Method Where Emergency Calls From Placentia Phone Exchange Area Go Through Placentia Police, Attacked
A problem that has faced Placentia council and Placentia Police department for many years was brought out in the open again Tuesday night, after the scheduled council meeting "adjourned."
Placentia Telephone Exchange takes in practically all of the area north of Orangesthorpe Ave. and east of Placentia, including the city of Placentia. And when a person within this area reports a fire, accident, or other emergency, regardless of where the event happens his call goes to the Placentia police department. Whoever answers the call in Placentia must take what information he can get and relay it on the Forestry Dept. in Yorba Linda or whatever station may be involved. This procedure enacts a dangerous and unnecessary delay, according to Sig Swanson, city clerk, who receives most of these reports, with Miss Darlene Thompson, accounting clerk.
Reads Letter
This opinion was expressed and elaborated on in a letter written Oct. 5 by Swanson and for the first time, read, by himself, in the council hall after the meeting adjourned. Unofficial post-meeting followed, with all who had been in attendance remaining. Swanson had pre-attend the regular session in lieu of City Administrator William Cunningham, at the California League of Cities convention in San Francisco.
He brought the eloquently but strongly worded letter out of his office file in answer to the statement made, after adjournment, by Chief of Police William Wingard. The chief had brought up the subject of the problem involved by the agreed it was not a good method, but since it was in existence, he expected all employees to follow it until or unless something better was worked out through the sheriff's office, with the telephone company.
Swanson, in letter and spontaneous statements attempted to show the near-impossibility of the system. And the police chief continued to remind that it nevertheless existed. "I would like to take this burden off of us also," said Wingard.
Mayor Hopes for Solution
Mayor Wilson pointed out that the same problem had received potent consideration five years ago, ten years, and he hoped eventually some better method would be worked out.
During the meeting of the council, it was voted to allow Barton Chevrolet company of Yorba Linda to construct a billboard in the vacant lot south of the city hall, which will be a used car lot.
A. E. Simmen of Sleepy Hollow, newly hired policeman was introduced. It is his 16th year in police service.
Legion Heard From
There was consideration of the formally stated attitude from Placentia American Legion Hall that they wanted it made known, after recent unfavorable publicity regarding closing of a dance in the hall Oct. 18, that they do not sponsor the dances.
Wingard said the force is so busy on Saturday nights, it cannot assure adequate patrol at the dances, but that the Placentia police are doing the best they can.

Petitioners for More Safety Control at Centralia School Number 198
petition the California Highway Patrol for the following traffic controls in the Centralia school district. We represent the Buena Gardens home owners.
"1. We feel that two cross walks are necessary at Western and Lincoln; one crossing Western and one crossing Lincoln.
2. One cross walk at Harding and Lincoln, crossing Lincoln.
3. One boulevard stop on Lincoln at Western and Lincoln.
4. Fifteen mile zone should be shown in white paint on Lincoln Highway for traffic approaching from east of the school and also for traffic approaching from west of the school."
The united effort on the part of Buena Gardens home owners came on the heels of an announcement by Glen H. Dysinger, Centralia school superintendent, that he had asked the California Highway Patrol for enforcement of the school zone speed laws and greater protection for school children against Lincoln Ave. traffic, but had received only a letter stating that the Highway Patrol would be glad to cooperate, but were "limited by the number of officers available." The reply did state, however, "this office will contact you in the near future and assist you by making recommendations to alleviate the condition."
The petition was carried from house to house by Mesdames Loyal Le Blanc, Al Meeks, William Maguire, and Gene Muldraw. The ladies reported all who were approached were "more than willing" to sign.
