Right Half Mickey Gouyd scored all four Colonist touchdowns in as brilliant a display of speed ever to be seen on a high school football field, according to old timers huddled near the press box following the game. Paul Grover, with Don Leigh holding, split the goal posts four times to convert all four touchdowns. It was a perfect display of teamwork on the part of Center Bob Loustau whose centering to Don Leigh was true to the mark, Leigh's clean teeing of the ball, and Grover's excellent toeing as the line held out the Oilers. Fullback Dean Philpott was never able to break away last night. The Oiler defenses were bunched tight down the middle to stop the big boy, whose driving line-smashes have accounted for better than 10 yards per carry and therein lies the story of Anaheim's success on the end sweeps that made Gouyd go. Out-Foxed the Fox It was obvious to those in the press-box that Huntington Beach scouts had passed the word to Oiler Coach Ed Goddard, "Stop Philpott and you stop Anaheim." Coach Van Hoorebeke outfoxed the fox when he instructed Grover to send his two scatbacks wide, catching Oiler defensive backs flat-footed time after time, which the tricky as Anaheim was forced to kick from their 37. The pass from center was low, Philpott's kick was blocked and HB recovered on the Colonist 22. Unable to pick up the first down, the Colonists took over after holding the Oilers to no gain in four tries at the line and on runs by Philpott of 4 yards, Gouyd 10 and a first down to their own 40. Don Leigh swept end for 36 yards to the Oler 22. Philpott got another four. Gouyd three, and Anaheim was detected holding, putting them back to the Oler 29-yard line. Leigh passed twice, once to Gabe Vasques, and once to Gouyd, both incomplete, and the Oilers took over. HB picked up 3 yards in two tries at the line and on third down William pass was intercepted by Verne Weaver on the Oler 44. Leigh Sets Up TD Philpott tried the line and got two yards. On second down, Don Leigh scooted around his own right end, broke into the clear and had to settle for a 35-yard gain as he was caught behind on the Oler 7-yard line. Leigh gained three and Gouyd took it over from four yards out for the first TD of the game, after 9 minutes and 40 seconds of the first quarter. Just as the quarter ended, Oiler Left Hard Ardis Williams fumbled on his own 29-yard line and Art Conneras recovered for Anaheim on the O勒 31. Philpott up the middle for 7 and on second down the Oilers tightened as Anaheim was forced to kick from their 37. Two completed passes, a series of ground plays, and a 20-yard end run by Taillback Bill Harrison into the end zone, put the Oilers on the score board for their TD. Dave Beebe kicked the PAT. Score, Anaheim 21, HB 7. The third quarter ended with no further scoring. Anaheim had the ball on the O勒 35, starting the fourth quarter, first and ten. Leigh made two and on second down, Grover faded back with good protection, and hit Gouyd who was in the clear on the O勒 18-yard line and the little giant went over for his final triumph of the night. Weaver Was Robbed! Just before the game ended Anaheim brought the ball out to their own 20 on an O勒 punt into the end zone. A try at the line lost 5 and on second down Roy Weaver banged through center for 85 yards and a TD but a Colonist was detected in a 15-yard rule infraction and it was called back, setting the Blue and Gold back to their own one yard line. Philpott then got off his kick of the night. Standing near the back of his end zone, he kicked out to the Anaheim 44-line line. Coach Van Hoorebeke outfoxed the fox when he instructed Grover to send his two scatbacks wide, catching Oiler defensive backs flat-footed time after time, which the tricky little quarterback was faking Philpott into the middle. It was a plain case of "Philpott the decoy," and "Gouyd the man of destiny" but no matter who, how, or when, it was a TEAM victory. Spectators at last night's game are convinced, that scouting Anaheim This season is going to put a flock of the league's brain-trusters in straightjacket before the curtain is rung down on 1953 football. The game got off on a sour note Dons Tilt Tough San Bernardino Tonight at 8 P.M. The Santa Ana College Dons have the unenviable task tonight of invading the San Bernardino Orange Show Bowl to meet one of the nation's strongest teams. San Berdoo still ranks over a 14 to 12 upset by Fresno Jaysee last week and the bitter memory of Santa Ana's giant-killing victory last year. That humiliating 34 to 12 upset by the Dons was the only loss in 1952 as the powerful Indians won the conference and downed Vallejo in the Gold Dust Bowl. The setting is much the same this year, with the defending champions favored to fight it out with Fullerton for the title and Santa Ana the underdog because of a record of three losses, one win and one tie. Center, Gene Geselle almost broke up the game in the third quarter when he intercepted a pass and dashed 40 yards until the last man got him on the 25. An intercepted pass stopped the threat. Santa Ana's two co-captains, Ed die Liptrap and Jack Moynihan, will be hard to keep off the all-conference teams on the basis of their sparkling play at guard. Most of the scoring against Santa Ana has been in the air over the line, so effective is the defense. The Don starting line has Gene Geselle at center between Liptrap and Moynihan; Chuck Lyon and Larry Holcomb at tackles, and Jarrett Terrell and Ron Adel at ends. The starting lineup is likely to be Mark at quarter, since Bob Switzer is getting over injuries: Danny Frall and Chuck Neal at But there'll be lots of changing as Ward works in Penny Conradt, Dick Domigos, Elder, Ell Perala, Jim Gill, Gene Frehler and Harley Lobo, if his ankle mends. Prall, Elder and Mark did most of the throwing, when the Dons completed 8 out of 26 passes attempted against Whittier. They have been sharpening up their aim this week. Santa Ana continues to use a T formation and the single wing with an occasional spread. San Bernardino features a split T attack which scored twice against Fresno, defending Central Valley League champions, and also twice the week before when the Indians repulsed Orange Coast, 12 to 7. The Don scoreboard to date is a loss to Fiverside, 13-0; win over Palomar, 7 to 0; loss to Long Beach 14 to 12; loss to Mt. San Antonio, 13 to 7, and scoreless tie with the Whittier Frosh. Fullerton Indians Defeat Newport, 6-0 Fullerton's Indians got away to a first-league-game victory last night, squeaking by Newport, 6-0, in which Halfback Hark Mason sparked his team both offensively and defensively. Mason culminated a 57-yard drive, going over from the six for Fullerton's lone TD. On the final play of the game, Newport's Eloy Martines broke into the clear for a sure touchdown, and Mason overtook him behind on the Fullerton 5-yard line as the gun sounded. Indian first-string Quarterback Darrell Roberts was hurt in the third quarter and was replaced by Freshman Don Box. The young frosh took charge immediately and steered his team to their touchdown. George Halse' Chicago Bears, professional football's most successful grid force during the past 34 years, will be gunning to knock the Los Angeles Rams out of a tie for first place in the Western Conference Sunday when the two clubs collide in Memorial Coliseum. A throng of 45,000 is forecast for the game, which will have a 2 p.m. kickoff. The Midway Monsters have toppled from the throne they had a stranglehold on during the 1940's, but are rapidly rebuilding to that peak. Although out of contention in 1952, the Bears wrecked San Francisco's title hopes with a 20-17 win and then forced Detroit into play-off with the Rams by dumping the Lions, 24-23. Halas will field one of the National Football League's most devastating sets of running backs. A quartet of 200 pounders—John (Kaio) Dottley, Billy Stone, Leon (Muscles) Campbell and Fred Morrison—supply the power while Billy Anderson and Eddie Macon augment this with blinding speed. Anderson, former Compton College star, was the Bears' first draft choice last January. He whipped all of the United States' Olympic high hurdlers in the Compton Invitational of 1951. Macon, former College of the Pacific football and track sensation, was a finalist in America's 400 meter dash Olympic trial finals. In addition to their offensive chores on Sunday, Anderson and Macon will undoubtedly be employed on defense to harness the Rams' passing attack. It is anticipated that Coach Hampton Pool will depend on Los Angeles' aerial game to overcome the burly Bears. Chicago's defensive line.
