."
Explanation to the trustees was made by Recreation Director Don Derr who pointed out that a board

The position in which Council found itself came about when the teenagers presented a check for $50 as part payment of the proposed back-board which was estimated to cost "several hundred dollars."
Explanation to the trustees was made by Recreation Director Don Derr who pointed out that a board constructed of redwood would provide the 150 club members with facilities to practice their game by bouncing the ball against the wall.
Sensing their entrapment, the Council members referred plans for the back-board to the administrative officer for study and future action.
