2. Before the public session, the subcommittee questioned Joseph Alsop, syndicated news columnist in private. Army counsel John G. Adams is asserted to have let Alap have an advance look at an Army report of March 11 alleging pressure by the McCarthy group in Schine's behalf.
3. Stevens conceded, in answer to a McCarthy question, that he did not believe promoting Schine to general would have stopped the senator's investigations. But the secretary said there was "plenty of pressure" to give favors to Schine.
4. Stevens said Schine's record at Fort Dix, N.J., his first base was "not particularly good." He was "better," he said in his second eight weeks of training at Camp Gordon, Ga.

Santa Ana police were highly praising the work of Orange officers in their arrest yesterday of much - wanted William Verdo Johnson, a 27-year-old father of four children who last night confessed to cashing bogus checks in 43 different communities.
"It was an outstanding example of fine police work". Acting Police Chief Harry Fink of Santa Ana said this morning.
Johnson was arrested yesterday in an Orange motel by Sgt. A. Cervantes and Assistant Orange Police Chief Carl Krueger. The interpolice department teletype in Santa Ana, which usually closes down at midnight, chattered away all late-night as community after community listed their wants on Johnson.
Johnson admitted last night that he had cashed about 73 fictitious checks in the 43 communities. He told officers that he did not believe that his wife knew anything about the way he procured his income.
He said their last child was born four months ago in Santa Barbara while he was in the midst of his check - writing spree.
