"It's just possible that some of the Ram supporters are looking for an excuse for losing a few ball games," Sanders said. Sanders' chief target was former Ram quarterback Waterfield, who threatened to withdraw from the UCLA alumni association because of scouting activities by present Bruin coaches. "Those complaining about UCLA coaches scouting the Rams have no valid argument and are merely exploiting UCLA's high reputation for their own ends," Sanders said. "UCLA is so far bigger than Waterfield and the Rams that it would be ridiculous to dignify their statements by any further answers," Sandera added. WILSON WASHINGTON (UP) — Politicians who can see around corners while keeping both ears to the ground are pondering the angles of recent events, notably the selection of California's Gov. Earl Warren to be Chief Justice. They waste no time now thinking of Warren. He could be summoned from the high bench to the political wars as was Charles Evans Hughes in 1916 to accept a Republican presidential nomination. But there is no measureable chance that he will be. Warren's in the deep freeze to stay. The politicians are thinking of three comparatively young men who, whether they ever actually reach it, might be said today to be headed in the general direction of the White House. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York, is senior of the trio at 51 years. The others are both Californians: Senate Republican leader William F. Knowland, 45, and Vice President Richard M. Nixon, 40. Dewey, Knowland and Nixon figure in political speculation for 1960. Any of the three could be had. There is no single action by Gov. Dewey since he was licked in 1948 nor any combination of actions which adds up to evidence that he has forgotten about the Presidency. Warren's elevation to the bench will leave California minus a Republican favorite son. He has been it without contest and almost a Democratic favorite son, to boot. But immigration officer Rory Chamberlian said he believes Iowa pardon "will not wipe out grounds for deportation." Lindquist's best hope now with Gov. Lee B. Knowland vs. Nixon Therefore, one of the fancier political contests in the next few years likely will come between Knowland and Nixon for the home state Republican top spot. California is second only to New York and equal to Pennsylvania now in electoral votes. The state's favorite son for some time now has been assured of a position near the pole in national politics. Mr. Eisenhower is giving his vice president a great build-up. Nixon will be 47 in 1960. The late Sen. Robert A. Taft gave Knowland a tremendous boost when he picked him for the Republican leadership. He'll be 52. Dewey has been up there for years. One of these three men is a good bet to hit the political jackpot. U.S. to Launch Program To Help Japan Rearm WASHINGTON (UP) — The United States is getting set to launch a multi-million dollar aid program to help Japan build up its defenses, informed sources said today. Modern weapons would be provided in place of the machine guns, pistols and other light arms now used by the "police-type" force. A ministry spokesman said the seven would be charged with assault, murder, robbery and discharge of firearms in the shotgun death of Dr. Ralph B. Swain, an insect expert from Benton, Ill., working under the Point Flur Program in Central America. Swain was killed last Saturday when he and his wife and two sons were stopped by bandits on the Pan American highway 130 miles southwest of here. One of the robbers shot Swain in the chest with a shotgun after he tried to explain he was carrying only travelers checks and could not give them the $230 cash they demanded. Ministry sources said three of the Indians "probably were hiding nearby when the other four stood on the highway at a lonely mountain spot and flagged down Swain's car.
