Seventh Annual Pegleg Trek Slated Saturday to Area of Lost Gold Mine By FRAN STERLING Hey you burro-bone brained, provaricatin', gold justin' sonsa Orange County! How come you ain't at Borrego Springs, on the California Colorado Desert, gettin' ready for the seventh annual Pegleg Trek and Liar Contest? The safari, Saturday through Monday, heralded with the truth-carelessness contest, is a monument to the memory of the most famous mine finder and loser of southwest fact and legend. Ray Hetherington of the Rock and Book Store at Knotts' Berry Farm is one person who will be there for dang shore. He happens to be president and founder of The Pegleg Trek Association. "About eight years ago," he said, "I got the idea and told a few of my friends. We didn't expect more than a dozen—real prospectors to show up. But more than 300 appeared, men, women and children. The second year we inaugurated the liar contest, and now the people of Borrego Springs have built us an amphitheatre." The activities are free and open to the public. It seems there were two Pegleg Smiths of California prospecting history-making. But the one celebrated by the association is the earlier and more unfortunate table of both. Born in the Blue Ridge country, Tom Smith ran away from home when a school boy. It was in 1829, when he was about 30, he sat atop one of three black buttes out of Yuma, beyond the conjunction of the Gila to the Colorado River, deep in walnut-size black-covered 80-percent gold muggets. He broke one open and thought it was copper. He carried a few of the things to Los Angeles, but apparently it was not till during the gold rush of 49 he discovered what had actually been under his posterior. At that time he attempted once by himself to trace from Yuma the Maurice Le Duke, had been looking for water and unwittingly found gold. Pegleg organized a search party of white men and Indians. But while the group camped near what is known as Warner's Ranch, the Indians, in or and the white men mixed in such a way the expedition broke up. Pegleg finally gave up the effort, dying in San Francisco in 1866. Anyway, prospecting had been the least of Thomas "Pegleg" Smith's notorious career. He was a trader, trapper, hunter, free-booter, had ridden with Kit Karson and had perhaps been most effective of all when he turned his spirit loose at the saloon. Although there exists indisputable evidence of the authenticity of the lost gold story, Pegleg would have offered considerable competition in the contest at Borrego Springs this Saturday, where he still voicing the account of his inimitable living. He acquired the stump leg, it is said, as a result of an Indian fight. He had gone back to bury the body of a companion, when the Indians caught up with him. He amputated his injured leg himself, carving his namesake from a piece of wood, which was easily detachable and in the following years served as an ever-ready weapon. People from all over the country will suffer peglegits this week end. Beside professional entertainers there will be Hetherington's favorite musicians — the "Kitchenafire."
