"Blooper" Shocks Radio Listeners NEW YORK (UP)—An unidentified radio employee was in hot water today for shocking listeners across the country with an obscene exclamation in the middle of a Washington program urging support to build churches in Germany. The guilty party, either an announcer or an engineer, uttered his oath in a Washington studio before a "live" microphone which he apparently thought was "dead." Commentator Fulton Lewis Jr., had paused to allow local stations to broadcast a commercial midway in his Mutual Broadcasting System network program. The commercials were duly recited at individual stations, and as Lewis resumed speaking a male voice suddenly was heard in a brief but pungent profanity. Mutual officials here said the blooper was traced to a Washington station. A mike used for the commercial was not cut off the circuit when the program was switched back to Lewis' home in Maryland where his broadcast originates. Lewis meanwhile, continued with the last half of his program, speaking on behalf of a "Wooden Churches Crusade" to build churches in Germany. Radio stations from coast to coast were deluged with telephone calls from listeners protesting about the interruption or seeking an explanation. Rex Howell, manager of station KFXJ at Grand Junction, Colo., said dozens of calls flooded his switchboard. He said he immediately warned MBS stations at Denver and Salt Lake City to cut out the bad spot from a transcription of the Lewis commentary they were scheduled to broadcast later.
