Plan State’s Largest Horse Show
Preparations now are in progress for the National Horse Show at the 1954 Orange County Fair, now recognized as the largest horse show in California, with Harry Marrell returning as show manager and Beulah Marrell as secretary.
More than 500 animals were entered in the 1953 show, according to W. P. Croddy, director of the 32nd District Agricultural Association, sponsoring the Fair. This record caused the Orange County show to outrank even the traditional presentation at the State Fair in Sacramento, in point of individual entries.
A major feature of the horse competition is the junior show which has focused attention on Orange County the past three years. This season there will be four performances for the junior division, with a total of 29 classes to be judged.
Premiums totaling $17,000, including twelve $500 stakes, will be awarded during the six-day show, Mrs. Harrell announced. Silver trophies will be presented to junior winners.
The Marrells, who have lived on their Garden Grove ranch since 1936, have had years of experience in the management of horse shows. They have staged the last three shows at the Orange County Fair, and they have managed shows at the National Date Festival in Indio from the start. Before that, they were in demand to conduct private horse shows.
Entries from leading stables throughout the western states will be competing in a variety of events to be shown both at daytime and evening performances during the run of the Fair, Aug. 10-15.
Admission to the Horse Show Arena will be free to all fairgoers since a single-admission policy has been adopted by the Fair Board, with one main-gate price established. All feature entertainment events are free.

He pointed out that this scheme was rejected for Germany and Dulles had told him that the Communist plan was "equally unacceptable" to the Republic of Korea and the U.N. members who took part in the Korean War.

Set Abbreviations For June 8 Ballot
SANTA ANA—Political designations of candidates whose names appear on the June 8 primary election ballot will be abbreviated as "Rep" and "Dem" and the voters should know that they represent Republican and Democrat.
Three Democrats, James E. Walker, Curtis S. Burrow and Lester Van Tatenhove, asked that Orange County Clerk, B. J. Smith be required to spell out the party names after the names of the candidates.
Orange County Counsel Joel E. Ogle told the board of supervisors that Smith can do as he pleases, and Smith said he would substitute derivations of "Rep" and "Dem" for the party names.
Most county clerks will do the same; the law provides that the abbreviations are permissable if the first three letters of the party moniker is used. The State election code sets up a model, and on it the party names are abbreviated.
The three Bourbons didn't explain why they insisted on the word Democrat spelled out.

Coast Guard to Probe Hit-Run Boat Mishap
BALBOA (UP)-The Coast Guard said today it will investigate an alleged hit-and-run collision inside the Balboa jetty in which a 30-foot sailboat was accused of slicing a rowboat in half and then fleeing.
Four persons aboard the rowboat told harbor authorities the sailboat "Francesca" knifed through their small craft Sunday and left them clinging to the wreckage. They said they were in the water about 15 minutes until another craft picked them up.
The four were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sauer, of Maywood, and Mr. and Mrs. William Lightfoot, of Montebello. The Sauers were treated for minor cuts and bruises at Hoag Presbyterian hospital.
Occupants of the rowboat said the "Francesca" circled them once after the collision but then headed out to sea. The "Francesca" returned four hours later. Owners R. J. Cox of Sunland and P. Lewis of North Hollywood told harbor authorities they circled four times, then continued out to sea because another craft gave assistance to the rowboat party.
