J. S. to Ask Russ for Two POWs of World War II WASHINGTON (UP) — Government officials said today the United States is getting ready to ask the Soviet Union what has happened to Homer H. Cox and Leland Towers, Americans reported to be held in a Russian prison. Austrian World War II prisoners released from Russia reported Wednesday the Americans were being kept in a prison camp about 150 miles northeast of Moscow. This was the first information the government had received indicating Cox of Oklahoma City, and Towers of San Francisco, had been imprisoned by the Soviets. The state and defense departments are now making a thorough check of records on the pair to be sure there can be no mistakes. If the facts show Cox and Towers may be in Red hands, the State Department will ask the Soviet Union to account for them. Officials were unable to say how soon the investigations might be completed. The State Department said Towers, 29, had an American passport but that it expired several years ago. The Austrian prisoners said they believed Towers had been seized near the Soviet-Finnish border. Cox, a 33-year-old Army private, is listed as AWOL from his West Berlin post since Sept. 2, 1949. Russ Arrest 11 MIG Jet Pilots Russ Arrest 11 MIG Jet Pilots BERLIN — The anti-Communist "Information Bureau West" reported today that Soviet secret police have arrested 11 Russian MIG jet fighter pilots and ground personnel to frustrate a mass escape of Soviet airmen to the West. The West Berlin organization, which has some usually reliable informants inside the Soviet Zone of Germany, said the mass escape plot was thwarted early this month at the Russian Retzow airfield, 60 miles north of Berlin. Western Allied military intelligence sources would not discuss the report and it could not be confirmed from other sources. The "Information Bureau" account of the incident said the 11 Soviet pilots were arrested by the Russian MVD just as they were about to take off for West Berlin where they planned to ask for political asylum. The Bureau's report said that "a great number of ground personnel" stationed at the field also were arrested for allegedly conspiring with the pilots. According to "Information Bureau West" Restzow airfield has been "a hotbed" of dissension since January when 17 Soviet officers and engineers were arrested on sabotage charges after five Soviet jets crashed on take-off in a two days period.
