ANAHEIM (Cal.) BULLETIN Thursday, October 1, 1953 SPORTS HAL THOMAS, EDITOR Former Players Honor Bill Cook At Banquet in SAIC Student Union SANTA ANA—Bill Cook, whose Santa Ana College football teams brought national fame to Orange County from 1927 until his retirement as head coach this year, will be honored by his former players and sport fans next Monday night at the Santa Ana Second Guessers Club meeting in the college Student Union at 7 p.m. "Bill Cook Night" is expected to attract several hundred men, including scores of his former players, many of whom went on to attenddom in the bigger schools. Fellow coaches by the dozen will be invited and Sheriff Jim Musick, club quarterback, will be in charge. After prepping at Anaheim, Cook starred at the University of Southern California, then took his first coaching job at Santa Ana College. While out of active coaching now, he remains as head of the physical education department and is the official Eastern Junior College conference representative in a coaches policy group. Santa Ana won 11 Eastern conference championships during Cook's reign, in 1933, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1945, 1948, 1949, and 1950. His undefeated 1940 and 1942 teams were ranked national champions and the 1949 squad was the western representative in the Little Rose Bowl at Pasadena. It was Cook who introduced night football to Southern California junior colleges in 1933. His teams always followed open football patterns and he variously used the single wing, the T, the spread, and even some rugby formations. From 1927 through 1952, Cook's Dons won 162 games, lost 70 and tied 24. They aggregated 4126 points as against the opposition's 2226. This performance was exceptional because Santa Ana through the years has been almost the smallest school in jaycee ranks. When Cook first joined the Dons, jaycee football was secondary to the high schools but he began turning out fast, colorful, highscoring teams which pleased the fans. Cook always was modest and mildspoken but he could mix it with his players to demonstrate a play. When he voluntarily resigned his coaching chores last April, he recommended that Line Coach John Ward succeed him and the appointment was made. An indication of Cook's wealth of talent through the years is shown by his all-time team, as follows: Ends—Bob Schildmeyer '40 and Paul Cleary '42. Tackles—Paul Sedar '40 and Herald Hylton '29. Guards—Dale Mickelwait and George Roussos '46. Center—Lester (Bus) McKnight '40. Backs — Blanchard Beatty Bill Gulley '42, Johnny Fouch Al Carmichael '49. Blockers—John Lenhardt '36. And on his all - time second team are these stars: Ends—Fred Erdhaus '35 and Johnny Joseph '38. Tackles—Rusty Roquet '37 and Murray Adler '50. Guards—Bob Zelinka '49 and win Spector '49. Centers—Keever Jankovich '44. Backs—Ray Willsey '50, J Margucci '41, Chuck Page '42, George Brancato '50. Blocker and kicker—Jack Piering '47. Men coming to the dinner asked to make reservations with Sheriff Musick, Herb Hill, or Dumlap at the college. Ike Got Kick Out of Yogi Berra's Home Run WASHINGTON (UP) — President Eisenhower watched the opening game of the World Series over television yesterday and gave a big kick out of Yankee catcher Yogi Berra's home run. "That fellow really slammed that one out of the park," he told a group of callers. Former President Herbert Hoover also had Word Series few He said after a visit with M Elsenhower that he wished could have attended the opening. MORE SPORTS PAGE 5 Stanton Ranch Ph. Jackie Robinson Can't Shake World Series Jinx NEW YORK (UP)—Jackie Robinson, one of the National League's outstanding stars the last seven seasons, struggled today to shed a four-year-old World Series jinx. Brooklyn's brilliant and aggressive star has been one of the league's most consistent and effective hitters since he broke in back 1947. But in World Series competition he's hit like a blindfolded man. Robinson's series average dwindled to .200 today following an 0-for-4 horsecollar in the Yankees' 9-5 opening game victory over the Dodgers. In series play, Jackie has been to bat exactly 70 times and collected only 14 hits. Moreover, he's knocked in only seven runs in 20 series games. Jackie went to the plate five times yesterday and found a teammate on the base paths four times. In order, he bounced to shortstop Phil Rizzuto, sent a soft liner to second baseman Billy Martin, walked and grounded out meekly to third baseman Gil McDugald. In his fifth and last at bat, he flied to left field for the third out of the eighth inning. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (UP)—Some of the glamor was gone from the California State Amateur Golf Tournament today, but a lot still remained. National amateur champion Gene Littler entered the second round, as expected; defending champion Bob Silvestri won his times yesterday and found a teammate on the base paths four times. In order, he bounced to shortstop Phil Rizzuto, sent a soft liner to second baseman Billy Martin, walked and grounded out meekly to third baseman Gil McDugald. In his fifth and last at bat, he flied to left field for the third out of the eighth inning. But among the missing youthful Ken Ventur, the Walt Cup star, who was dumped in first round by Hugh Sill, a Sun golfer who just whacks the ball around for fun. The winner even par for the distance. He by sinking a six-foot putt on 18th for a par, while Venturi made an eight-footer for a bogey. The other favorite among big field of 360 that originated tried to qualify for the title filmed Dick Yost, the Pacific Northwest champion, advanced with an victory over Styl Stimac of Minez, Calif. There were only 16 left of original field. They play one hole match today then two on day. That will cut the field to men for the 36 hole final rookie on Sunday.
