Cinco de Mayo is Theme of Mariners 'Fleet' Meeting Approximately 100 members and guests attended the Mexican dinner and meeting of the Mariners "Fleet" Wednesday evening at the First Presbyterian church. The theme, appropriately selected to stress this week's "Cinco de Mayo" celebration which was May 5, was emphasized by Mexican dolls, red peppers, scrapes, red geraniums and other items relatives to Mexico with the members of the Flagship, one of the seven in the "fleet" serving the dinner. This "ship" group had charge of decorations and added to the spirit of the occasion by wearing Mexican costumes. Mexican Program The For Master Ship in charge of the program, Forrest Simonton, chairman, Carmen Alvarada from Puebla, Mexico, did two Mexican dances. She wore a very elaborate costume. Bette Jo Mittman, accordionist, played three Mexican numbers, "Jolly Caballero," "Granada," and "Chiapanecas." She was also in costume. Bill Talevich sang Mexican numbers accompanying himself with his guitar. Business presided over by Admiral of the Fleet, Russell Hess. He announced a Mariner District conference at Forest Home, May 21-23. The Rev. Roland Anderson, Anaheim, will be one of the main speakers. The dance at Sunny Hills open to all Mariners in the district and sponsored by the Fullerton Mariners was also announced as were plans for an Anaheim Mariners Carnival the first of September. The organization is sponsoring a big church picnic July 24 at Orange County Park, stated Hess. Admiral's trophy was presented to the Friend Ship for the most members recruited since the last Fleet meeting. Women carrie lou sutherland - editor Capistrano Mission Deanery Program Marker By Drama, Father's Talk, and Chairmen Report Mrs. Robert Murphy, n her own inimitable manner, relived characters in the books, especially "Miss Julie" and "A Multitude Sina" as she gave reviews at the meeting of the Los Angeles Arcade Council of Catholic Women, Orange County Deanery, where members met for luncheon at San Juan Capistrano Mission Tuesday. Introduced by Mrs. Frank Baes-kens of Orange, the guest artist held the interest of more than 200 members of the deanery, the majority from county parishes. President, Mrs. L. A. Benner of Anaheim presided over the meeting and Father Vincent Lloyd-Russell, pastor of the Mission, led in prayer. In his talk, Father Lloyd-Russell not only congratulated the members on their splendid program and their many works of charity, but was high in his praise for the cultural side and educational aspect of the program. "The work of the Council as set up by the bishops of the United States was very commendable and a fine demonstration of Catholic principles," said the speaker. Name Special Guests Special guests were: the Rev. Halle of New Hampshire, the Rev. Bernard Butler and the Rev. P. J. Mellely, both of Laguna Beach; the Rev. Ernest Speckhart, Westminster; the Rev. New officers were elected with Buelah Roberts of Arlington named president. Attending from Anaheim were Irene Brown, president; Elizabeth Aldrich, Mollie Claes, Dorothy Harvey, Myrtle Mallin, Dorothy Bradley and Martha Russell, who was appointed patriotic instructor. Huntington Beach Post and Auxiliary members served the turkey dinner for district members attending. Announcements Townsend club meeting is slated Monday at 1 p.m. at the Carpenter's hall on South Palm Street. Speaking at 2 p.m. at this meeting will be Harry I. Fox. The public is invited. As civil defense is of vital concern to all citizens of Anaheim, the parent-teacher group invites any interested parties to attend this meeting. Newly elected officers who will be installed are Mrs. Howard Wilkinson, president; Mrs. Lawrence Martin, first vice-president; Mrs. Sam Loasd, second vice-president; Mrs. Harold Ferguson, recording secretary; Mrs. William Rickle, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Wilmer Troutman, treasurer; Mrs. Ted Dinkler, historian; Clyde Nickle, auditor. Talevich, baritone, in a recital Sunday afternoon, May 16, at 4:30 p.m. at Anaheim Presbyterian church. This is the second recital to be presented in the First Presbyterian church by Mrs. Talevich, artist of that church. Among those whom she has studied are Ellie Spelman, Clarence Mader, David Craighead. For several years she has taught piano and orchestra in Anaheim. Beginning his musical career at Ana Ana High school, Talevich was attended Santa Ana Junior College. While serving as an aviation cadet he was featured in music shows in the Army Air Force. Since that time he has become well known in musical circles in Orange County, singing with the Orange Orchestra and other organizations. Charter Officers Installed for Western Junior High PTA; Record 123 Parents as First Members One hundred and twenty-three men and women last night recorded their names as charter members supporting the newly-organized Western Junior High School Parent-Teachers Association and proved unanimously such and organization, by electing its first officers. These first members represented the five elementary districts within the orbit of the new junior high school which opens its doors this next fall. The schools are Cypress, Centralia Magnolia, Laurel at Los Alamitos, and Savanna. Mrs. Mahaffie was elected the first president. She is from the Cypress district. Mrs Ray Finley, fourth district president, installed the newly-elected officers employing the thought of a huge wheel in uniting the operation of the PTA at Western for ensuing year. "Your president, Mrs Mahaffie, is the hub of all activity," said Mrs. Finley. "She is the center force. From this hub spreads the spokes of the wheel with the rim, or members, encompassing the two, insuring strength and safety in progress. It is through complete function of all forces that success will be written across the pages of your history book at the end of the first year of Western Junior High School PTA," concluded Mrs Finley. Officers Installed Entfusting Mrs Mahaffie with the guidance of the organization, the installing officer then seated other leaders in this neophyte association. They are: Mrs. J. E. In the receiving line along with Mrs. Wethered were Mrs. Roland Anderson, wife of pastor; Mrs. Marion Pickel, president of fellowship; and Mrs. William Drake, vice president. Enjoying the hospitality and getting acquainted were 75 new members. A special committee on arrangements and serving rea and cookies included Mrs. William Chambers, chairman, Mrs. Hudson Rennie, Mrs. Irwin Stahl, and Mrs. W. P. Hall.
