Syngman Rhee Purges Political Foes SEOUL, Korea (UP) — Reports of a wide-scale political purge swept through government offices today as President Synman Rhee met with 12 key South Korean political officers. A South Korean source said the meeting was held at the presidential mansion to "establish firm and unquestioned leadership of the government by President Rhee." It was believed the confidential meeting resulted from a political feud between Rhee and his one-time logical successor, former Premier Lee Bum Suk, who is scheduled to return soon from a trip abroad. Shortly after Lee left for the United States, the government ordered disbandment of the former Premier's powerful National Youth Corps. Rhee charged recently they had promoted factionalism. On Aug. 31, Chung Kui Un, editor of the Yon Hap Shimmun, an alleged associate of Lee, was arrested. Two weeks ago, the publisher of the newspaper, National Assemblyman Yang Woo Junt, also arrested. North Korean Pilot To Study in States WASHINGTON — The young North Korean pilot who flew a Russian Migjet fighter into United Nations territory last month will use part of his $100,000 reward to attend an American college, it was learned today. An Air Force official said the pilot, 22-year-old Noh Keun Suk, has expressed a desire to study engineering in the United States. The school he will attend has not yet been selected. Instead of paying the $100,000 reward to Noh in cash, the Air Force will set up a trust fund to finance his education, the official said. He emphasized that Noh will be able to draw the entire sum out of the trust fund at any time, if he desires, or he can wait until he graduates from college and collect the remaining balance in cash. Noh, a senior lieutenant in the North Korean Air Force, flew the Mig into an air field near Seoul in September. He told reporters there he was not very well educated and would like to go to school in the United States. In this way, he said, he could be of greater value to Korea in the future.
