Oldest Art Club Is Rembrandt at Pomona
One of the oldest art clubs in Southern California, the Rembrandt club of Pomona college, will mark its 40th year with an art bassar in Rembrandt Hall on college campus Thursday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 9:30 p.m.
Work of more than 50 local artists will be displayed, all obtainable at moderate prices. Included will be drawing, silk screens, ceramics, enamels, weaving, sculpture, block prints, dolls, jewelry, and Christmas cards.
The club will use proceeds from the bassar to provide more art scholarships and to add to the art department's collection.
The club was founded in 1905. Mrs. Frank Brackett, wife of a Pomona College astronomy professor, was active in encouraging the study of art when the college was young and when Claremont was still a small oasis in the sagebrush. When the club began its activities, it was composed of students and older people in the community. Since then, Claremont has become a well-known art center.
The Rembrandt club undertook to raise the money to build Rembrandt Hall and Mrs. Brackett's name headed the subscription list. The hall was dedicated and put into use in 1914.

Travel Book Review Given at Episcopal Guild Meeting
St. Agnes Guild members of St. Michael's Episcopal church, at its meeting Monday night in the home of Mrs. H. O. Weldon, 755 North Janns St. heard Miss Margaret Bradley of the Anaheim Library staff give a review of "Gasoline Gypsy" a travel book by Miss Peggy Iris Thomas. "The book is a summary of her own travel by motorcycle with her alredale dog Matelot, her only companion on a tour through United States, Mexico, and Canada," said Miss Bradley, who added "Her motorcycle, 'Opple' ran perfect for her trip.
She "bumped" her way over more than 14,000 miles, pitching her tent in strange places including a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles, a Mexican village barroom, Louisiana mosquito infected swamp, and on the heights of New Jersey's Palisades, pointed out Miss Bradley.
Miss Thomas started with $60 in her pocket and had to stop along her way to recoup her finances. She, at one time held down two office jobs at once, her day running into more than 18 hours.
Encountering every possible weather barrier, Miss Thomas' description of her 'open road' travel is one of extreme interest, and challenge, said the reviewer who urged the members to read the book.
Business meeting was presided over by Mrs. T. E. Harrison with two new members, Mrs. Esther Coupland and Mrs. C. B. Miller.
Guests included Mrs. J. H. Mitchell, Mrs. R. P. Prendergast, Mrs. Doye Ford, Mrs. R. P. Greedus, Mrs. K. N. Briney.
