City Sidelights by SPURGEON SPARKS The war in Korea is over. More than one person in Anaheim and Orange County is sure of it. The men are home in many cases and there is less news copy on the subject. However, the fact that the actual fighting has died down, is being felt in another way. Men and women are being laid off from defense projects. Although the lay-offs around Anaheim have not been serious, still merchants are admitting a pre-Christmas slump which is somewhat unseasonal. Largest number of lay-offs have been at the Anaheim plant of Northrop Aircraft where rangefinder for the Ordnance Department are being made. Although not all the departments have felt the heavy hand of the lay-off, still enough men and women have been sent home on an indefinite lay-off to slightly affect the local economy. Although a certain slowing up in production has been noticed in several other major local plants, no lay-offs have been noted. The rains came to Orange County this week (on minor basis) and most everyone was pleased. In fact many are openly advocating more of the same wonderful stuff. All, but three fellows in Anaheim. These three, Harold Smith, Hallowe'en parade chairman; Bill Walker, stadium chairman for the Hallowe'en show in La Palma Park; and Bob Wurgaft, general chairman of the Hallowe'en festival. These hard-working gentlemen are offering daily prayers that old "Juice Pluv" will remain in hiding at least until after Oct. 31. Ernie Moeller of the Chamber of Commerce, sits back and plans for hospital to be located here. This plan, one which will adequately serve both the city of Anaheim and all the areas from Santa Ana Canyon to the Los Angeles County line, should get under way soon. The local group will draw plans for a smaller unit in the beginning, than its sister hospital to the North, but actually should be in business not long after the Fullerton group. Watch for some hot news coming from the local group in the not-too-far-distant future! Anaheim is growing! If anyone should be doubt, tract maps now on file in City Hall show amazing figures to the effect that there are some 20 subdivisions now building within the city limits. These 20 projects account for 1151 building lots, all of which will see construction on them within the year. Added to this, plans which have been presented to the City Planning Commission show approximately 42 additional subdivisions on drawing boards, which would add another 3644 lots. This brings the grand total of lots up for construction to 4995 during the next fiscal year. The city-wide census now under way, will no doubt bring the population to an all time figure above 22,500. It is believed. Population experts, to obtain an average population figure based on housing, multiply the number of homes by 3.3 percent. Using the figure of 4895 as the number of new houses to be built this coming year, one finds that there may be a population in Anaheim by this time next year of more than 38,900. Our only hope is that local merchants will keep step in their merchandising techniques in an effort to keep the added retail dollars at home. Anaheim's Assembly of Church is currently engaged in enlargement campaign. October enlargement month for all Assembly of God churches. The Anaheim church is entered in the Christmas Life Magazine contest and at same time is participating in competition with First Assembly of God in Portland Ore. The payoff of the Portland church is the N.D. Davidson, father of the toror of the Anaheim church Rev. W. R. Davidson. Each Sunday, a special feast has been planned for the month of October and November. Inch among the special features many outstanding musical groups and speakers. Sunday, Oct. 25, Rev. Dean Duncan, president Southern California's Christ's bassaders. (Assemblies of God Y Organization) will be the speaker at the morning worship service at 11 o'clock. The following Sunday, Nov. will feature Art Atwell, noted trumpeter. Atwell will play speeches for the Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 8 is "Old Time Day," at which time the Sunday School will come dressed western or old time "garb." Nov. 15 is Southern California ble College choir, directed by Lord Atwell, will provide the music during the Sunday School morning worship services. The over-all theme for the tire enlargement campaign "round-up days." The public invited to attend any of these services with free transportation vided. openly advocating more of the same wonderful stuff. All but three fellows in Anaheim. These three, Harold Smith, Hallowe'en parade chairman; Bill Walker, stadium chairman for the Hallowe'en show in La Palma Park; and Bob Wurgaft, general chairman of the Hallowe'en festival. These hard-working gentlemen are offering daily prayers that old "Jupe Plaw" will remain in hiding at least until after Oct. 31. Ernie Moeller of the Chamber of Commerce, sits back and holds his rain insurance policy taken out for just such emergencies and joins his fellow workers in supplication. While Pullerton and La Habra acurry around in their fund raising drive for St. Jude hospital to be located on a lip of high ground in Sunny Hills, members of the (Anaheim) Mother Colony Hospital Association are quietly preparing their population expatriates to obtain an average population figure based on housing, multiply the number of homes by 3.3 per cent. Using the figure of 4895 as the number of new houses to be built this coming year, one finds that there may be a population in Anaheim by this time next year of more than 38,900. Our only hope is that local merchants will keep step in their merchandising techniques in an effort to keep the added retail dollars at home. One sure way is the modernization of store fronts and interiors. People still like to spend their money in pleasant surroundings. This is being borne out by the increased business enjoyed by the progressive merchants in Anaheim who have taken the step. There's No Substitute for Paid Circulation. GOING SOMEWHERE CALL A YELLOW CAB No charge for extra passengers 4552 or 5544 Cruise with Death CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE BROWN read the sheet of blue paper, looked up, read it again, cleared his throat—a sure sign that what he had to say was going to be difficult. "Mrs. Redding ... Miss Walton ..." He looked from one to the other. "We must all try to be brave." Carlotta closed her eyes for a moment, then faced him steadily. "Read it to us," she demanded. Brown still hesitated. "I think you may as well," said Randolpn. Brown cleared his throat again. The note was brief. "I just can't face it, the police and all. Of course I did it. He threatened to expose me, and make我 poor. I was afraid of that. I had a gun and threw it overboard afterwards. But Todd saw it. I was hunting the will when the captain caught me, and I had to get away. I didn't mean to hurt him. By the time you read this, I will be over the side. Now you know everything, and you can go home. Good-bye." Laurence O. Redding." I couldn't talk any more. It seemed to me that the time had come for me to go into action. I left her there with Brown, and made my way to the promenade deck. One question kept churning around in my mind. Why had Todd appeared so terrified when he discovered that Larry had jumped overboard? It had seemed to suck the courage and the cockiness right out of him, and he was like a different person when he came back from his unsuccessful search. When I stepped outside, I noticed that the ship had slowed down so much that it could barely be held into the waves. Although the storm itself was over, the sea was still so disturbed that only a sea gull could have been happy on the spray-washed decks. I made my way to the bridge, and found it in charge of a sulky Heczekiah, who informed me that the captain was personally conducting the party looking over the Spiritus for Mr. Redding. That was all he could tell me, nor would he comment on it, or on anything else. I went on down to deck B, agreeability at all costs seen to be his new role, for he twisted his ratty face into a smile. "Meggie and me was wonder m'lady, would you join us in a of tea? You being American all that." I hesitated, feeling more unable than I can ever remember before or since, but I accept. We went into the salon, Todd, who moved stealthily matter what he was doing, open the panel. Through it I Macbeth in the galley take off steaming kettle and fill a brass earthenware teapot on a tray ready laid. She pushed it throttle Todd, then came around plumped down complacently at blond mahogany table. This is homely, I must a Macbeth remarked to us. She was on her third strong before she began to let me see they had invited me. She gave a smile as ingratiating as a moo trap. Tammie and me was thinking m'jady, you knew more than we were telling. A shiver of apprehension over me." What makes you t The note was brief. "I just can't face it, the police and all. Of course I did it. He threatened to expose me, and make us poor. Redding. Gay moaned. "Oh no, it can't be true. He hasn't . . . he wouldn't . . . You will have to find him . . ." She nait rose from her chair, her hand at her throat, her eyes staring blindly. Then she pitched forward. There were no nistronics this time. She had fainted. After Gay had been revived and Dr. Randolph and Macbeth had taken her to her cabin, Lisa Brown, Carlotta, and I sat on numbly. Todd had disappeared. This new disaster forced us into a coalescence of misery, and nobody felt like breaking away. I had asked Brown to let me see Larry's note, and I sat reading it over and over. The more I read it, the more I thought that there was something very queer about it, and at last I decided to speak up. "Did you notice he spoke of throwing his gun overboard? Yet, Mr. Brown, you said you found a gun on the deck and pitched it over yourself." "Poor Larry must have forgotten that," Carlotta murmured. "He wasn't very bright." "What do you make of it?" I asked. Brown looked at me gravely. "It could mean that Redding was making a false confession. It could mean that the real murderer was still on board." Carlotta appeared suddenly to remember that she was the widow. She gave a choking sob, pressed her handkerchief to her eyes, but couldn't bear to think of him," she said, as she groped her way out of the room. Lisa Tremaine looked as though her disapproval of everything and everybody had reached a point which was inexpressible. "I shall take a bit of a lie-down," she said. "We might ask that doctor for sleeping pills all around. I am sure he has plenty." Now and broader approaches to how the churches can best serve rural families, the country churches themselves are making a definite comeback," Dr. Pielstick said. "An-other factor is a new kind of rural pastor — vigorous young men fully aware of today's farm life problems and dedicated to easing and solving them on an individual and community-wide basis." The Convocation, sponsored by the National Council's Division of Home Mission through its department of town and country church, will take up such problems as rural youth, country-city relations, migrant labor and other low-income farm families, and enriching rural community life. Saville's sermon topic at the 11 a.m. service will be "That They All May Be One." The senior choir will sing 'Break Forth Into Joy,' by Simper, as an offertory. Other events to follow during the week will be a meeting of the St. Agnes Guild Monday night at 7:30 with the program consisting of a book review by Margaret Bradley. Southland Business Shows Moderate Jump LOS ANGELES (UP)—Business activity in Southern California showed moderate advances in September after slight declines the previous three months the Security First National Bank reported today. The bank's monthly summary indicated the business index for the month was about 4 per cent above that of September, 1952, although somewhat below earlier peaks this year. Total employment increased, with large gains in aircraft. Unemployment dropped by 6,000 between mid-August and September. Industrial expansion totaled $247,822,000, while building permits declined slightly. Monthly retail store sales continued to drop but still were higher than last year. Orange Export Program To Be Subsidized WASHINGTON (UP)—The Agriculture Department today announced it will subsidize an export program on oranges and grapefruit again this year. Beginning Oct. 31 the department will pay exporters $1 a box on oranges, compared to the $1.25 subsidy last season. The grapefruit payment will be 75 cents a box, same as last year, and will be effective Nov. 15. The program—being continued for the sixth year on oranges and the fifth for grapefruit—is designed to let exporters sell the fruit to foreign buyers at prices below those paid to domestic producers. Last season the department paid $3,527,460 in subsidies to cover exports of 4,741,000 boxes of oranges and 497,000 boxes of grapefruit. Liquor License Fees Amount to $2,958,717 BUSINESS SERVICE 7.
