Colonists Romp to Hard-Earned Win Over El Rancho, 32-12; Ready for Vegas
Anaheim made it two out of three games last night in a hard fought battle, defeating El Rancho, 32-18, on the losers home field. Although the game was fraught with penalties, play was clean and nerves were taut.
Anaheim drew #1x 15-yarders and two fives—El Rancho was charged with four fives and two 18 yarders, for a game total of 14, with three others refused.
Anaheim won the toss and elected to receive. Jim Lindblad kicked off to the Anaheim 20. Dean Philpot took the kick and eluded three tacklers before being stopped on the El Rancho 38.
On the second play of the series, Paul Grover attempted a pass and it was intercepted by a Don on their 40.
El Rancho then marched the 60 yards with Lindblad going over from two yards out on a quarterback keep, and six points. Wooten's conversion attempt was wide.
Mickey Gouyd returned the kickoff 15 yards to his 28, and the Colonists then made two first downs in a row only to be stopped when Glover's second down pass was intercepted on their 35 and returned to the Anaheim 48.
Three plays later, Philpot retaliated and picked off a Lindblad pass and possession on our 40.
Three consecutive first downs were racked up by the Colonists, with Don Leigh, Gouyd and Philpot eating up equal yardage on the ground to put the ball on the El Rancho 10 yard line. The key play in the drive was good for 20 yards on a pass from Grover to Jack Crosson who lateraled to Roy Weaver.
eight-yard loss. The pass situation found the Anaheim defensive back in excellent deployment and Gouyd picked it off on the El Rancho 30 and scampered 21 yards to their nine. Philpott crashed through without a hand being laid on him for 6 more points. Grover's kick was agam off to the left-score Anaheim 19, El Rancho 6.
Four minutes later the half ended, Anaheim's ball, in mid-field. To start the second half, Grover kicked into the end zone and El Rancho started play on their 20. Two line plays made nine yards then the Dons drew a 5-yard penalty. On the next play, Lindblad's daring could have resulted in another Anaheim tally had Roy Weaver been able to pick up the ball. The Don quarterback attempted a lateral to Gary Lundquist and threw the ball over his head. Weaver went after the loose ball, stooped over to pick it up and kicked it toward the Don goal line, caught up with it, grabbed at it twice and finally kicked it out of bounds on the El Rancho two yard line.
It was still their ball and on the next play Lindblad got off a beautiful 47 yard punt to Roy Weaver who returned 14 yards.
Anaheim fumbled, the Dons recovering on their 43 from where they began a march of 57 yards for their second TD, failing to convert. Score-Anaheim 19, El Rancho 12.
Rothaermal's kickoff went out of bounds and it was Anaheim's ball on the Colonist 40. On first down, Philpott reversed his field twice in what was one of the outstanding pieces of broken-field work of the night and got 20 yards for the effort.
At this point Don Leigh began passes in the closing mid-ward off any further scoring and the game ended with no possession on El Rancho yard line.
All Colonists came through out injury and "barring" during the coming weeks sessions, the team should strong if not stronger when out for the land of the silver score by quarters:
Anaheim 0 19
El Rancho 6 0
Scoring — Anaheim, TD: Philpott (2), Leigh, Roy PAT—Grover (2).
El Rancho, Wooten (2).
The team will be one of the first to tie at 64 early in the second quarter. Grovers kick was off to the left, no good.
Gouyd took Grover's handoff and exploded for 10 yards to tie the score at 64 early in the second quarter. Grovers kick was off to the left, no good.
Then followed three punt exchanges with the Colonists in possession on El Ranchos 47 yard line. Three plays later Anaheim had their second touchdown with Philpot eating up 43 yards in two carries the last for 24 yards on a hard drive through a big hole. Grover's kick was good. Score: Anaheim 13, El Rancho 6.
Grover's ensuing kickoff was returned 18 yards by Rothoermal to the Don 29. A rushing play lost two and Lindblad then faded to pass. The whole center of the Colonist line broke through and downed the Don quarterback for an injury.
It went out of my mind before, but it's come to me now that while I was doing up Mr. Opdyke's cabin, last night, the door opened, and a lady—as a matter of fact, sir, it was Mrs. Redding there—looked very surprised to see me, sir, and said she was after Mr. Opdyke to get some brandy for her husband, who was feeling queasy. I told her I would call Mr. Opdyke, but she said no, she would find him herself. I went along then to Mr. Redding's cabin, to see if I could be of service, but he wasn't there. And it was then I saw the lady go into the doctor's cabin, but I gave it no mind, sin, knowing she was after some remedy or other.
Mr. Redding's a gentleman that fringe things about rather, if you know what I mean, as I stayed on and tailed up, and waited for him, but he did not show up. As I was going to come out, I boarded the doctor's door open, so I stopped, not wishing to be in the way.
Carolina smiled one-aloudly: "Why don't you say you stopped to listen, and be done with it?"
Todd went on addressing himself.
Cruise with Death
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
DINNER was a ghastly silent meal. I could hardly bring myself to look at Robert. Liss and Brown had dressed like puksa sashis, but no one else had bothered. The captain sat in his usual place, with his usual absence of conversation, and the emptiness of Opdyke's chair was oppressive. The menu consisted of an indeterminate mingling of meat and potatoes. Caroltta picked at it with her fork.
"What is this meat?"
"Same as the crew gets," Jonas answered.
"I'm madible."
"Fancy victims are oct. Food has to last."
"What about fuel?" asked Brown.
The captain grinned at him. "Twenty of that master."
Arron the table from me, Gay Walton gapped, I closed my eyes waiting for the screams, but none came. She had got herself up in a confession of sea-green organic which emphasized her shell-like skin. With her silver-blonde hair tied back in a scarce tail, she looked more than ever like an angel slightly astray. Apparently she knew when to subdue her.
Anaheim fumbled, the Dons recovering on their 43 from where they began a march of 57 yards for their second TD, failing to convert Score-Anaheim 19, El Rancho 12.
Rothaermal's kickoff went out of bounds and it was Anaheim's ball on the Colonist 40. On first down, Philpot reversed his field twice in what was one of the outstanding pieces of broken-field work of the night and got 20 yards for the effort.
At this point, Don Leigh began a series of sparkling runs that ate up 38 yards to the four from where Leigh took it over. Grover's kick was again to the left-score Anaheim 25, El Rancho 12, and the third quarter ended 6 plays later. Don't ball on their 40.
El Rancho made three first downs in a row to the Colonist 38 and Anaheim held. Lindblad's kick went into the end zone and Anaheim took their 20.
Four first downs put the ball on El Rancho 12 yard line and on the first play. Roy Weaver went into the promised land for six more—Grover split the uprights and the final score stood Anaheim 32, El Rancho 12, with less than five minutes of play remaining.
Roy Weaver intercepted two Don

Total brought collar out on deck. When he sat armed, he was on the roam, taking with things on his shoulder and glancing occasionally at the captain as he sniffed on his mind. He looked at the cut off on his cap and paused to chase a trail announcement that the meal had been.
"Big garden," said Todd. "I could have a word with you."
Some sound back and look at him. "What about?"
"I'll take to talk to you private."
The captain smiled the comely smile. "If we ask about night, we'll just for all to hear Go to the point."
Todd around him no longer stood, as he met Nathaniel again, who came out on his broom but as a man there was a time to be silent.

Todd went on addressing himself to the captain.
"I could not help overhearing Mr. Rodding said, I tell you he got to be close enough, and the doctor..."
Todd paused as a frightened Nathaniel system went up in a good inflation of interest amountment. "So by all means What do I say?"
Todd continued in a rush. "The baby girl and the baby boy." My voice wafted as well as to hide or conceal that so I went away to Mr. Ogden John and told him what I said.
"You're something of a Trout," Carlotta said. "Trout can accompany you to tell them you need me to pay you to buy quinch from this little place." "I'm not sure what I will do with the group and the people in general." "You."

From my knowledge of Mr. Opry's instructions, I should not attempt to sail without authorization. "But since Mr. Brown is making suggestions, I shall make some suggestions too. I suggest that the person with the clearest opportunity to take Darwin revolver was Mr. Brown himself. Mr. Brown was on his own admiration yet faced with an host, and who was growing around the deck Mr. Brown, who has had a long acquaintance with violence and blood, so that they have become conniving to him. Mr. Brown, who is an observant eye that has a clear attention of protecting one of his fellow passengers, is reason still unclear."
Brown sat down again, smiling at great hand clapping and unclenching his mouth on the table. Sandwich watched him mockingly, pleased at having diverted attention so completely from Carrion and himself, and from the hard in deep.
Perhaps now you will explain Brown how you came to throw something overboard just after the lights went on. It was dark in rocky outcrop so that I could not see him.
"I saw him too," I said before I sat time to think what I was saying.

UCLA Continues Winning Ways
LOS ANGELES (UP) — UCLA held its second straight victory over Wisconsin today in consecutive years by stopping Alan (The Horse) Ameche, which was largely responsible for a 13 to 0 win.

A Wisconsin interception by Jerry Witt which he fumbled into the arms of UCLA tackle Chuck Doud set up the first score. With 24 yards to go, Cameron carried the ball three out of five times, bullying his way over from the three in the opening period.
In the third period, Paul Cameron raced 2 yards on a 49-yard drive, then alternated on six plays with fullback Bob Davenport who plunged the final two yards.
It was UCLA's fourth straight win and its second over a Midwest opponent this season. The Bruins beat Kansas as well as two Oregon teams, scoring 85 points to seven for their opponents.

Menendez Appointed Head Boxing Coach At San Jose State
SAN JOSE, Oct. 19 — Popular Julie Menendez has been named head boxing coach at San Jose State, succeeding Dee Portal, famed Spartan ring mentor who was killed in a ranch accident Sept. 28. The appointment, which is effective Oct. 12, was announced by S. G. (Thy) Hartrant, director of the Spartan physical educating program.
A protege of Portal's Menendez has been serving as athletic director of Tulare High School. He graduated magna cum laude from San Jose State in 1950 and the next year was boxing coach at Santa Clara University. He holds a Master's degree from Stanford.
A native of East St. Louis, III., Menendez once defeated Chuck Davey for the national Golden Gloves title and in a brief pro career won 17 and lost only one before bowing out because of bad hands.
The 31-year-old Menendez was the sentimental, as well as logical choice to succeed Portal, Menendez served in the Navy and met Portal when they both were at Georgia Pre-Flight. Since then, his life and career has been closely linked with the late Spartan mentor.
Willie Shoemaker Needs But 12 Winners to Set National Riding Mark
ALBANY, Calif. (UP) — Weille Shoemaker needed a paltry 12 winners today to set a new national riding mark with two and one-ball months of racing left.
Actually, Shoemaker will only give passing notice to the 890 mark established last year by Tony Desprini. He has his eyes on being the first jockey in history to win 400 in one season. And nobody's betting against him.
Willie upped his season's total to a $719 yesterday when he brought home four winners at Golden Gate Fields to send the Lions-49'ers Go TV-ed Sunday
The Detroit Lions, and the San Francisco 49'ers, the two undefeated, untied, teams of the Western Conference of the National Football League will be seen in action tomorrow by viewers of Station KHJ-TV (Channel 9), under the 1953 pro football television program.
When these two teams meet last year San Francisco won the first contest 17-3, and two weeks later ran up 28 points while holding Detroit scoreless. Detroit, however, won 10 out of the 12 games it played during the season and wound up as World Champions, while the 49'ers only won seven of their 12 games.
So far this season Detroit has rolled up a total of 63 points against 38 for its opponents in two games, while San Francisco has chalked up only 62 against its opponents' 51 points in twogames. Considerable action is anticipated when the two teams clash at Briggs Stadium, Detroit, on Sunday next, Jim Britt will be the announcer for the Sunday game which will be telecast for local viewers over Station KHJ-TV on Channel 9, starting at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Bucky Harris Plans No Shift to Orioles
WASHINGTON (UP) — Clark Griffith said today he would not stand in Bucky Harris' way if he planned to become general manager of the Baltimore Orioles but he indicated that Harris intended to continue as manager of the Washington Senators at least through the 1964 season.
"It's all news to me," the 33-year-old Griffith said when asked if his popular manager was thinking of shifting to Baltimore. "I don't contemplate him moving out."
But I wouldn't stand in his way if he wants to do something." Griffith added. "T'll be guided entirely by Harris' wishes."
