Hollywood Stars Invade Plush Clubs In Effort to Raise Lowered Checks
By ALINE MOSBY
HOLLYWOOD — Hollywood stars with an eye on fat paychecks are invading the nightclub field, with customers soon able to get even Esther Williams and Fernande Lamas with their steaks and scotch.
Comedians, dancers and seasoned singers used to be the veteran entertainers in bistros. But in the day of fewer movie jobs the stars are whipping up acts and braving the saloon circuit.
Esther, minus a pool or bathing suit, plans to show she can do something besides a sidestroke when she opens at the Sahara hotel in Las Vegas next summer. tempting money to any movie name that can offer a good routine.
Everybody in Act
Mae West, Terry Moore, Lamas, Jeff Chandler and opera star Helen Traubel are working up acts. Keefe Brasselle, Van Johnson, Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Shelley Winters and Sonja Henie already have made night-club debuts in Las Vegas.
Two enterprising filmtowners who are cashing in on the trend are Earl Brent, who writes night-club acts, and Buddy Bregman, a music arranger. They specialize in doing material for actors who are wetting their feet in saloons for the first time.
"After an actor comes to us, it takes a week to know each other," Brent explained. "During that time we talk to the person to find out what he can do."
"We've turned down some acts because of their mental attitude. They sak you to write material, but then they start telling you how it should be done. After a long drawn-out fight they do what they want and it's embarrassing when they open in a club."
Actors Need Talents
One of their recent accomplishments is Doris Duke Helps Finance Hollywood Dancing Teacher
HOLLYWOOD (UP) — All is not heartbreak in Hollywood, and now and then some deserving Cinderella wakes up to find a millionaire standing there with $30,000 in her hand.
The heiress is Doris Duke, the world's richest woman, and the Cinderella in this case is a male named Sam Bregman. She named Sam Bregman Nico Charisse.
The tall, adventurous heiress moved to filmtown to live in Rudolph Valentino's old home, and recently she took up ballet dancing. Thanks to that hobby, she saved the day for Charisse.
His new dancing school she helped build opens tomorrow with a special room in which Doris can practice her ballet exercises.
Nico's "Cinderella" tale begins years ago when he brought to fame his prize pupil and then beautiful wife, Cyd Charisse. She became a dancing star at MGM and Nico won the position of MGM dance director.
But stardom brought problems,
Threat to Union Hill Made in New Leader
WASHINGTON (UP) — powerful union leaders today peared to be aiming to place in labor leadership from President Walter Reuther at President George Meany.
John L. Lewis, United Workers chief; Dave Beck of the AFL Teamsters and David McDonald, preside the CIO Steelworkers, read informal agreement here yet to work together on "mutualistic and economic problem."
Informed labor sources did reports the three plan start a third labor federation formal basis. They saw the movement instead as a power against Reuther and Meany.
Lewis, speaking for the after the meeting, said they would combat rising unemployment repeal the Taft-Hartley labor and seek national state and legislation for the benefit of economy as a whole, worker America."
Beck said the three had vited the AFL or CIO to join alignment. But Lewis expiains hope that "American labor whole" will go along with efforts.
Kirk Douglas to Answer Red Lie
HOLLYWOOD (UP) — Russ speaking film star Kirk Doug said today he will appear at Radio Free Europe broadcast week to answer a Comm broadcaster who said the lacked the literary knowledge fifth-grade Russian student.
Brent explained, "During that time we talk to the person to find out what he can do.
"We've turned down some acts because of their mental attitude. They sak you to write material, but then they start telling you how it should be done. After a long drawn-out fight they do what they want and it's embarrassing when they open in a club."
Actors Need Talents
One of their recent accomplishments was a nightclub routine for Kent Taylor, the "Boston Blackie" of television, who had "never opened his mouth to sing before."
Brent also wrote the nightclub act for Jane Powell while Bregman is in demand as an arranger for such entertainers as Joanne Gilbert, Kay Thompson, Van Johnson, Joel Gray and Anna Maria Alberghetti.
"A star no longer can get up in a club and sing 'Indian Love Call,' said Brent. "Their name is a drawing card, but they have to have talent and a good routine."
Not every movie queen can be turned into a thundering success in a club, however, he added.
"Some of them just don't have the courage to get up there," he said.
Carlson ‘On Spot’ With TV Portrayal
HOLLYWOOD (UP)—Richard Carlson has become one of the top 10 television stars—by being the only TV series actor to portray a living character who's still around to watch the impersonation.
Carlson's weekly program, "I Led Three Lives," is a suspenseful serial based on a book written by Herbert Philbrick. For nine years Philbrick posed as a Communist for the FBI and still is very much around, as a New York newspaper (The Herald Tribune) columnist.
Philbrick keeps an eye on how Carlson plays Philbrick.
FBI Must Okay
"It’s atremendous responsibility to portray a real person every week," Carlson said today. "Furthermore, we are dealing with material that is the most important thing in the world today and that's saved the day for Charisse.
But stardom brought problems, and soon they were divorced. Cyd wanted another dance teacher and Nico lost the job.
The dance instructor opened a tiny, unimpressive studio among the fancy steak houses on La Clinega blvd. He boasted such famous pupils as Paulette Goddard, Ava Gardner and Sarah Churchill. But then he faced losing even that business.
His landlord raised the rent and Nico lost the lease. He mentioned to one of his new pupils, Miss Duke, his dream of building his own big studio in the parking lot next door.
She enthusiastically agreed to loan him half the money for the $60,000 studio. He added his own savings, and borrowed the rest from his other pupils, $100 here. $200 there.
The dream blossomed into an elegant school with ballet, drama, voice and even fencing teachers. Now Nico's many pupils include the entire Mason family—James, Pamela and five-year-old Portland; Tyrone Power's two-year-old daughter, Judy Garland's child, Lisa, and such grown-ups as dancer Gene Nelson.
Pupil Duke is in Honolulu. When she returns she'll find her own private studio above the school garage where she can practice entire chats and plies in solitude.
Douglas said he had access an invitation from the Crusader Freedom, operators of Radio 2 Europe, to speak on a broad which will be beamed to Rupert and all Iron Curtain countries.
The independent broadcast organization said it had monitored a Communist broadcast April which described the United States as lacking educational and cultural advantages. The broadcast was quoted as saying:
"Once upon a time an Italian film producer invited (an) American artist (Douglas) to play a role in a film based on Homer’s *Ode*sey." In reply to this suggestion, the artist said that he was interested in knowing whether Homer wrote any other scripts."
The actor said he not only led Homer as a child, but re-released the Greek author during his college days.
He described the attack as designed "to picture the American people as a nation completely lacking in breeding, culture and education," and said he welcomed opportunity to answer it because it did "much more than attack me, it uses me as an instrument."
Douglas, whose parents were Russian immigrants, said he would make his talks in the Red brook caster's own language.
School Kids Causing Headache to State Legislators and Lobbyists
By JAMES C. ANDERSON
SACRAMENTO —A neat problem in practical politics is occupying the attention of a State Senate Committee these days. It's what to do about or with the hordes of school kids which clog the capitol during sessions.
For many years, the legislature conducted its business in Sacramento attended only by a handful of curious spectators, a considerable number of others.
State Legislators and Lobbyists
By JAMES C. ANDERSON
SACRAMENTO — A neat problem in practical politics is occupying the attention of a State Senate Committee these days. It's what to do about or with the horde of school kids which clog the capitol during sessions.
For many years, the legislature conducted its business in Sacramento attended only by a handful of curious spectators, a considerable number of lobbyists and the working press.
But in recent years, the schools have been sending class upon class of children to Sacramento in an effort to show the youngsters a real, living, breathing example of "democracy in action."
In the short budget session last March, more than 10,000 school kids packed the galleries from 228 different schools. On one day alone, 1,733 children were recorded as official visitors.
Many times, the kids went away disappointed.
Quiet Scene
Instead of a heated debate, they saw only a handful of legislators on the floor, many of them reading newspapers while a clerk droned through a routine reading of a number of bills.
This was not particuarly the fault of the legislators or the educators. It happened only because the classes came to Sacramento on a hit-or-miss schedule and were in the galleries on days the houses were in recess or transacting only routine business.
Not only did the children often leave the capitol without getting the real "feel" of the legislature.
Lobbyists Complain
Then, too, lobbyists occasionally found themselves unable to get into the galleries because all the seats were filled by the youngsters. This resulted in considerable "third house" to reserve some gallery seats for legislative representatives interested in various bills.
The senate committee trying to solve all these problems is headed by Sen. George Miller (D-Richmond).
The committee hopes to come up with some definite legislation to introduce in the 1955 session.
Out of it may come a program where the school kids will get a better break, the lobbyists will have seats in the gallery and the legislators can drink their coffee in peace.
Threat to Union Heads Made in New Leadership
WASHINGTON (UP) — Three powerful union leaders today appeared to be aiming to take top place in labor leadership from CIO president Walter Reuther and AFL president George Meany.
John L. Lewis, United Mine Workers chief; Dave Beck, head of the AFL Teamsters Union; David McDonald, president of the CIO Steelworkers, reached an informal agreement here yesterday to work together on "mutual" social and economic problems.
Informed labor sources discounted reports the three planned to start a third labor federation on a normal basis. They saw the agreement instead as a power-play against Reuther and Meany.
Ewis, speaking for the three at the meeting, said they agreed combat rising unemployment, to deal the Taft-Hartley labor law, seek national, state and local legislation for the benefit of "the economy as a whole, workers and America."
Beck said the three had not inducted the AFL or CIO to join theiriment. But Lewis expressed that "American labor as a lee" will go along with their efforts.
Rirk Douglas to Answer Red Lie
HOLLYWOOD (UP) — Russian-king film star Kirk Douglas today he will appear on a Free Europe broadcast next to answer a Communist caster who said the actor and the literary knowledge of a grade Russian student.
Crime Increasing In State Faster Than Population
SACRAMENTO (UP)—Crime in California is increasing faster than the state's population growth Richard A. McGee director of corrections said today.
McGee nationally known penologist blamed the increase largely on a "generation born in depression and reared in war."
The number of felony complaints filed with the state's superior courts during 1953 was up seven per cent per 100,000 of the state's population from 1952 McGee said.
He said the increase was "spotty" all over the state but was greatest in Southern California. He said the increase was part of a nationwide trend.
Crime and Youth
McGee said he believed the number of felony complaints filed per 100,000 was the best index of criminal activity. He said the method of computation took into full account the population increase of the state.
"I think the increase results partly from the dislocation of population by the influx into the state and partly from the fact we are dealing with a generation that has lived in a period of great social disorganization" McGee said.
"The 19 to 25 year age group that is responsible for most crime was born in a depression and went to school during war" McGee said.
"they never lived in normal conditions."
