Compiled by Jim Duncan
From the Wires of United Press

For instance: In Duarte, Marlin Hughes, 25, reported to sheriff's deputies that someone stole six pairs of panties from her clothesline. She said the panties could be identified by their fancy embroidery. Each pair was marked with a day of the day. Week — Monday through Saturday.

Tips on Touring
By Carol Lane
Women's Travel Authority
American women, as individuals and in club groups, are sparking the nation's crusade for safer streets and highways whether they hall from large cities, small towns or rural areas.
This is the opinion recently voiced by safety experts of the National Safety Council after reviewing the 1983 entries in the Carol Lane Awards for Traffic Safety. Most of the women who have submitted entries this year are housewives and mothers who were spurred on to improve traffic conditions by hazards which endangered the lives of their children and families. Others were inspired by dangers which threatened the welfare of their communities, counties and states.
A housewife and mother in Utah succeeded in reorganizing and improving the police force of her hometown. Her noteworthy contributions to the traffic and pedestrian situation in her town arose out of personal indignation.

A housewife and mother in Utah succeeded in reorganizing and improving the police force of her hometown. Her noteworthy contributions to the traffic and pedestrian situation in her town arose out of personal indignation over disregard for the welfare of her children and those of her neighbors.
In Evanston, Illinois, a woman organized all PTA safety chairmen in a city-wide safety program which proved a major factor in her community's record of no traffic fatalities in 1952. In chalking up this record, she drafted every school child in her community to participate in making Evanston a safer city. One civic-minded North Carolinian helped reduce highway fatalities in her town to only 10 persons, while the rest of the state experienced a four per cent increase in traffic deaths during 1952.

Cafe Cook Held for Molesting Children
SANTA ANA — The charges against him are all wrong, he insists, but George Leonard Reeves, cafe cook, residing at 401 East Fifth St. was nevertheless held for trial when he appeared for preliminary hearing before Municipal Judge Howard Cameron. He is accused of molesting children.
This charge, involving two pupils at Lowell school and one at McKinley school last Sept. 22, as well as an additional charge that he attempted to break jail after his arrest, is untrue. Reeves maintains.
When he tried to block an attack upon a jailer by another prisoner, jail officials thought he was attempting to escape, he said.
After Deputy District Attorney DeWitte Chatterton called the jail incident to the attention of the court, and also cited Reeves' felony record. Judge Cameron refused Reeves' plea that ball be reduced from $5000 to $2000.
Reeves is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior court Oct. 30.

Bishop Oxnam Speech Cancelled
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam, a national leader of the Methodist church, will not be allowed to speak in the Philharmonic auditorium because he is "too controversial." It was disclosed today.
The disclosure was made in a letter of protest sent to the directors of the auditorium by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.
Bishop Oxnam had been invited to be the major speaker at a public meeting of the ACLU at the auditorium in mid-December. It was not known whether he would accept.
ACLU Executive Director Dr. Eason Monroe said auditorium officials denied the ACLU use of the auditorium because Bishop Oxnam was "too controversial."
"Have cultural leaders in Los Angeles really grown so confused that they regard Bishop Oxnam as a 'controversial' figure?" Monroe asked. "Have you become so timid that they shun controversy?"
